TITAN TRACK & FIELD Good Luck at Sectionals Titans' five-game win streak broken by Jasper Wildcats By Mike Sandifar Star-Times Sports Sports@sgstartimes.com The Jasper Wildcats brought a 16 -4 record to Gib- son Southern Monday eve- ning for a non-conference high school baseball game, and they left with a 17-4 re- cord, after taking an 11-4 vic- tory over the Titans. The loss broke a five-game win skein for Gibson South- ern and dropped the Titans to 13-5 on the 2022 diamond campaign. In a game that turned in- to a slug fest, the contest started as a pitcher's duel, as neither team could score in the first two innings of the fray, and in the third frame, it was Gibson Southern that drew first blood, pushing a run across home plate in the bottom of the third to take a 1-0 lead. That lead didn't last long, however, as Jasper scored five runs in the top of the fourth inning. Gibson Southern came back in the bottom half of the fourth with a pair of runs to move within 5 -3 after four full innings of baseball. Neither team scored in the fifth inning, but the visi- tors pounded the Titan pitch- ing staff for six more runs in the top of the sixth to put the game away, taking an insur- mountable 11-3 lead. Gibson Southern scored a run in the bottom of the sixth frame to reduce the Jasper lead to 11-4 advantage, and when neither team could score in the seventh inning, that 11-4 margin turned out to be the final score. A fter the slow offensive start by both teams, both clubs hit the baseball seem- ingly at will, as the visitors pounded out 18 hits in the seven-inning encounter, while the hosts knocked out a dozen hits against the Wild- cat pitching staff. Senior Kaden Hurless led the Titan hitting barrage with three hits including a double, in three official at- bats, while classmate Logan Maurer had a pair of hits, in- cluding a double in four offi- cial trips to the plate. Juniors Bradyn Epperson and Garett Reid, and seniors Drew Foster, Regan Farmer, Oliver Hamilton, Levi Dick- erson, and freshman Seth Parsons all had one hit to ac- count for the 12 Titan hits in the fray. Maurer, Hurless, Dicker- son, and senior Colton Okes all received a free pass to first base, while Foster was hit by a pitch to earn a trip to first. Titan hitters, despite tag- ging the Wildcat hurlers for a dozen hits (the visitors had 18 hits) in the 11-4 out- ing, left 14 runners on base in their seven innings at the plate. The Wildcat pitchers struck out 11 Titans in the non-conference tilt. Gibson Southern Coach Chris May used five pitchers in the game in an attempt to stop the rout, but only Hur- less, who pitched an inning and a third and struck out four Jasper batters, did not allow a run in the contest. All 11 Wildcat runs were earned, as the Titans com- mitted just one error in the game, while Jasper fielders kicked the ball around three times in the contest. Gibson Southern did not have any time to mourn the defeat, as the Titans were scheduled to take on Tell City in a Pocket Athletic Conference (PAC) on Tues- day in Tell City, then the Ti- tans were slated to tangle with Wood Memorial on Fri- day evening at 5 at Gibson Southern. Last night (Monday), Gib- son Southern was scheduled to take on Evansville Memo- rial at Bosse Field in a 7 p.m. battle, and this evening, the Titans host PAC foe Wash- ington in a conference outing at Gibson Southern at 5 p.m. Titans waste no time scoring on Marksmen, claim 9-1 victory By Mike Sandifar Star-Times Sports sports@sgstartimes.com Host Gibson Southern put nine hits on the scoreboard, had 10 walks, and had one bat- ter hit by pitch to put 20 run- ners on base to pop visiting Tell City 9 -1 in Pocket Ath- letic Conference (PAC) high school baseball action at Tell City last Thursday to move to 15 -5 overall and 7-4 in confer- ence play (4th place). The Titans wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, plating a pair of runs in the top of the first inning to jump out a quick 2-0 advantage. Gibson Southern could not get a run across in the top the second frame, but in the top of the third inning, the Titans scored a run to go up 3-0 on the Marksmen. The eventual winners could not find a way to score in the top of the fourth inning, but the Marksmen pushed a run home in the bottom of the in- ning to move to within 3-1 af- ter four full innings. In the top of the fifth, Gib- son Southern scored three runs to take a 6 -1 lead, and after failing to score a run in the top of the sixth, the Titans brought home another three runs in the top of the seventh to account for the final 9 -1 score. A fter giving up the sin- gle run in the bottom of the fourth, GSHS pitcher Oliver Hamilton did not allow a run over the final three innings, The senior hurler struck out eight Marksmen and walked just one in his seven full in- nings for the Titans. Hamilton gave up just two hits in the seven innings, and the only run scored against Hamilton was unearned. Seniors Kaden Hurless, Levi Dickerson, and Colton Okes all had two hits for Gib- son Southern. One of Hur- less's hits was a triple, and Okes had a double. Dicker- son had three runs batted in (RBIs) for the Titans, while Okes had two RBIs in the con- ference tilt. Senior Regan Farmer, ju- nior Bradyn Epperson and freshman Seth Parsons each had one hit. Senior Logan Maurer worked Tell City pitchers for three walks, while Epperson, Hurless, Hamilton, Dicker- son, Parsons, and junior Ga- rett Reid all received a free pass to first base by the Tell City hurlers. The Titans had eight stolen bases with Hurless, Maurer, and senior Mason Yancey all getting a pair of steals, while Reid and Farmer each had one theft. Both teams committed three errors in the league outing. "We played really well against Tell City, and Ham- ilton was really tough on the mound for us," said Titan Coach Chris May in a post- game interview. "We hit the ball well, and our batters made them pitch to us, that fact showing up in the stats with our 10 walks. "We are again playing well, but as I have said before, every day is a different day. We must stay focused if we are going to reach our goals for the year. "We still have some very good teams left on our sched- ule, so we have no time to re- lax." Gibson Southern was sched- uled to tangle with Evansville North in a non-conference en- counter on Saturday. Evans- ville North was 19 -4 on the year, heading into Saturday's game.
