POWELL michael@cfmedia.info Caring for their patients' dental health has been a family business and "Job One" for the Plaster family of dentists for 94 years, starting back in 1926 with Dr. Hubert Plaster. According to their web site, the Plasters "have been synonymous with family den- tistry in Cleveland County since 1926", when two brothers, Dr. Hubert Plaster and Dr. Harold Plaster, Sr., began practicing in uptown Shelby. The family tradition has been carried on by Dr. Harold Plaster, Jr., and Dr. Will Plaster. Dr. Will's office, located at 1455 East Marion St., Shelby, continues provid- ing family dental care their patients of all ages have come to know and expect. In answering some ques- tions for Community First Media, Dr. Plaster noted he received his Bachelor's Degree in Biology from Wofford College in 1993, and graduated from UNC School of Dentistry in 1997. He said he continued his dental education, complet- ing an AEGD Residency as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy Dental Corps at Naval Dental Center, Norfolk, VA. Plaster served as the Dental Officer on the "USS Ponce" (LPD-15) from 1998- 2000 and served on deploy- ment during the Kosovo Conflict. His involvement in the profession has been, by his own admission, "exten- sive" since returning to Shelby in 2000. Dr. Plaster is the only dentist in the office, but has a staff of three: Office manager Lisa Tolley has been with him since 2000; Hygienist Anitra Jones, who he said has been with him since 2000 and was his first hire; and Sabrina Glenn, his Dental assistant. Glenn was hired in 2008 when Anitra went to Hygiene School full- time. Regarding Anitra, Dr. Plaster noted, "She was a former Teller at First National Bank. I trained her and she worked as my dental assis- tant from 2000 to 2008, then was off to Hygiene School at Catawba Valley Community College. She has been the Hygienist at our office since 2010." Plaster said he has been the only dentist at the prac- tice since his father retired in May 2010. "I worked with Harold Jr., for 10 years (2000-2010). I took over my grandfather's practice in September 2000. He retired at the age of 83 after 60 years of practicing Dentistry. Hubert (his great- uncle) was the first to Shelby in 1926 and was the mayor of Shelby at his death in 1976. (My) Grandfather and great-uncle both attended the University of Maryland Dental School, as there was not a dental school in the state until the mid-50's," he said. Dr. Plaster noted his office has been at its cur- rent location since 1990. Previously, they were located at the Medical Arts See PLASTERS, Page 10 Plasters make caring for your teeth their business for 94 years Dr. Will Plaster and Haley Glenn, 16, with her mom, Sabrina Glenn.
