Sports Wednesday, December 7, 2022 The Press-Dispatch B-2 OVERTIME Continued from page 1 WILDCATS Continued from page 1 needed. Partenheimer was called for his fourth foul as Morton drove to the basket. Parten- heimer complained to the ref- eree and was hit with a tech- nical foul, his fifth. He was disqualified for the game, opening the middle for the Chargers. The technical also gave Morton four free-throws. He hit all four and the Char- gers got the ball back. Gish, after missing, got one hand on the rebound and threw it down to the give the Chargers their first lead of the game at 50 -49 with 6:22 left. "A six-point play really helps," said Charger Coach Hunter Elliott. Gish immediately stepped in front of a pass on Forest Park's next possession for a steal and took in for the score and a 52-49 lead. But the Rangers went on a run that included two three-pointers by Jake Berg to put Forest Park up 59 -54 with just 2:35 left. Gish scored on a drive and converted and hit a free throw with 1:42 left. Forest Park missed two free throws and Peyton Howald went to the line with 51.9 left. He hit the first of two free-throws and the Chargers trailed 59 -58. Forest Park's #22 was fouled with 29.2 seconds left. He hit the first of two free- throws, but missed the sec- ond. Pike Central got the re- bound and came down the floor. Morton surveyed the de- fense, then beat his man and pulled up to drill a 12-footer, tying the game with 15.6 sec- onds left. Forest Park got the ball in- bounds and made it down floor, but a three-pointer by Jace Berg bounded away and the game went into overtime. Pike Central got the tip to start the overtime and Gish drove and dished to Peyton Howald for 62-60 lead. Morton scored on a drive to make it 64-60. The Rangers and Bergs wouldn't go away. Jace Berg hit a three followed by a Trev- or Berg three to tie the game with 1:36 left. Morton would score the Chargers' next two baskets as he had eight in the overtime. His bucket at 8.4 seconds put it away for the Chargers. JV BEATS RANGERS 47-41 Pike Central's Albert White- head knocked down four three pointers and scored 16 points to lead the junior varsity to a 47-41 win over Forest Park. The Chargers trailed 11-9 after the first quarter in which Drew Dawson scored seven of his nine points. But in the third quarter the Chargers took control of the game as Whitehead and Lane Freder- ick both made two three-point- ers as Pike Central put up 18 points in the quarter to take a 27-18 lead into the half. Frederick added 10 points for the Chargers, which are 1-1. CHARGERS STRUGGLE IN LOSS TO PRINCETON Pike Central suffered their first loss of the season to Princeton on Saturday, 53- 51. The Charges got a shot at the end to win the game, but Chase Ridao's open three didn't go down. The Chargers got off to a slow start again, trailing 14-9 at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter Chase Ridao had eight points in- cluding a three as the Char- gers poured in 19 points and Princeton led 32-28 at the half. In the third quarter, Prince- ton extended their lead to 47- 40 as Quade Morton scored nine of his game-high 21 points. Pike Central rallied in the fourth quarter and tied the game with 1:15 to go and had the ball. The Chargers tried to hold the ball for a last-second shot, but a turnover gave the ball back to Princeton, who went up 53-51 with 15 sec- onds to play. The Chargers came down the floor and got Ridao an open three at the buzzer but it didn't go down. "I thought we played a pret- ty sold game overall. . . We got a good look in the corner for a wide open three, we just didn't make it," said Elliott. He added the Chargers did not shoot well. "They (Prince- ton) hit a few more shots than we did. It just went their way." Pike Central is 2-1 on the season. CHARGER JV WINS AT PRINCETON Pike Central junior varsi- ty picked up their second win of the season with a 27-22 win over Princeton on Saturday. The girls went to the line for sev- en shots in the second and fi- nal quarter but netted just two for a skinny 10 -7 loss to the La- dy Vikings. Lady Charger coach Jen- nifer Smith said it was "A tough loss today. The girls al- most had a complete game. Our free throws hurt us to- day shooting only 23 percent. These girls played had. They are playing with such enthusi- asm and intensity. They began with a 5 -0 start coming from steals and push- ing the ball up the court. We had many fast-break opportu- nities to get some early points. We got some good defensive minutes from Keltie (Dors- ey) and Neisha (Smith). Mad- elyn ( Fiscus), Patience Apol- los) and Gracie (Hill) worked hard on the boards. Gracie, Taryn (Fiscus) and Kenne- dy ( Willis) did well handling the ball, getting into the gaps for some steals and running the ball. These girls are fun to watch. Come out and support the Lady Chargers." Pike Central JV: 5 7 Mt. Vernon JV: 0 10 Lady Charger JV: Willis: 0 0 1-0 0 0, T. Fiscus: 0 0 4-3 2 3, M.
