Ver- non last week. In a defensive contest, Pike Central tied South Knox 0-0 last Tuesday. "It was a ver y even match- up. We had several opportu- nities to score, but just could not put that goal away," said Charger Coach Chad West- ern. Lainey Leighty had 10 saves on goal. "We played well on offense and defense. Lainey Leighty was ver y good in goal for us. And the defense played great all night for a 0-0 tie," said Western. On Wednesday the girls again played to a 0-0 tie in regulation and overtime, but fell 4-3 on penalty kicks. "Mt Vernon was a great game too. They have one of the best scorers in the state," said Western. He added, "We limited her to one shot on goal. We had chances to score and kept it 0-0 through regulation and overtime." Boys soccer gets quick start on way to 3-0 win over Dubois By Andy Heuring Press-Dispatch Sports sports@pressdispatch.net Pike Central's boys soccer team jumped on Northeast Dubois immediately with Joey Ridao scoring two goals in the first three minutes. After the initial outburst the game set- tled down and Pike Central went on to win it 3-0. Nolan Nelson added a goal in the second half. Goalie Peyton Howald had a strong night in the net helping the Chargers defense hold the Jeeps scoreless. Howald also got a goalie assist. Other assists came from Isaac Burdette and Jonas Mar- tinez. Pike Central will travel to Gibson Southern on Thurs- day. Chargers fall 1-0 at HH Pike Central lost a 1-0 match to Heritage Hills last Thursday. Heritage Hills' Brock Fick- er scored in the first half to give the Patriots the lead. Pike Central wasn't able to get on the score board and the match ended 1-0 for Heri- tage Hills. Howald as goalie had 10 stops. Pike Central is now 7-7 on the season. Lady Chargers seventh in golf sectional By Andy Heuring Press-Dispatch Sports sports@pressdispatch.net Pike Central's girls golf team placed seventh in the Nor th Knox Sectional on Saturday playing at High Pointe Countr y Club in Bicknell. "We didn't play par tic- ularily good or bad," said Charger coach Jarrod Gideon. Pike Central shot a 427 as a team. Bar r-Reeve won the event with a team 364. They were just four storkes ahead of second place South Knox with 368 and Nor th Knox in third with a 384. Other team scores were: 4) Lin- ton Stockton 402, 5) N. Da- viess 409, 6) Washington 418, 7) Pike Central 427, 8) Sullivan 470 and 9) Prince- ton 472. Senior Chloe Williams in her last high school match shot her best score of the year with a 98. Brailey Mills had a 103 followed by Addy Russell with a 111, Mabr y Shoultz 115 and Grace Good- paster 119. South Knox's Trinity Dubbs was the medalist with a 73. She was eight strokes better than second place Channey Clark of Washing- ton with a 81. It took an 89 as an individual to advance to the regional. CHARGER BOYS CLAIM FIFTH Sophomore Charger Blaine Bar nett finished in 25th place with a time of 18:56 which was a 35-second improvement over last year. Charger head coach Randy Graham said, "Blaine had a big impact in his first meet back with a solid 25th place finish. We had an 18 second split between our first four boys which was fantastic. Several of our retur ners ran at or better than they did this time last year as well." Jeremy Delobel ran 30th in 19:14 followed by Peyton Chanley (31, 19:14) and Dal- las Reutepohler (32, 19:14). Dylan Charles placed 54th in 20:14, Car ter Blackwell was 77th in 21:06, Shane Wood- hull was 81st in 21:17, Jacoby Smith was 82nd in 21:17 and Tyler DeCoursey was 95th in 21:55. Quintin McCormick was 140th in 24:24, Ethan Mann placed 147th in 25:15 and Kenny Gerard was 157th in 26:33. Coach Randy Graham said, "For the first time this sea- son, all of PC's runners were able to take the course at the same time. In his first race back, Blaine Barnett led the way with a 25th place finish for the boys and had a nice pack following him as there was only an :18 second split through the first four run- ners. The boys had strong races from ever yone else as well which showed in their big improvement in the team standings. Twenty teams were represented and the boys finished fifth of 14 com- plete team scores." Coach Graham added, "The girls team saw Xaver y Weis- man win the South Knox Invi- tational for the second straight year and also saw Anna White- head finish with a strong race at 13th. The girls also had strong races from ever yone else as they saw a big team improvement today as well. The girls finished sixth of 13 complete team scores and just three points from fourth. All of our returning girls ran this meet faster than they did this time last season." The next time out for the Chargers was Tuesday's Barr-Reeve Invita- tional. SCHMITT RUNS THIRD FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL A dozen Pike Central Mid- dle schoolers contested the South Knox course with seventh grader Lily Schmitt crossing the finish line in third place with a time of 12:04. She was followed by teammates Audrey Whitehead (21, 12:54), Ava Miller (24, 12:57), Kylie Meyer (50, 13:48), Jessa Ridao (14:09), Eva Cox (76, 14:16), Kinley Blackwell (89, 14:33) and Caleigh Cox (106, 15:03). Also finishing for Pike Cen- tral: Indiana Hill (137, 15:53), Neva Schilling (149, 16:20), Mia Quer y (150, 16:23) and Alivia Weitkamp (159, 16:43). Taylor Russell was the top boy placing 109th in 13:02. Conner Fields was 169th (14:38), Jonathon Kohl was 172 in 14:42 and Gunner Blake was 250th in 19:10.
