On June 27, Moy- es was charged with neglect of a dependent resulting bodily injury and numerous counts of neglect of a dependent. Police were unable to find her for sev- eral days after a warrant was issued for her arrest, but she eventually turned herself in to police. Her bail was set at $40,000 cash. • Xavery Weisman won the girls south Knox Invitation- al Cross Country meet with a time of 19:25.30. • Police continue to investi- gate the death of Tim Gregory, 68, of Petersburg. Police found him dead in his apartment at the downtown Terrace apart- ments after family members asked police to check on his welfare. • austin d. Hammock, 26, of Petersburg was charged with attempted murder af- ter police said he stabbed his "ex-boyfriend" repeatedly. Petersburg Police Chief Kyle Mills said it was one of the most brutal crimes against an- other human he had seen. Po- lice did not immediately iden- tify the victim, who survived the attack. • Chelsie Lester of Peters- burg was driving at a high rate of speed according to Winslow Police when she lost control and her van slammed into a house at 500 e. north st., in Winslow, knocking a porch off the house. • Xavery Weisman won the Pike Central Invitational cross country meet, setting a new school record time of 18:44.75. OCTOBER • Kennedy Willis was named football Homecoming Queen for Pike Central. • david Michael Taylor, 36, of 1305 e. Cedar st., Peters- burg was arrested on a charge of vehicle theft, after police found Kyle Kinder's motorcy- cle in a garage of Traylor's. • The Press-Dispatch won three awards in the Hoosier state Press association Bet- ter newspapers contest. an- dy Heuring received a second place award in Best General news Photo as well as a sec- ond and third in the Best spot news Photo category. • Petersburg began work to establish a TIF district for a new housing subdivision with more than 100 lots near Hornady Park. They also be- gan the process to annex the ground. • The Town of Winslow suf- fered numerous water breaks over a week, leaving their wa- ter customers without water for several days. The prob- lems started when they had to shut off their water tower, and the increased pressure from Pike-Gibson's system pump- ing directly into the Winslow' system instead of into their water towers. • Pike Central girls cross country team advanced to the semi-state after finishing third in the regional. It is the seventh time Pike Central as a team has advanced to semi- state. Xavery Weisman set new school record time of 18:35 in the regional competi- tion to place third individually. • Water line breaks in Winslow cancelled classes at Winslow elementary school. • The murder conviction and 55 -year prison sentence of edward Fox was affirmed by the Indiana Court of appeals. Fox was convicted of killing his wife, sharon Fox, after he called police and asked them to do a welfare check on sha- ron. Police found her body at the bottom of the stairs to the basement, when they went to her house to check on her. • Makinleigh nelson-Mc- Gee, 4, of Winslow was killed in a auto accident in dubois County. • Pike Central's Xavery Weisman and anna White- head both placed in the top five at the south Knox Cross Country sectional. Weisman placed second and Whitehead placed fifth. The Charger girls advanced to the Pike Central regional as a team. • Pike Central boys cross country team placed fifth in the sectional to qualify for the regional. • The Charger football team picked up their first foot- ball win of the season, beating Forest Park 26 -14. • Xavery Weisman qual- ified for the Indiana Cross Country state Finals by plac- ing eighth in the Brown Coun- ty semi-state. • Pike Central football team beat Washington 28 -7 in the first round of the sectional. It was their second win in a row. NOVEMBER • aes has announced two of the Petersburg coal-fired generating units would be con- verted to natural gas in 2025. In that update they plan to con- vert units 3 and 4 at Peters- burg to natural gas. The plan calls for 1,010 MW of coal gen- eration to cease in 2025 and for 1,300 MW of solar, wind and battery storage to be add- ed locally. • saturday's Lincoln day dinner included Indiana Gov- ernor eric Holcomb, who said U.S. News and World Report or- ganization named Indiana as the best managed and most ef- ficiently run state in the nation four years ago. • Pike County Commission- ers discussed damages paid by the Indiana department of