The Chargers didn't let the Blackhawks two-three zone defense affect them, scoring six unanswered points to start the first quarter. Springs Val- ley fought back to score sev- en unanswered points them- selves. The Chargers took the lead back 20 seconds later on a three pointer by Julian Gish, who led all Charger scor- ers with 30. That basket put the Chargers up nine to sev- en and the Chargers never looked back, closing out the quarter 19 -8. The Chargers' tenacious de- fense and ability to move the ball against the zone had the Blackhawks starting the sec- ond quarter in man-to-man de- fense. That defensive scheme didn't prevent the Chargers from continuing to be aggres- sive. Quick hands by Pike Cen- tral produced numerous turn- overs by Springs Valley lead- ing to some easy baskets by the Chargers. "I thought we played very well, giving great effort on both sides of the ball," Charger Coach Hunter Elliott said. Contributions from Gish, Quade Morton and Jiles Ma- son saw the Chargers close out the first half up 37-19. Pike Central quickly ex- tended their lead at the be- ginning of the third quarter with points from Giles, Bra- den Howald and Peyton How- ald. However, six quick points by the Blackhawks had Coach Elliott calling a time out to make sure everyone was on the same page. They were as the Chargers closed out the period, after that time out, on a 15 -9 run. Morton came alive in the fourth quarter scoring the Chargers' first 13 points of the period. Morton finished the game with 26 points. Even with a large lead the Chargers continued to block out and re- bound strong throughout the quarter, allowing the Black- hawks to score only 12 points in the final period. "We played a great in- side-out game," Elliott said. It showed as Pike Central scored 52 points in the paint compared to only 20 in the paint by Springs Valley. The Chargers' next contest is with Gibson Southern Ti- tans on Thursday, December 29 in Fort Branch at 7:30 EST. CHARGER JV FALLS TO SPRINGS VALLEY It was a tough night for the Pike Central Chargers JV bas- ketball team as they fell to the Blackhawks 34-24. Springs Valley opened the game with a strong zone defense the Chargers could not handle. The Chargers went down 10 - 0. The first period ended with the Chargers down 15 -1, the lone point coming on a free throw by Ryan Whann. Pike Central could not fig- ure out the defense in the second period either as the Blackhawks continued the zone defense. The Chargers could only muster six points in the second quarter as the half ended with Pike Central down 19 -7. Coming out after half, the Chargers played much better defense. They were aggres- sive, working hard to trap the ball and crash the boards. They were also much better in moving the ball against the zone. Although the Chargers outscored their opponents in the third period eight to five, the early deficit was difficult to overcome as they eventual- ly fell to the Blackhawks by 10. JUNIOR VARSITY Chargers (24) Albert Whitehead 1 0 -03 3, Drew Dawson 2 1-3 1 6, Zane Gehlhausen 2 1-2 5 5, Zack Charger guard Quade Morton scores on a breakaway after a steal. Morton had 26 points in the Charger win. Steve Hamilton photo
