SEVENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO The Petersburg Press Friday and Tuesday, Dec. 26 and 30, 1947 Mr. and Mrs. Wm. H. Bullard cele- brated their golden wedding anniver- sary, Tuesday, Dec. 23, at the home of their daughter, Mrs. Agnes Blaize. They were married Dec. 23, 1897 at the home of the bride's parents, the late Transon and Susan (McAtee) Catt, by the Rev. Hobson. The Petersburg Kiwanis Club en- tertained approximately fifty chil- dren with a dinner and program at the Methodist church, Tuesday. Pro- gram chairman for the day was Ki- wanian Joe O'Brien. Every effort was made to fit the gift with the child, it was reported and no effort was spared in trying to make the dinner as complete as possible for all. Marriages: Majorie Dean Wil- liams and Dr. Allan G. Silverton were married Dec. 20, at the Methodist church in Winslow; Arthur Rumble and Eileen Stephens were married Friday evening, at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Roscoe Stephens, by Rev. Grover C. Kreig; Willard C. Kelshaw and Flora Eunice McCormick were married Dec. 20 ; John B. Fowler and Mary Ella Sut- ton were married Dec. 20 ; Jack Gil- bert Graham and Mary Kathryn Wil- lis were married Dec. 20, at the First Methodist parsonage, by Rev. R. G. Skidmore; Louis E. McCormack and Violet L. Pratt were married Dec. 20. Deaths: Herman O. McClellan, 40, passed away at his Dutchtown home, Thursday morning, Dec. 25; Emma Wiggs, 78, of Surgeon, died Wednesday, Dec. 24, in the Wash- ington hospital; Rev. William G. Mor- gan, former pastor of the Otwell Cir- cuit of Methodist churches, died in an Indianapolis hospital; Hugo L. Hartke, 69, who served as postmas- ter in Stendal for more than 27 years, died Thursday night at his home; An- drew J. Kidwell, 62, an Enos Coal Mine mechanic, of Princeton, was killed in an automobile accident on his way to work Christmas morning; Oliver M. Colvin, 83, former Peters- burg funeral director, died at the Gibson County General hospital on Christmas day; Georg Biggs, 59, of Knox County, formerly of the Black- burn community, died Wednesday, Dec. 24; Harriet Smith, 77, of Peters- burg, died Tuesday, after an illness of several weeks, at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Hubert Werr of Indi- anapolis. SIXTY YEARS AGO The Pike County Dispatch Thursday, Dec. 27, 1962 Winslow Teen Center will have a New Year's dance beginning at 9 p.m. New Year's Eve. There will be a 25ยข admission charge. Mr. and Mrs. Ju- nior Norrington, Mr. and Mrs. Rob- ert Smith will chaperone. Area To Have Victory Dinner for Birch Bayh: A district-wide pub- lic "Victory Reception" for Birch E. Bayh, United States Senator-elect, will be held next Saturday, Dec. 29, in the National Guard Armory in Jas- per, it was announced today by Gor- don St. Angelo, Huntingburg, Eighth District Democratic chairman. County Officials Being Sworn In: Monday, Dec. 17, Stanley Nelson, Pike County Clerk, read the oath of office to the recently elected county officials, which were David Thomas, Assessor; Norman Von der Lehr, Re- corder; Allen Smith, Sheriff; William Richardson, Prosecuting Attorney; and Roscoe Sims. Marriages: Donna Rae Nordhorn and Stanley Lee Cook were married on Sunday afternoon, at the Winslow Christian Church, by Rev. L. C. Ziegler; Helen Marie Wessel and Lt. Larry L. Batch were married Mon- day, Dec. 10, at the Evansville East Side Baptist church, by rev. Phillips, 76, of Hazle- ton, died Friday, Dec. 21, at the Da- viess County hospital; FIFTY YEARS AGO The Press-Dispatch Thursday, Dec. 28, 1972 A check for $250 was received from the Amax Coal Company by the South Pike P TA. Richard Wal- lace, principal of Winslow elemen- tary, accepted a check for the P TA from John Willis, Superintendent of Ayrco mine, and Dick Greene, mine clerk. The money is "earmarked" for a special program consisting of tape recordings and listening centers for the language arts program in the Winslow Elementary. One Killed Five Injured in Wreck: One person was killed and five in- jured in a head-on collision on high- way 56 near Cato Friday around 8:05 p.m. Reba Avanelle Kinman, 54, died at the Jasper Memorial hospital about two hours after the accident. She was riding in a 1965 Ford driven by her husband William R. Kinman, 61. Doris J. Kinman, 21, was also in the car. Both Mr. and Mrs. Kinman were thrown from the vehicle at the time of the crash and received extensive injuries. Mr. Kinman remains in the Jasper hospital in serious condition. In the other car, a 1963 Buick driv- en by Ronald E. Clark, 19, of Stendal, Kathy Hines of Petersburg, suffered possible skull fracture, laceration on the right knee, a neck injury and was in a state of shock. Clark was head- ed west in the 1963 Buick, according to police when Kinman, headed east, attempted to turn into his driveway. Clark swerved to his right, the same direction Kinman was turning, but could not make it around him. They his solidly and glanced off each other with the Clark auto running through the yard where it hit a tree. Citations were issued to both drivers. Clark was ticketed for speeding and Kin- man for operating left of center. Births: To Mr. and Mrs. Earl Gray, of Oakland City, a daughter, Amy Jean, by adoption, Dec. 11; To Mr. and Mrs. Gary Bolin, of Somer- ville, a son, Christopher Chad, Sun- day, Dec. 18; To Mr. and Mrs. Ken- neth Hopf, of Otwell, a daughter, Sha- ron Rose, Friday, Dec. 22. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO The Press-Dispatch Thursday, Dec. 25, 1997 Delama McCandless, of the Winslow Volunteer Fire Department, puts together one of 27 Christmas food baskets the department gave out to needy families on Saturday morning. Winslow Fire Chief Jim Gladish said the food baskets were made possible by donations from Bread of Life Ministries, Snyders, the South Patoka Fire Department and The Press Dispatch.