Transportation (IndOT) to yard and streets through- out the Meadowbrook sub- division during construction the past year at their novem- ber meeting. Josh Byrd, Pike County Highway superinten- dent said the contract issued between IndOT and Pike County, agrees to reimburse Pike County an amount not to exceed $52,503.67 for the restoration of the unofficial detour route to its pre-desig- nation condition in lieu of In- dOT restoring the unofficial detour route. • Pike Co. Community Foundation awarded more than $28K to non-profits. among organizations receiv- ing full or partial funding was the Petersburg elementary school Library, youth First to help support good mental health, Pike County Christian assistance to provide food for those in need, and T Tr Hav- en Over the Hilltop to help pro- vide for the needs of familial foster care. • Petersburg Veteran Lee dee Cox told of his time in Vietnam from 1969 -1970, where he spent much of his time in northwest saigon. ac- cording to Cox, he got used to everything that was happen- ing around him. "I grew up a lot while I was over there," Cox said. • Pike Central High school's Greenpower race team, the super Chargers, were on display for the school and community to observe last Friday after they turned in a third place finish in the Choccolocco Gran Prix. They competed virtually on the big circle in front of Pike Central High school. This year they get credit for two races they intend to do virtually, which made them eligible for the se- ries championship instead of just individual races. • It was a quiet night in Pike County on election night as there were a very limited number of contested races throughout the county. One race being closely watched was the Winslow Town Coun- cil. Winners for that election were Timothy ennis, Kavin Gayhart, and Joni stafford. Winslow also voted to add two additional members to it's town board for the 2026 election. • In a plea agreement en- tered on October 31, dana Moyes agreed to plead guilty to five charges of neglect of a dependent (a Level 6 Felo- ny), and seven charges of ne- glect of a dependent in a sep- arate case, which are also Lev- el 6 felonies. The state agreed to drop the charges of neglect of a dependent resulting in Bodily Injury in one case and seven charges of neglect of a dependent, the abandonment or cruel confinement deprived a dependent in the other case filed against Moyes, in ex- change for her guilty plea on the other 12 charges. Moyes has agreed to serve two and one half years in the depart- ment of Correction, with per- mission to be served at Wa- bash Valley regional Com- munity Corrections Work re- lease Program. • Pike Central's football team landed three players on the first team small school all-PaC team and two on honorable mention. Braden Howald made first team run- ning back, Corey Goeppner first team offensive lineman and Isaac Marchino first team defensive lineman. Peyton Howald and Jagar dent were named honorable mention. • a fter some technical diffi- culties, Pike County Commis- sioners approved ratts 1 solar project delay. In the amended agreement, ratts I solar shift- ed the no-later-than dates for the start of Phase I con- struction and the completion of Phase I construction for- ward by two years each, to ac- count for delays in ratts 1 so- lar construction date. ratts I solar requested that the three $200,000 payments be delayed in hopes that replacing later year payments with early pay- ments will provide the county additional financial flexibility. • Todd Hoffman was con- victed of sexual misconduct with a minor. He was ordered to register as sex offender • new Winslow council members attended the no- vember 14 Winslow Town Council meeting, welcomed by current board members deb Lamb, dee Fiscus and dick Brewster welcomed the newly elected council on board. Timothy ennis, Joni stafford, and Kavin Gayhart will be seated beginning Jan- uary, 2023. • Charger boys beat ne dubois 41-30 in scrimmage and opened with Vincennes. a measure of expectations for this year's season was Coach Hunter elliott's reaction to the scrimmage win. While he was glad they won, he was not happy with the overall perfor- mance. • Pike County resident Cyn- di Wells caught a prize win- ning fish. she credited her fa- ther for teaching her every- thing she knew about fishing and about hunting. • Backpack Buddies for stu- dents was created by elaine Barrett to insure students had