Sports Wednesday, December 28, 2022 The Press-Dispatch B-2 Lady Chargers fall to Wildcats By James Capozella Press-Dispatch Sports sports@pressdispatch.net Seniors Liberty Taylor and Keena Young and junior Shelby Meadows got the Lady Chargers going with a 5 -2 early lead over the Lady Cats this past Tuesday, but a three point play by Emiley Kleiser followed by charity shots by Carlee Rog- ers and a quarter finishing three pointer from Tori Brandt made it a 10 -5 start in the 40 -26 Wildcat win. Six Lady Chargers got on the board including starters Brailey Mills, Anna Whitehead, Delaney Welch, Liberty Tay- lor and Shelby Meadows. Keena Young was in the mix with the first Pike Central basket in the early 5 -2 Lady Charger lead. The Lady Chargers closed from down 38 -19 in the third to 40 -24 with two min- utes left after Mills connected on two from the stripe for the 40 -26 final. The girls held the Lady Wildcats scoreless in the fourth until the Cats' only fourth quarter basket fell with three minutes to go. Brailey Mills was Pike Central's lead- ing scorer with seven markers including three of four from the line. Anna White- head tallied three baskets for six points and Shelby Meadows netted one basket and three of six from the line for a five point total. Delaney Welch had one three pointer, Liberty Taylor was three of six from the line and Keena Young had one field goal. The Jasper Lady Wildcats had some advantage in size and their biggest girl, senior Tori Brandt, knocked down four baskets including two three pointers for a game-high total 12 points. Eight Cats got on the board with Carlee Rogers add- ing eight and Emma Schipp seven. Lady Charger coach Trey Wornica said, "The girls had a good first half, worked hard throughout the game and never gave up. The girls continue to play hard. Played well most of the game but a third quarter run hurt us. We will con- tinue to get better. Hopefully this break we'll get our health back and a little pep in our step." The Lady Chargers host the Heritage Hills Patriots on Tuesday, January 3 be- ginning with junior varsity at 6 p.m. fol- lowed by the varsity game. Heritage Hills sports wins over Perry, Tecumseh, Tell City, Bosse, North Harrison and Reitz with losses to Southridge, South Spen- cer and Forest Park. The Lady Chargers are 2-12 with wins over Mt. Vernon (44-15) and Evansville Bosse (42-20) in the first two weeks of December. The girls fell to South Knox by 10 points on November 11 and their recent contest with Jasper was a 14-point contest. The team finishes out the regu- lar season hosting Heritage Hills on Jan- uary 3, Loogootee January 10, White Riv- er Valley January 12 and North Posey Jan- uary 14. JUNIOR VARSITY The Lady Charger junior varsity squad played two quarters to start the evening at Jasper but after Lady Charger senior Tiffany Artega netted one shot from be- yond the arc, the Lady Wildcats marched ahead with 14 unanswered points. Down 18 -3 going into the second, an Ella Clark three bagger got the Cats to 21-3 before Artega and freshman Gracie Hill picked up the Charger scoring with a basket apiece and a 21-7 count. Senior Kennedy Willis and Patience Haycraft got on the scoreboard with 2:21 remaining but down 15 before Artega nailed a field goal and then a three-point- er with less than two minutes remaining. The girls had a strong final period scoring 11 to 14 on the strength of Ar- tega's 10 -point game. Lady Cat Brooke Kleiser led all scorers with 13 points in- cluding five field goals and three of three from the line. Alyla Elkins and Alivia Un- derwood with six points each.
