The boys team, which has only one senior rolled to vic- tor y taking the top five places in the meet to win with only 15 points, the lowest score possible. Junior Titan football sweeps Southridge The South Gibson Jr. Ti- tans traveled to Southridge on Tuesday night and came away with two wins. In the seventh grade con- test the Jr. Titans won 40-6. The Titans got on the score- board early and often. It started with Isaac Dill running for a 23-yard touch- down. Dill then hit Luke Mal- lor y on the PAT. Dill blocked a punt and R.J. Smith recovered it in the end zone for a touchdown. Dill found Ayden Bodrie on the PAT. Dill ran in from 56 yards and once again found Mallor y for the PAT. Dill and Mallor y hooked up on a 21-yard scoring play and Tucker Deputy ran in for the PAT. Deputy would also get in the end zone with a 22-yard run. Bodrie ran for the PAT. On defense, Deputy had six tackles, Jaxson Kiefer had five tackles, and Gabe Foster had four tackles. Elijah Maynard had an interception and Dill a blocked punt. The seventh grade im- proves to 5-0 and takes on Me- morial Saturday morning. Eighth grade wins 18-6 The eighth graders won 18-6. Caden Rochleau found Collin Higginbotham on a 56- yard scoring play for the early lead. The lead would hold into the second half when Dea- con Dressler popped up the middle and ran for a 62-yard score. A little more than a min- ute later Southridge would an- swer and make the score 12-6. With 16 seconds remaining, Collin Higginbotham stopped a Southridge drive with his second interception and ran it back for a touchdown to seal the victor y. The 8th grade improves to 4-1. Both Junior Titan teams will host Princeton next Thurs- day. "We were happy with the win, but the seventh grade will need to step it up on Saturday. The eighth grade will need to have a good week of practice to get ready for Princeton," said Coach Chris May. Titan tennis wins 5-0 over Boonville By Andy Heuring Star-Times Sports sports@sgstartimes.com Gibson Southern's boys tennis beat Boonville 5-0 on Tuesday as they lost only sev- en of 67 games. Jake Decker at number one singles beat Boon- ville's Zane MonHgomer y 6-0, 6-1. T itan Landon Kiesel at number two sin- gles beat Joe Moesner 6-1, 6-0 and Eliott Church at number three singles put up a 6-0, 6-0 shutout against Boonville's Wyatt Harpenau. In doubles the Titans' Kie- sel brothers, John and Noah rolled to a 6-0, 6-2 win, while Wyatt Kruse and Ezra Pohl won 6-0, 6-3. When Katelyn Walker's putt rolled in for a four on her 18th hole she didn't realize she had just secured the lady Titans' trip to Indy. She and Jasper's fifth play- er, Molly Kissel, were play- ing stroke-for-stroke through much of the round. They both shot 50 on the front nine. On the back nine they both had sixes on 10 and five on 11. It wasn't until holes 14 and 15 Walker pulled ahead with a par on the par three 14th when Kissel made four. Then on the par five 15th hole Walker bird- ied with a four. Kissel made bogey giving Walker a three- shot lead with three holes to play. Things got close when Kis- sel made up two shots on the 16th as Walker tripled and Kissel made bogey. The two would match each other on the last two holes, but when Walker's putt on 18 rolled in, it was the difference for the Titans. "We knew going into Re- gionals that we had a chance to advance to State. At the turn of the first nine holes the scores for the front nine were already posted. At the time, we were in third place. We knew that if the girls kept playing their game and stayed positive for the second nine, we had a great chance of staying at third place. Once the final scores were posted, the shock set in," said Titan first-year head coach Kristen Harpenau. "This group of girls has a lot of talent. As coaches, we just guide them and teach them all that we can to help improve their games and, overall, their scores. They work hard and it has paid off. We are proud of all of them and excited to go to the state finals with them," said Harpenau. Gibson Southern had three girls break 90 on the day. Mad- ilyn Sperling continued her hot streak, leading the team with an 85. She started with a 39 on the front nine and fin- ished with a 46. Haley Hughes was one shot back at 86. She started with a 45 on the front nine and then finished strong with a 42. Vanessa Schmitt struggled on the front nine opening with a 48, but then got hot on the back nine to shoot a 40 that included a birdie on the par five 15th hole. It was one shot better than anyone on Gibson Southern or Jasper on the back nine. She finished with an 88. Adr yauna Redden opened her round with a nine on the par five first, but then limit- ed the damage to a 49 on the front nine and rallied for a 46 on the back to shoot 95. Gibson Southern's team score was 22 strokes better than when they played their first tournament of the season on Countr y Oaks in early Au- gust. "At that time, only two of the players had much expe- rience in high school golf. One other player had played one or two matches last year. The girls have played a lot of golf since then. They quick- ly get used to the routine of traveling and playing in large tournaments. Combine that experience with the hard work they have put in, and they felt pretty comfor table going to Countr y Oaks for the third time this season," said Harpenau. Castle blistered Countr y Oaks for a team 296 to win the Regional. The Knights' L ydia Bauersfeld and Ash- ley Kirkland both shot 72 for medalist honors with Bauersfeld winning the re- gional in a playof f. Castle's other two scoring players shot 76 as they easily won the team title by 48 strokes over second place Bedford Nor th Lawrence, which shot 344. The other team scores were: 3) Gibson Southern 355, 4) Jasper 355, 5) Terre Haute S. 360 6) Ev. Mater Dei 379, 7) Ev. Memorial 386, 8) Barr-Reeve 388, 9) Nor th- view 389, 10) S. Knox 395, 11) Springs Valley 399, 12) Terre Haute N. 405, 13) Seymour 408, 14) N. Knox 411, 15) Southridge 436.
