Poplar Street, Petersburg The Press-Dispatch Wednesday, September 21, 2022 B-1 Mistakes prove costly as Chargers fall to Washington Hatchets, 41-0 By Arri J. McDonald Press-Dispatch Sports sports@pressdispatch.net Anyone close to the Pike Central Charger football program over the last several years would agree that the program has been steadily im- proving under Coach Kelly Brashear. The Chargers have had several hard-fought losses for which they showed heart and toughness coming back from early deficits. Morale has been more positive, and the Char- gers have had numerous big plays in the early season. So it came as quite a shock last Friday night when the Chargers had to give back the trophy that they had won in last year's game against the Hatchets. It was a game where it seemed like nothing went right, and the Chargers never got anything go- ing on their way to 41-0 loss to Wash- ington. Washington won the toss and de- ferred possession until the second half. Jagar Dent returned the opening kickoff 13 yards for good field po- sition at the 33 yard line, but soph- omore quarterback Matthew Mead- ows was sacked on the first play for a seven-yard loss. Facing long yard- age, PC pushed the ball five yards on two short runs, punted the football to the Hatchets and prepared to settle in on defense. Charger volleyball ties for first at Washington tourney By Andy Heuring Press-Dispatch Sports @pressdispatch.net Pike Central's volleyball team tied for first place at the Washington round robin tour- nament on Saturday. Pike Central got off to a slow start in their first match against South Knox, losing 25- 18 and 25-22. "This could have been a win for us. However, the ladies rebounded quickly and didn't let the game slow them down or discourage them from win- ning more games throughout the day," said Charger head coach Stephanie Shedd. In their second round the Chargers defeated Eastern Greene in an extremely close match. The Chargers pulled out the first game 26-24 and then won the second game 25-23. "This was a close game. We fought for the win and never gave up. Freshman Mya Hud- son stepped up and had an outstanding game, hitting left side and ser ving many aces," said Shedd. In the afternoon game the Chargers won by exactly the same score over Washington, 26-24 and 25-23. "Again this was a close match. The ladies hustled and ser ved ver y well. This was the second game where we had to take our opponent to addition- Weisman repeats as South Knox Invitational champ By James Capozella Pike Central Sports sports@pressdispatch.net The utter exhaustion of giving it your all was shown by many r unners who chal- lenged the South Knox cross countr y course, and Lady Charger sophomore Xaver y Weisman was one of those individuals. As she put it after catching her breath, "coming from be- hind at about the halfway took a lot." Weisman made the move and increased the pace to pocket a 22-second win over Linton Stockton junior Pey- ton Smith. Weisman's 2021 freshman championship was a quick 20:13.60 but a year later she cut it to 19:25.30. Anna Whitehead took 13th in 21:46 and Kaylyn War ner was 36th in 23:43. Kennedy Willis was six sec- onds behind in 39th (23:49), Ashlynn Kirk was 67th (26:08) and Kylee Weathers took 80th (27:00) to round out the scoring. Whitehead cut more than two seconds of f last year's race and fin- ished 16 places higher this year. Jeremy Delobel (552) makes it hurt as he runs in front of Dallas Reutepohler (556) during the South Knox Invitational on Saturday. Delobel finished 30th and Reutepohler was 32nd.
