However in the fourth quarter, the Patriots were able to get past our varsity boys and add up the points to tie the game, right at the end of the quarter. The Chargers were ready to battle the last few seconds of the game for those winning points. Sorgi- us went to shoot for the bas- ket and got fouled again, right at the end of the game, where he landed the winning points from the free throw line, for the second game in a row. The Chargers' lead scorer for the game was Sorgius with 17 points. Following him was Morton with 13 points, Pey- ton Howald with 11 points, Gish with nine points and Al- ex Clark with six points. Coach Elliott comment- ed, "This was our best game of the year to date. We were locked in from the start and really played a great game, beating a very strong Her- itage Hills team. We built our lead up to 14 points in the third quarter. Heritage Hills would cut into that lead, bringing it to a tied game with under a minute to go. Our kids never faltered and kept playing the next play, which is another area we stress. We cannot get too high or too low, we just move on to the next play. We were locked in and at the end of the game, we set a ball screen and hit Kendric on the pop, who attacked the rim hard and got fouled. Kendric stepped up and for the second game in a row, won the game from the free throw line, hit- ting both free throws." "Kendric Sorgius had a huge game with 17 points and nine rebounds. Peyton Howald was also really big for us with 11 points and four rebounds. Both Kendric and Peyton were tasked with de- fending Trent Sisley and I thought both of them really made him earn every point he got. Quade Morton added 13 points and five rebounds, and Julian Gish had nine points and seven rebounds. Alex Clark added six points." "This was a complete team effort from start to finish. We have been really stress- ing the importance of play- ing our game for 32 minutes. I was very proud of them. They went out and earned that win. We showed what we are capa- ble of and it is a great game to build on." SATURDAY, JANUARY 15 The Chargers faced off against Wood Memorial in their Homecoming game on Saturday, obliterating them by a score of 52-37. In the first quarter of the game, the Chargers started a little slow, scoring only six points to the Trojans' seven. However, the second quarter rolled around and the Char- gers found that fire that they had carried through the last two games and left the score 24-19, gaining the lead by the halftime buzzer. A fter half- time, the Chargers were still on fire, bringing that fight from the second quar- ter all the way through the sec- ond half of the game. Leading the Chargers in scoring for this game was Gish with a tally of 18 points. Following him were Morton with 14 points, Sorgius with 11 points, Peyton Howald with six points, Clark with two and Braden Howald with one point. Coach Elliott stated, "This is always a bit of a rivalry game, with them being so close and they are always fired up to play us. Coming off of Fri- day night, I was a little worried we might come out flat, but I thought the boys did a great job of being ready to go and competing from the start. We did have a couple miscommu- nication plays in the first half that allowed them to get open for a couple shots. We fin- ished the half strong with mo- mentum, with Kendric taking a charge and then Chase find- ing Kendric in the corner for three as time expired. The sec- ond half, I thought we really attacked their zone much bet- ter and Peyton Howald did a great job of finding our shoot- ers once we got him the ball in the middle. We got in the pass- ing lanes and created some of- fense off of our defense." "Julian Gish really played well. He finished with 18 points, three rebounds and three steals. He also locked up the Falls kid, who scored 15 points in the first half and did not score in the second half. Quade Morton added 14 points, five rebounds and three assists. Kendric Sor- gius had another big game, with 11 points, three rebounds and four as- sists. Peyton Howald added six points, five rebounds and three assists." "I thought we really did a nice job in the second half de- fensively. We missed some good looks in the half-court and transition that could have pushed the lead to a little more, but we did our job on the other end and got our third win in a row for the week." Elliott went on to com- ment about the team and their game play for the week, say- ing, "All the credit goes to the kids. This was a tough week with four games in six days and to win our last three in the fashion we did I think speaks volumes of their work. I have been telling them to keep pounding the stone, to keep working hard and believing in themselves and we would eventually break through. I think we took a big step this week, we have to keep pound- ing the stone and continue to build and learn." Lady Chargers suffer a string of losses By Matthew Haycraft Pike Central's Lady Char- gers suffered a week of loss- es to Loogootee and North Posey. The Lady Chargers var- sity team played at Loogootee on Tuesday, January 11, losing by a score of 36 -25. During the first half of the game, the Chargers came out strong, only being one point shy of a tie at halftime. How- ever, in the third quarter of the game, they seemed to lose their fight and only had one two-point score, made by Del- aney Welch, leaving the score at 25 -15 by the quarter's end. A fter that, the Lady Chargers hit the court in the fourth quar- ter of the game with determi- nation to make up their lost points, but were unable to, even though they fought hard. Leading the Lady Chargers in scoring was Mallory Hunt with a tally of eight points scored during the game. Fol- lowing her were Kya Sullivan with six points, Brailey Mills with five points, Kahle Young with four points and Delaney Welch with two points. The Lady Charger junior varsity also played Loogootee for two quarters on Tuesday, defeating them by a score of 18 - 10. The JV team took the court and ran it for the two quarters, scoring nine points in the first and nine again in the second, mostly in free throws. They were lead in scoring by Kee- na Young, with seven points scored during the game. Fol- lowing her were Shelby Mead- ows with four, Ashlynn Kirk and Tiffany Arteaga, both with three points each, and Ruby Sallee with one point. JANUARY 15 Pike Central's Lady Char- ger varsity team went on to play at North Posey on Satur- day, losing by a score of 45 -44 in a close game. By the end of the first half of the game, the Lady Chargers had fought and pulled out some good defense, but came up just a little short on taking the lead, leaving the score at 20 -16 at the halftime buzzer. A fter half- time, the Lady Chargers came out with a vengeance, ready to make up the lost points and gain the lead. They battled with North Posey and gained the lead by three points. They ended the third quarter, leav- ing the score at 31-28, with two three-pointers and a free throw, made by Kahle Young, and four two-pointers, made by Mills, Sullivan and Hunt. However, after gaining the lead, they would have to fight even harder to keep it, and they did. The Lady Chargers battled with North Posey, but were un- able to keep that lead and end- ed up losing by one point. The Lady Chargers var- sity team was lead in scor- ing by Mills with a total of 17 points scored throughout the game. Following her were Kah- le Young with 10 points, Hunt with nine points and Sullivan with eight points. Coach Kyle McCutchan said, "Against North Posey, we played well, but down the stretch, we turned it over too much and got too passive on of- fense, and I have to do a bet- ter job getting us to close out games. I loved our effort this week, but we were unable to pull out the wins." Pike Central's junior var- sity also faced off with North Posey on Saturday, losing by a score of 40 -23. The Lady Char- ger JV came out strong in the first quarter of the game, scor- ing three two-pointers and four free throws. However, during the second quarter, North Posey pulled away from them in points, scoring 14 to the La- dy Charger four for the quar- ter, leaving the score 13-24 at halftime. During the second half of the game, the Chargers could not seem to put together the points to catch up. Coach McCutchan wrapped up the week's games saying, "We played two competitive games, but against Loogootee, we just could not make enough shots to win, but we gave great effort on defense."
