Knox By Andy Heuring Press-Dispatch Editor editor@pressdispatch.net Pike Central's sixth grade boys beat Washington Catho- lic 36 -13 on Saturday as Caleb Kessen and Daxyn Yon both scored in double figures. The Chargers jumped out to a 14-2 lead in the first quar- ter as Kessen scored eight points of his game-high 14 points. Yon had 10 points in- cluding the Chargers' lone three-pointer. The Chargers fell 44-10 on Thursday night to the South Knox as the fell behind 14-2 in the first quarter and were never able to make up ground. Road trip to Barr-Reeve cost the Lady Chargers a loss By James Capozella Press-Dispatch Sports sports@pressdispatch.net The road trip to Montgomery last Thursday cost the Lady Chargers a 44- 18 loss at the hands of a balanced Barr- Reeve Lady Viking team. Pike Central girls were held to just one basket from Liberty Taylor in the first quarter and a basket and free throw by Brailey Mills in the second for a 16 -5 defi- cit going into halftime. Anna Whitehead netted a basket and a three bagger and Mills added a field goal and free throw while the Lady Char- ger defense held the Lady Vikings to just six points at 32-13 going into the fourth quarter. Barr-Reeve stiffened their defense and gleaned five baskets including a pair of threes to claim a 44-18 win. The Lady Chargers got to the line for three of eight free throws in the fourth and a basket by Keena Young to finish with 18 markers in the Thursday evening fray. The Lady Chargers had five players in the scoring column including Brailey Mills and Anna Whitehead accounting for six points apiece. Liberty Taylor had the only basket in the first quarter for the Lady Chargers and added a free throw in the fourth. Keena Young had two points with a fourth quarter field goal and Kah- le Young was one of two from the line. Barr Reeve's Willow Thompson net- ted 13 points followed by Hannah Bled- soe with 10 and Beth Graber with eight including two three pointers. Olivia Em- mons contributed six markers with two from beyond the arc. Three pointers ac- counted for nine of 26 first half scoring by the Vikings and totaled nine of 18 sec- ond half markers. The Lady Chargers had just one three pointer fall and were five of 12 from the charity stripe. Mills hit two of four and Kahle Young, Whitehead and Taylor each got one of two coming in the fourth. Coach Jennifer Smith said, "An exciting game was had by the JV team. Again, multiple scorers with Kennedy Willis leading the pack with six. Unfor- tunately, free throws were a struggle to- night, only hitting two of seven. Patience Apollos was more aggressive on offense tonight, getting a bucket and causing some Barr-Reeve fouls." Coach Smith added, "Defense was on point, causing multiple steal opportunities. I loved see- ing the girls be more aggressive with picking the passing lane. Totals: 9 0 4-2 8 20, 7 13-20 Chargers girls win tri-meet; boys third By Andy Heuring Press-Dispatch Sports sports@pressdispatch.net Pike Central girls won a tri- angle swim meet with Boon- ville and Gibson Southern. Pike Central had 10 girls place third or higher in the meet as they scored 112 points to pull out the win over Gibson Southern with 108 and Boon- ville 93. Senior Jillian Bailey had an individual first in the 50 free- style and in 26.95 and placed second in the backstroke in 1:13.65. Bailey also was a member of the winning 200 free re- lay team that included Alex- is Oswalt, Shelby Keeker and Easton Bailey. She also was part of the 200 medley relay with Oswalt, Taylor Oswalt and Keeker in 2:14.28. Jackie Berry had the other individual win for the Char- gers in the 100 free with a time of 1:07.11. Berry also placed third in the 100 backstroke for the Chargers. Alexis Oswalt along with being a part of the winning 200 free relay team and sec- ond place 200 medley relay, placed second in the 100 but- terfly and third in the 200 IM. Taylor Oswalt added a third in the 50 free and third in the 400 free relay with Ruby Sal- lee, Elle Adams and Easton Bailey. Xavery Weisman placed second in the 500 free and third in the 100 breaststroke. Tessa Vinnedge placed third in diving. Boys pace third in trian- gle meet Pike Central's boys placed third, scoring 77 points as Boonville won the meet with 135 points and Gibson South- ern was second with 107 points. Awstyn Luff placed second in the 100 fly for the Char- gers in a time of 1:00.9. He al- so placed third in the 200 in- dividual medley in a time of 1:01.55. Luff also was part of the 200 free relay team including Co- bey McKinney, Ethan Mann and Jacoby Smith that placed second. McKinney added a third place in the 50 free and was part of the third place 400 free relay team of Mann, Ty De- Coursey and Blaine Barnett. Mann had a second in the 100 breaststroke just ahead of Smith who placed third in the event. Markus Hutchinson was third in diving for the Char- gers. Freshmen boys win season opener By Andy Heuring Press-Dispatch Sports sports@pressdispatch.net Pike Central's freshman boys basketball team won their season opener against Southridge 37-28 last Tuesday. Kylon Bottoms led the way for the Chargers with 11 points. the Chargers jumped out to a 14-7 lead in the first quarter and then held South- ridge scoreless in the second quarter to stretch their lead to 19 -7. They made it 27- 11 after three quarters. Southridge scored 17 points, hitting five threes in the fourth reduce the Char- ger lead to nine points. "It was a great win to start the year for us," said Coach Damon Schnarr. He added, "It was a total team effort as we had eight different players score. Our defensive pressure was also a key to the win.
