Winslow citizens are sad- dened to hear of the passing of Mary Lee Russ, 94, on Sept. 24. Mary was Winslow's fourth grade teacher and taught ma- ny of our Winslow citizens, like our daughter, Laura. To those who know Mary and rel- atives, sister-in-law, Marilee Russ Hume, remember all the great times and share memo- ries and more great memories will come your way. Mary is missed in Winslow. Have fun as you decorate for the children and adults to en- joy with a smile. We hope the children can trick or treat at the houses they know. Be safe and social distance. Winslow and Petersburg se- niors will not meet again un- til Governor Holcomb gives the okay. Sweets Column, Winslow, IN 47598 received no post- cards this week, but we do have one point of interest. Winslow Patoka River is still low even with the little tenth of an inch of rain that came Monday, Sept. 28, mov- ing in around 4 a.m., the heavi- est was south in Kentucky. We were going to plant the purple Mums in the garden spot, but the clay soil was too hard, so maybe another rainy day. The trees are changing their col- ors every day now, you can see green trees with a splash of red, yellow, orange; green trees with red tops, yellows and oranges beginning to cover most of the trees. Bush- es and ornamental trees have begun to change into a red or rust color; and the pine trees are getting new growth of yel- low tops. Corn and bean fields are being harvested, but we have seen some fields that must have been planted late, they are still green. Just about every yard has some type of fall decora- tion up and a few that have decorated for Halloween. In Winslow, the Ice family has their corner all done up and it looks great. Cobwebs. We passed by the Bones family and they are not want- ing the summer to end be- cause they are by the swim- ming pool and having a great time. In our area of Brownstown, we have heard the dogs bark- ing as they answer the howls and barks of the coyotes that are in the field and the woods on the spoil banks. While all of us were out riding around with Mom, we saw the Blues Brothers' black and white police car with the big speaker on top cruising Broadway St. in Princeton. The driver was a white-haired, white-bearded man. With many of our relatives in the hospital and recover- ing, Mom couldn't visit or see them, but she did have a great visit with Aunt Jean as they looked through the pic- tures Mom brought with her. Aunt Jean saw an early birth- day gift of a cute little witch on wheels. You sit in on the floor, roll it backwards and let it go across the floor. Mom loves it. The week to end Septem- ber was cool or cold to some, where the heater and wood stove was on again. Sweater and jackets were worn in the morning and again towards evening. I told you all about the woolly worms being seen in full black, but here in our yard, they are black, brown, black, which means it will be a harsh winter. The persim- mon seed was opened and the one shown on T.V. is a spoon and that means lots of snow to shovel. We didn't have what we call a true winter last year, so maybe this year will be what these signs say. The Pike County Tractor Drive was Sept. 26, but I couldn't go. How- ever, the countrysides they traveled would have been a great area to see; the old towns that were booming with people, churches, schools in the North- west part of the county. The Young Farmers al- ways have some tasty food for the 28 -mile tour be- hind the wheels of a tractor on the backroads of Pike County. It's great to see friends and relatives like Tim, Jeanette, Cooney, Lisa and Laura. We heard from Donnie and the Lawrence Meyer Way has been taken down, but it wasn't for Uncle Lawrence. It would be great if he did have a part of this world named after him. It's also really nice to see my Mom, Mildred, for at least two weeks, so she can see her an- imals and see how the area of Winslow and the surround- ing areas, like Francisco, have changed over these years. She can ride comfortably in Ava, the truck, and she can look out and see all the wonders around us. She will be back again when she will turn 94 on Halloween, that is why I can say she is the good witch of Winslow. Last Thursday, October 1, was our Winslow Lions Club meal meeting, where I really wanted to take my Mom, but this didn't happen. Maybe I can take her to another meet- ing in the future. We all had some delicious homemade soup and sandwiches, plus those sweet treats. Then, we discussed some other events we would like to hold and we talked about the Open Fun Horse Show, which was Oct. 3. More about that next week. Not too much going on this week, so the lights will begin to dim. Keep an eye on fami- ly and friends. Slow down and see all the wonders in your ar- ea. Stop for school buses. As always, smile, wave and say "hi" to everyone you see this week.
