SEVENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO The Petersburg Press Friday and Tuesday, Jan. 9 and 13, 1948 american defense med- als and World War II Victory Medals may be obtained at the meeting of the american Legion at the Hall tomorrow evening at 7:30 o'clock, Com- mander John K. Chappell, of Conrad Post no. 179 of this city, announced yesterday. The room foreman at Kings Mine, south of Princeton, was killed and another man seri- ously injured shortly after noon on Monday. The two men were struck by a fall of slate while on cleanup op- erations in the mine. Benja- min T. Messing, 55, was pro- nounced dead upon arrival at the Gibson County Hospital, of a broken neck and internal injuries. Gaile Kammerer, 27, of somerville, received a dis- located right hip and pelvic in- juries. The men were remov- ing rock in the mine so that the hoisting of coal could be resumed after fire and explo- sions closed the mine nov. 10.
