By Janice Barniak SG Star-Times Editor editor@sgstartimes.com Gibson County will host the Professional Disc Golf Associ- ation amateur disc golf world tournament across the coun- ty June 21-25; and organiz- ers are hoping the communi- ty will rally to feed and enter- tain the out-of-towners. Sponsored by Toyota, so far 336 men and 83 women have registered, including players from Okayama City, Japan; Australia; New Zealand; Ice- land; Finland; Mexico; Cana- da; the United Kingdom and all over the United States. Organized by the non-profit Dads Fore Disc Golf, Director Steven Waites sees the event as a way to show off what Gib- son County has to offer, and maybe even bring people who would want to live or work in this area. Registration hasn't closed, the event expects to see 450 - 550 players, who will likely bring their friends and family. That's meant a lot of coor- dination with local hotels and businesses, but it's also a busi- ness opportunity for people who want to help feed and en- tertain the crowd. "Princeton's the focal point," Waites said. So far, Downtown Prince- ton Inc. has volunteered to run a block party, and close down part of state street with mini games and putting chal- lenges; six food trucks are planned, and 15 -20 disc golf vendors will be sell their wares. Waites hopes that during the Tuesday night block par- ty locals will also come out to mingle and show players the Hoosier Hospitality of the county. The group is planning a night at the Toyota Events Center at the fairgrounds, and they plan to rent Bosse field to create a small disc golf course. The expected revenue im- pact will be around $1 million between food, gas and other things players will buy. He hopes local business- es will put out "welcome disc golfer" signs on their marquis, for example, and will thank them for coming. He would also like to organize a scaven- ger or treasure hunt involving local businesses. "The biggest thing is prov- ing we can do it," Waites said. "The disc golf organization Dads Fore Disc Golf has prov- en ourselves. We started five years ago and always had the intention to host an event." This event has moved from Orlando last year to Princeton this year. "There's so much more we can do," Waites said. "We have the means to host bigger tour- naments with more players." 200 W.
