He could see men huddled inside the plane, se- verely wounded. Franz laid his hands over the pocket of his jacket and felt his rosary beads. He de- cided, 'I will not have this on my conscience for the rest of my life.' He inched close to the right side of the plane and motioned to the copilot with a downward motion of his hand to land. Better to land and sit out the war in a POW camp than cash and die, Franz rea- soned. To his surprise, there was no response. He gently ma- neuvered his plane to the pilot's side. Again, he mo- tioned down. There was no response. He mouthed the word Swe- den. The safety of Sweden was just a half hour away. Sweden was a neutral coun- try. They could sit out the war interred. Again, there was no re- sponse. The B-17 was so damaged that Franz believed it was doomed to crash. He made several more attempts to sig- nal to the crew to land, but they ignored him. 'What a dumb guy,' Franz thought. Finally, nearing the coast, Franz took one last look at Charlie, saluted him, and as he peeled away, he said, 'Good luck, you're in God's hands.' It relieved Charlie when the enemy plane vanished in the distance. The enemy's sa- lute was frozen in his mind. One thing he knew, "whoev- er he was, his enemy was a good man." Every time the plane would shudder and drop a few feet, Charlie would touch the Bi- ble in his pocket and asked his third pilot to stay close. Despite the odds, Charlie landed the plane at Seeth- ing, England. Surveying his beaten-up airplane, Char- lie became frightened. He thought, "It seemed as if a hand had been holding us up in the air, and it wasn't mine." Charlie wondered about the German pilot who had escorted them out of certain death. Who was he and why did he let us go? Charlie secretly hoped that his enemy would sur- vive the war. Franz survived the war. A fter the war, Charlie nev- er quit wondering about the pilot who saved his plane and eight other lives and why. Franz Stigler immigrat- ed to Canada in 1953 and be- came a successful business- man. In 1986, Brown decided he would try to find that ene- my pilot who spared his life. Still being led by his 'third pilot,' he found Franz Stigler living in Canada in 1990. They became close friends and remained so until their deaths. Franz never earned the Knight-Cross, but he be- lieves he received something better. Franz gave Brown a book and inside the front cover Franz wrote, "In 1940, I lost my only brother as a night fighter. On the 20th of December, 4 days before Christmas, I had the chance to save a B-17 from her de- struction, a plane so bad- ly damaged it was a wonder she was still flying. The pilot, Charlie Brown, is for me, as precious as my brother was." "Thanks Charlie. Your brother, Franz." Do you have a 'higher call- ing? ' PAPARAZZI I didn't believe in fairy tales until I walked into the animal shelter and met my soulmate. This week PAWS fea- tures a young, shy gal named Paparazzi. I'm un- sure what kind of life this pretty gal had before com- ing to PAWS, but she is very shy until she gets to know those around her. A f- ter she trusts an individu- al she pours out her affec- tion. She gets along well with other dogs, loves to play and catch frisbees, has short, smooth black fur, with white accents and is a labrador retriever mix. Hoping this precious gal finds her soul mate for the holidays as she has been waiting for that special someone to rescue her. To adopt Paparazzi, call 812- 354-9894. PAWS WEEK PAWS WEEK Pet of the down the hatch. If I keep eat- ing like this I'll have to have a new wardrobe. I enjoy ringing the bells for the Salvation Army kettles and so far I have rang three times and there has been some very generous people come through to help put money in the kettles. I hope to do another shift or two be- fore we put up our bells for the season. I don't care much for the commercialism of Christ- mas but I love this time of year when we celebrate the birth of Jesus. One of the highlights of my Christmas season is the play Cup Creek puts on each year. My family has been involved with their plays in a support role posi- tion for a couple of years now and it is touching and brings some joy to Christmas. My hat is off to them for meaning so much to so many people. On Dec 16 at 6PM EST as many folks who want to sing carols and share their voic- es are invited to join a pitch in carolling group at the Hor- nady Park cabin to sing and have a good time. It is time for our community to reach out to one another. Please if you can join us and sing for our Lord. This would be a great time for you to be bless- ing and I'm sure we will re- cieve many blessings. Bell ringers The Petersburg Boy Scouts rang bells for Salvation Army, recently at the Dollar General in Petersburg. They are (l to r) Graham Wieneke, Chuck Froehle, Gary Lukens and Ayden Young. Any organization or individual wanting to volunteer can call John Burns at 812-789-3536. Ringers are needed every Friday and Saturday at the Petersburg Dollar General Store and Petersburg Hardware.
