Pike Central battled back from as much as 13 points down early in the second quarter, playing without their tallest player 6'6" Ken- dric Sorgius, who broke his hand late in the Vincennes game on a dunk. The Chargers were struggling to stay with Forest Park. The Rangers used a strong in- side game and accurate outside shooting to keep the Chargers at bay. They consistent- ly held a five-point lead throughout much of the first half. Pike Central's Quade Morton hit a three-pointer with 1:52 left in the first quar- ter to pull the Chargers to within 15 -13. It was Morton's tenth point of the quarter. Peyton Howald made both free-throws af- ter being fouled trying to put back his own miss to pull the Chargers to 23-21 at the 5:52 mark of the second quarter. But things started going Forest Park's way. Carter Hinson knocked down a three with 2:10 left in the half to put the Rangers up 33- 23 and the half ended 35 -25. About 90 seconds into the second half, Na- than Berg hit a three and the Rangers' lead was 38 -25. "I think the resiliency we have shown so far is just our confidence in our ability to over- come whatever circumstance we have," said Charger Coach Hunter Elliott. "I wish we would play with a little more urgency out of the gate so we wouldn't have to dig ourselves out of a hole," said Elliott. Charger Julian Gish, who had 21 points on the night converted a one-and-one to make it 41-30 with 5:30 left in the third. Sophomore Giles Mason hit a jumper over the Rang- ers' center, Robert Partenheimer, to cut the lead to 41-34 with 3:50 in the third. On the next possession Gish hit a driving layup that could have cut it to five. Instead he was called for a charge. Gish retaliated by immediate- ly stepping in front of a pass and was fouled on the ensuing drive. He hit one of the two free throws to make it 41-35, but Forest Park quickly bounced the lead back to 10 points when Partenheimer took a nice pass in the paint for an easy basket. Pike Central fought back with increased intensity. Braden Howald beat his man, then hit his brother Peyton who was cutting with a nice pass for a layup. Peyton, in a scramble for a rebound, dove out of bounds and got the ball to Morton who drilled a 10 footer, that cut the lead to 47-42 with less than a minute left in the third. Gish got another steal to make it 49 -44 with 7:35 left.
