She was born in Peters- burg, on June 23, 1941, to Lee and Edna (Fox) Cockerham. She attended the Peters- burg First Church of God and was a homemaker. She is sur vived by her daughter, Annette Sharp; son, Kevin Stilwell; sis- ters, Nelda Ellis and Cloet- ta Sipes; grandchildren, Tabitha Willis, Dustin Stilwell, Trisha Bottoms, Michael Matthews, Mag- gie Stilwell, Jason and Matthew Hall; and several great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Wilbert; daughters, Debra Brothers and Tina Matthews; brothers, Travis and Odell Cockerham; sisters, Lois Shuckman and Wanda How- ell; and granddaughter, Nicole Stilwell. Funeral ser vices was at 3 p.m. EST on Monday, Sep- tember 19, 2022, at O.D. Harris Funeral Home, in Pe- tersburg. Burial followed at Stilwell Cemeter y, in Pikev- ille. DUNIGAN, SR. Dr. Gerald Eugene Dun- igan, Sr., 101, of Mt. Vernon, passed away peacefully on September 15, 2022. He was born June 20, 1921, in Slickom Hill, (Pike County) to the late Arthur and Ruth (Loveless) Dunigan. He was a 1939 graduate of Oakland City High School. He attended Indiana Uni- versity Bloomington from 1939-1941 and then gradu- ated from the St. Louis Uni- versity College of Dentistr y in 1944. He began practicing dentistr y in 1946 in Mt. Ver- non alongside Dr. Herman Hirsch, MD and Dr. Neuma Williams, DDS. He practiced dentistr y for 47 years. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Navy, ser ving in World War II and Korea. He was a member of the New Harmony Historical Society, Elks Lodge #277, American Legion Post #5, St. Louis University Alum- ni, Mt. Vernon Chamber of Commerce, American Dental Association, MSDMV School Board and the Mt. Vernon Kiwanis Club. He was a founding member and past president of Western Hills Countr y Club. He is sur vived by his wife of 25 years, Pauline (Travers) Dunigan; children, Dianne (Ron) Compton, of St. Louis, Mo., Dr. David (Carol Quin- ley) Dunigan, of Tampa, Fla., Michael (Kathy) Dunigan, of Bluf fton, S.C., Dr. Patrick (Janet) Dunigan, of Bloom- ington, Timothy Dunigan, of Indianapolis, and Kelly (Kyle) Jones, of Mt. Vernon; 13 grandchildren, Richard Compton, John Compton, Anne Albar t, Matthew Dun- igan, Kate Dunigan-Atlee, Anne Dunigan, Brendon Dunigan, Amanda Dunigan, Christopher Dunigan, Kelly Michael Dunigan, Marga- ret ("Maggie") Jones, Molly Jones and Emily Jones; 13 great-grandchildren, Kaiya, Benjamin and Kendall Dun- igan, Mateo and Ellie Dun- igan-Atlee, Phinneas and Taluallah Wilson, Ada Comp- ton, Maggie Albar t, Devyn and Maeve Thomas, Jamison Dunigan and Levina Dunigan; brother, Dr. Howard (Grace) Dunigan and family; and niec- es and nephews. 'BILL' HUEY William Ray 'Bill' Huey, 92, of Sandborn, went to Heaven peacefully, on Sunday, Sep- tember 11, 2022, at Washing- ton. He was bor n on May 24, 1930 at home, in Pike Coun- ty, to William W. and Mae (Chandler) Huey. Bill mar- ried his loving wife, Gloria Ann (Atkinson) Huey, on Januar y 1, 1950. He was a member of the Sandbor n Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge and Easter n Star. He also had ser ved on the Nor th Knox School Board, Soil and Wa- ter Conser vation Board and as a Republican Committee- man, attending several Na- tional Conventions. He trav- eled throughout the world with the People-to-People Delegation. She was born November 8, 1950, in Oakland City. She had been a resident of Francisco since moving from Winslow in 1966. She was a former member of Francisco Gospel Ministr y Church in Francisco. She had taught Sunday School and Children's Church for many years. She was a member of the Francisco Lions Club and had worked for Gibson Gen- eral Hospital as a CNA then in purchasing. She is sur vived by her daughters, Sherilyne (Quen- tin) Drew and Kathr yn Huebner, both of Francis- co; seven grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; two spe- cial adopted children; several adopted grandchildren; and several adopted great-grand- children. She was preceded in death by her father, Paul Wade; mother, Gladys (Johns) Knight; and husband, Ken- neth Huebner, Jr. in 2017. Funeral ser vices