A-8 Tuesday, September 27, 2022 South Gibson Star-Times Fighting cancer with corn By Janice Barniak Star-Times Editor editor@sgstartimes.com The Bee-lievers corn maze next to CVS in Princeton opens this weekend, and with five weekends in October in- stead of four. The Douglas and Boxell families hope to add even more to the roughly $50,000 they've raised for the Ameri- can Cancer Society over the last twelve years. Brian Douglas adds that over that 12 years they'd have raised even more to fight cancer except one year a windstorm flattened the corn field, and during the pan- demic when people weren't gathering he turned the corn field to soybeans, sold them, and donated the profits. Saturday he was cutting the maze in by hand and selling $5 bundles of corn stalks for decor. Some years he uses a trac- tor and a drone but cutting by hand gives a little neater re- sult, he said. "It just takes a lot of time. I don't use a map. I use my own mind, and I tr y to trick people into going in the wrong way," he said. He added some people seem to immediately find their way out while others go out the way they came in, never finding the exit. "It sits on 3 acres but when you're out there it feels like more." The maze is donation-only, and is hosted by the Bee-liev- ers Relay for Life team's roughly six volunteers who will be hosting beginning at Saturdays and Sundays ever y weekend in October from approximately 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. (ending earlier if it slows down.) They also have an eight minute hay ride. The last weekend they do a haunted maze, beginning around 7 p.m. Douglas said the cause is personal to the volunteers; he, for example, lost his mother to cancer, and his wife has sur vived cancer and other team members have lost grandmothers, uncles, aunts, and several family members. "We do it for all of those in honor of them and in memor y of them...Sometimes people don't even want to go through the maze. They just want to give to the cause." When the maze is over, Douglas will har vest the corn and the sale of that will also go to fight cancer. OCU receives $750K Oakland City University has received $750,000 from Lilly Endowment, Inc. to establish and run several technolo- gy-based summer camps for high school students in the southwest Indiana region. OCU President Dr. Ron Dempsey stated, "Lilly En- dowment's Indiana Youth Pro- grams on Campus initiative sought to energize interest in higher education among young people in our region by encouraging us to promote student learning on the univer- sity's campus." Dempsey add- ed, "Research conducted by OCU at school corporations in our region revealed the lack of student understanding of tech- nology, computer science, and coding, which are vital to the southwest Indiana region's current and future labor mar- kets." Lilly Endowment's grant will enable OCU to offer three summer camps: 1) A begin- ning coding camp, 2) an ad- vanced Game Design camp, and 3) a two-week intensive college-level computer science course for which students can receive college credit. The be- ginners camp will start in the summer of 2023, with the fol- lowing two camps beginning in 2024 and 2025, respectively. The grant funds will assist with technology infrastruc- ture, camp instructors, camp activity personnel, licensing agreements, and recruitment materials. Brooksie Smith, Oakland City University's Director for Calling and Career Center, added, "We are enormously grateful to Lilly Endowment for supporting our vision of connecting innovation, collab- orative team-oriented experi- ences, and human-centered design to students on our campus. Ultimately, these learning experiences will cul- minate and prepare students as they bridge education and industr y." Brian Douglas clears corn stalks from the corn maze the Bee-lievers Relay for Life Team run by the CVS, in Princeton. Brian Douglas bundles corn stalks for decor as he clears out the annual Bee-lievers Corn Maze opening this weekend. He sells the corn for $5 a bundle, which is also donated to the American Cancer Society.
