Sports Wednesday, Januar y 11, 2023 The Press-Dispatch B-2 JV Chargers fall to Evansville Central Pike Central Chargers JV basketball took on the evans- ville Central Bears saturday night, and what looked to be a promising start for the Chargers ended in a 50 -44 loss on their home court. evansville Central took the early lead and Pike Cen- tral countered on a basket by drew dawson to tie the game at two. Both teams struggled with turnovers and failed to be very productive from the field. Contributions from albert Whitehead and aron Huchel, in addition to dawson saw the Chargers close out the period up 8 -6. The JV Chargers extend- ed their lead to six at the be- ginning of the second period with baskets by Huchel and Zack Miller. That led the Bears coach to call a time- out less than a minute into the period. a fter the timeout, both teams stepped it up on de- fense creating tie-ups and turnovers. after cutting the lead to four on two foul shots, the Chargers added a basket by Huchel to go up six again with 3:13 remaining. The Bears came right back, scor- ing five unanswered points. The teams exchanged bas- kets the rest of the period with evansville Central hit- ting a three at the buzzer to go up 21-20 at the half. The third period opened the same as the second closed, with the teams ex- changing baskets. However, some misses by the Chargers let the Bears extend their lead to six at the end of the third, 37-31. although facing an up- hill battle in the last quarter, there was no quit in the Char- gers. The Chargers opened up the period on an 8 -2 run, tying the game 39 -39 with 3:30 left in the contest. The Bears made two three point baskets, extending their lead to six once again, while the Chargers were un- able to convert shots in the same time frame. The Char- gers were able to close the lead to three on a basket and foul shot by dawson with just under a minute left. But time ran out on the Chargers as they lost 50 -44. Lady Chargers fall at Washington By James Capozella Press-Dispatch News news@pressdispatch.net The home standing Wash- ington Lady Hatchets con- trolled all but the third quar- ter for a 61-39 win over the Lady Chargers last Wednes- day. Junior guards Brailey Mills and anna Whitehead rolled up 14 of the team's 16 third quarter markers to pull within 14 for a 45 -31 defi- cit before the Lady Hatch- ets continued their winning ways with a 17-8 point fourth quarter. Mills, Whitehead and del- aney Welch combined for nine points in the first quar- ter of action but Washing- ton's aubrey Frank swished three from beyond the arc and cashed in on three of three from the stripe for most of the hosts' 21 first quarter points. Welch, Whitehead and Keena young contributed second quarter baskets but five Lady Hatchets got to the rim to take them into the locker room up 37-15. Following a solid 16 to seven third quarter, Mills got to the hoop for two bas- kets in the fourth while Kah- le young netted one and Kee- na young two of two from the line. Mills led the team with 14 points including a pair of threes. Whitehead bagged six baskets and one of two from the line for 13 markers. delaney Welch and Keena young each contributed four points and Liberty Taylor and Kahle young had two points. Ten Lady Hatchets got in- to the scoring column with aubrey Frank with 15, Katie reed with 14 and Olivia Gil- ley with 11. Lady Charger coach Trey Wornica said, "I really liked our third quarter versus Washington, as well as the second half playing Forest Park. We can compete and beat good teams. We just have to find ways to do that for four quarters." Taryn Fiscus got the team on the board with two threes and another via Kennedy Willis. Tiffany artega got two more threes to go in the second half and Willis was good for the sixth team score from beyond the arc. Cannon had six points as the Indians lost 20-8 in the fifth grade contest. Winslow Wyatt Knight turns the corner and drives the baseline. Knight scored two points for the Eski- mos as they lost 28-10. Winslow's Elliott Campbell breaks free from a pack and heads to the basket.