plenty to eat. Winslow el- ementary became the pilot for the program in 2014. Barrett, her husband, grandchildren, Pam Thomas, cafeteria staff, Linda Corn-Miller and ed- na Gatwood helped pack the backpacks for the students who had signed up for the Backpack Buddies program. • Pike Central sophomore Xavery Weisman was named first team 3a all state by the Indiana Track and Cross Country Coaches association. Weisman finished 37th in the Indiana Cross Country state Finals on Oct. 29 she was the only sophomore in Indiana to make the 3a first team. DECEMBER Indiana supreme denied ed Fox's petition to transfer the jurisdiction of his appeal of his murder conviction from the Indiana appeals Court to the Indiana supreme Court. Fox was convicted earlier of kill- ing his wife, sharon. • Church alive Pastor Greg davis and his wife, Jodi, trav- eled to a frica for mission trip. They stayed for 12 days in a f- rica, first working with Hope for uganda and then ugan- da for Jesus. They stayed six days in Kampala, the capital of uganda, assisting in several different churches. Then the mission team went to the city of Gulu, where they drove out to Otichie village every day to work at the school. • The first saturday in de- cember was filled with holi- day hustle and bustle in Pike County. an ice-skating area was opened on eighth street. Christmas music was played. Petersburg Mayor rC Klipsch commented on the good turn- out for the events. • For the second game in a row Pike Central came from behind in the closing seconds to win and improve their re- cord to 2-0 as Quade Mor- ton scored 27 and Julian Gish 21 to lead the Chargers to a 70 -66 overtime win over For- est Park. Pike County government bodies received more than $1 million in paving grants from the Indiana department of Transportation last week through Community Cross- ings, a component of the Gov- ernor's next Level roads pro- gram. Locally Pike Coun- ty received $845,260.34, Pe- tersburg $153,969.93 and Winslow $111,214.67 to pave roads in the area. • Pike Central Middle school robotics teams of Cir- cuit Jokers and Oreo Bytes competed at seymour on de- cember 10. Circuit Jokers came in eighth place and Oreo Bytes came in 20th place for their first competition of the year. •The final meeting of 2022 Winslow Town Board left ma- ny issues unresolved. dick Brewster had advertised for a special meeting on Thursday, december 8, to make a deci- sion regarding the appoint- ment of two additional town council members, but the cur- rent council members could not come to an agreement. new 2023 Winslow Town Council members pushed for no decision to be made until they are in office. • Pike County Communi- ty Foundation named rea- gan elisabeth Craig as recip- ient of the 2023 Lilly endow- ment Community scholarship for Pike County. "reagan is a stellar student and extremely active in the community," said Cindy Gaskins, Volunteer di- rector for the Pike County Community Foundation. rea- gan is the daughter of Jon and Cassi Craig of Petersburg. • Pike County Commission- er Mark Flint was elected 2023 Vice President of the Indiana association of County Com- missioners (IaCC) southwest district during their recent an- nual conference. Flint will rep- resent the elected county com- missioners in the southwest district of the state, which in- cludes the following counties: Crawford, daviess, dubois, Gibson, Greene, Knox, Law- rence, Martin, Monroe, Or- ange, Perry, Pike, Posey, spen- cer, sullivan, Vanderburgh and Warrick. Timothy Gray's sentence was upheld for a Level 1 fel- ony charge of child molest- ing and was given the max- imum sentence of 50 years, appealed the sentence. Gray, 56, of Otwell appealed his 50 -year sentence on charge of child molesting claiming the Pike Circuit Court had "abused it discretion in sen- tencing and that his sentence is inappropriate in light of the nature of the offense and his character." The Court of ap- peals of Indiana denied Gray's appeal. • Mason's General store opened for Pike Central Mid- dle and High school students. according to PCMs teacher Mrs. Christine Waddell, the mission for "Mason's Gener- al store" is to provide "free" clothing and other necessi- ties to students by creating a store shopping experience. The new store is convenient- ly located inside the school. The store's name is inspired by Pike Central teacher Mr. Ivan Mason, who was a ded- icated educator for 40 years who loved the students.
