The Chargers netted the first four points of the game with buckets by Junior Quade Morton and senior Peyton Howald. While the Chargers extended the lead to five sev- eral times in the quarter, the Bears kept attacking to cut in- to the lead. Morton and Howald hit threes in the period, and a bucket and free throws by Ju- niors Chase ridao and Julian Gish respectively, gave the Chargers a lead at the end of the period 13-10. The early second quar- ter saw the Charger lead in- crease to five on a bucket by sophomore Jiles Mason, but it would be a period of unan- swered runs. The Bears ran off six to take the lead, 16 -15 at the 5:49 mark and the Chargers answered with four of their own to go up 19 -16 on a basket by Pey- ton Howald with 4:14 left. The Bears then closed out the peri- od with 10 unanswered points leaving the Chargers trailing 19 -26 at halftime. The third period opened with evansville Central ex- tending their lead to 10 with a quick three-pointer. noth- ing seemed to go right for the Chargers as they turned the ball over several times. When shot opportunities did arise, Pike Central could not get the ball through the net. Charger Coach Hunter el- liott commented, "We got some really good looks. We got opportunities for Jiles, Morton and Gish but we couldn't make the shots." The turnovers by Pike Cen- tral gave Bears the opportu- nity to increase their lead to 15, 39 -24, with just over five minutes left in the period. al- though having the opportuni- ty to get points from the line, as the Chargers got into the bonus early in the second half, they failed to drive inside to make contact and draw fouls. "We were settling for pull-ups when we needed to get down- hill, get to the rim and get to the free throw line," said Coach elliott. The Chargers did take advantage when they got to the line, hitting over 83% for the game from the line. The third quarter closed with evansville Central up 47-36. Trailing by 11, the Chargers got five unanswered points to open the fourth with a trey from Gish and two at the line from Morton, reducing the Bears lead to six. The Patriots picked up a 14-9 first quarter advantage. a low scoring 10 -4 second quarter got the Lady Patriots to a 24-13 halftime edge over the hosts. The three ball made for a comfortable 37-19 lead for the Pocket athletic Con- ference rival, and they pulled away in the fourth. The Lady Patriots held the Lady Chargers to just one of two free throws in the final stanza while adding 11 points to their 24-point second half. Lady Charger junior Brai- ley Mills was four of six from the line and junior guard an- na Whitehead was two of four and two baskets for six points. senior forward Liberty Taylor added a trio of baskets for a six point total while Keena young had one basket in the third quarter. senior guards delaney Welch and Kennedy Willis were each one of two from the line.