will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, September 21, 2022, at Colvin Funeral Home, in Princeton, with Rev. Tam- my Davis of ficiating. Colvin Funeral Home is honored to ser ve the Huebner family. Obituaries STANLEY OTIS NELSON Stanley Otis Nelson, 90, of Otwell, passed away Septem- ber 18, 2022 in Jasper. He was born December 4, 1931 in Indianapolis, Ind. to Paul and Lenoa Sullivan Nelson. In 1953 he married Carol Shepard. To this union two children were born, Valerie Ann (Keith) Nelson Nolan and Vance Alan (Elaine) Nelson. In 1973 Carol passed away. In 1974 he married Ruth Ann Boger and became a parent to Vicki Boger Rauch and Brian Boger. He leaves several be- loved grandchildren and great grandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews. Stanley grew up in the White Oak area of Pike County and at- tended the White Oak School. In 1940 the Paul Nelson family moved to Indianapolis for two years. After that, the family moved back to Winslow and he attended Winslow School until the seventh grade. At that time he quit school to work in the carpenter business with his father and brothers. When unable to find steady work, Stanley joined the Army on November 18, 1949. He took basic training at Fort Knox, KY. After training he was sent to Japan and assigned to the 1st Cavalr y 1st 8th Combat Divi- sion Engineers. His first few months of duty were normal but that soon changed in June of 1950. North Korea invad- ed South Korea and Stanley's Company was deployed and his life was changed forever. On Februar y 14-15 in 1951 He was taken prisoner by the Chinese near Chipyong Ni, Korea. He was severely wounded, losing his left leg among numerous wounds. He was beaten over the head with a shovel and left to die. US troops advanced the next day and he was rescued. He spent the next 11 months in a Veterans Hospital. He re- tired Januar y 31, 1952 from the Army. He was awarded the Silver Star, Purple Heart with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters, POW Medal, National De- fense Ser vice Medal, Korean Ser vice Medal with 4 bronze ser vice stars, United Nations Ser vice Medal, Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Cita- tion Badge, and an Individual Conferment of the French Croix De Guerre by the Gov- ernment of France. The young Corporal returned home to Winslow. He was eager to find work but had no educa- tion and was severely handi- capped. The first place he looked was the International Harvester Company in Evansville, IN and surprisingly with his handicap the company hired him. He worked for the IHC for four years. In 1956 Stanley en- rolled in Oakland City College and graduated in 1960 with a B.S. Degree. In 1960 he ran for Circuit Court Clerk of Pike County. He served in that position for 7 years and then accepted a posi- tion with the Pike County School Corp. and filled many positions there. He retired from the School Corp on May 29, 1980. He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Roy, Buster, Henr y, and Donald Lee; sisters Francis and Gayle. Funeral ser vices for Stanley will take place 11 a.m. EDT on Friday, September 23, at Har- ris Funeral Home in Peters- burg, with visitation from 4-8 p.m. EDT on Thursday, Sep- tember 22, and Friday from 9 a.m. EDT until ser vice time at the funeral home. Blue Jeans Center board members Jerri Sue McCoy (left) and Marlis Day greeted shoppers at the Monroe City Dollar General where people could purchase items or make a monetary con- tribution. All donations made at that location stayed in Monroe City. Patoka Lake park ranger talks bees at Petersburg Public Library Park Ranger Jim Merkley from Patoka Lake visited the Petersburg Public Library last week as part of the library's "Bee a Good Reader," sign-up program. Merk- ley came complete with bees and the equipment that he uses to keep them and collect their honey. Merkley was very informative and gave everyone a sample of beeswax to keep and a taste of the delicious honey. According to Merkley, it is a very good year for his bees. Merkley answered many questions and everyone en- joyed watching the little bees inside the plexiglass hive.
