Sixty-five years ago, the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revo- lution Past President Gertrude S. Carraway encouraged the DAR to make a resolution designating September 17-23 as Constitution Week. DAR Members adopted the resolution on April 21, 1955. When members of the United States Congress received the resolution, they initiated a dis- cussion on June 7, 1955 that resulted in Senator William F. Knowland of California presenting a resolution to observe Constitu- tion Week. After the passage of the resolution by both Houses of Congress, President Eisenhower issued a proclamation on August 19, 1955 to celebrate Constitution Week. The celebration was so successful that Senator Knowl- and spearheaded a move to have the President designate Septem- ber 17-23 annually as Constitu- tion Week. The resolution was signed into Public Law 915 on August 2, 1956. In honor of Constitution Week, members of the Col. Fred- erick Hambright Chapter NSDAR assembled Constitution Study Kits which they delivered to all of the Kings Mountain Elementary Schools. The Study Kits con- tain pocket sized Constitutions, fact sheets, games, and puzzles which teachers can use to teach their students about the US Con- stitution.
