The Chargers have not won that many games in a row since they won four in Janu- ary 2018, which was Coach Hunter Elliott's first year as coach. That four-game streak showed the Chargers defeating Washington 47-39, North Knox 72-32, South Spencer 64- 48 and Barr-Reeve 41-37. This year, the boys' varsity team is off to a good start compared to previous years, standing at 5 -8 for the season. On Tuesday, January 11, the Chargers faced off with Vincennes Lincoln and eked out a win of 40 -39. A fter a hard-played two quarters, the Char- gers were tied with the Alices 19 -19 at half- time. In the third quarter, the Chargers bat- tled to attain the lead, and with a strong de- fense and some good shots in the basket, they did just that by scoring two points over the Al- ices. The fourth quarter began and the Char- gers fought harder than ever, gaining the lead, then losing it in a heated quarter. By the end of the fourth quarter, they needed two points to win, and at the last possible second, Ken- drick Sorgius got fouled and sent to the free throw line, where he scored the two winning points for the game. The Chargers were led in scoring by Quade Morton with 17 points. Following him were Sorgius with 11 points, Julian Gish with eight and Peyton Howald with four points. Coach Elliott said, "I was very proud of the intensity and how hard we played, especial- ly on the defensive side of the basketball to- night. I thought we were locked in and played hard for 32 minutes, it was the most consis- tent effort we have put in this year. I knew they would want to really slow the game down and would most likely zone. I thought we took care of the ball and moved it well, really playing in- side out. We did not finish quite as well in the paint as I would like us to, but we were getting the right shots. We built several 5 -8 point leads throughout the game, but Vincennes battled back and while we had the lead a majority of the game, it was pretty close throughout. We finished the game with four straight stops and executed very well on our last play to get Ken- dric to the free throw line and win the game." "Quade played a very nice game, going 5 -8 from three and finishing with 17 points. I am very proud of the way Kendric has been play- ing and improving. He finished with a double 11 points and 10 rebounds, including the go ahead free throw with seven seconds left. Ju- lian Gish added eight points and Peyton How- ald added four. I really thought Braden did a nice job defensively and added four assists with a couple nice drives where he dumped it off for easy finishes." "We have been on the short end of a lot of very close games this year, so it was great to get a road win in a tight game. We played a con- sistent 32 minutes of basketball and we need to keep building on that." FRIDAY, JANUARY 14 The Pike Central Chargers went on to play Heritage Hills on Friday night, on their home court, overpowering them and winning by a score of 56 -54. From the beginning of the game's start, the Chargers attacked the ball and threw down some hard defense, paving the way for them to gain a seven-point lead on the Patriots by the end of the first half. In the third quarter of the game, the Chargers turned up the heat CHARGERS SMASH HOMECOMING WEEK Charger swimming fights through a week of meets By Matthew Haycraft The Pike Central Charger swim team com- peted in three meets this last week, with the boys taking first in two and third in one, and the girls taking a first, then a third and a sec- ond in the last meet of the week.
