BeachBlast was one of six events nominated for this prestigious award. "This nomination speaks to the excellence of leader- ship from our Special Events Director, Christy Conner," stated Marilyn Sellers, City Manager. "Starting her ca- reer with the City of Kings Mountain in 2001, Christy was promoted in 2017 as the Special Events Director. Her leadership brings en- ergy and enthusiasm to all our events. With her vision and ability to rally a team of staff and volunteers, the BeachBlast Festival has grown to be recognized across the State of NC and the Southeast." "The Special Events team is honored by this nomination," stated Christy Conner, Special Events Director. "I would like to express my sincere thanks to our team of staff and vol- unteers. This would not be possible without the cre- ativity, dedication and pas- sion of this group. I am very grateful for our City Council and Administration and their continued support. Through their support and leadership, we have a beautiful state of the art venue to host Beach- Blast and other festivals and events. With confidence, I can say that Kings Mountain is on the right path to creat- ing a vibrant entertainment district in Downtown and I'm excited to be a part of it!" Each year, members of the Carolina Beach Music Awards Association nomi- nate the best in Beach Music entertainment, such as, radio announcers, bands, events, and clubs. After the nominations are announced, members then vote for the official winners of each category. "It is really great that the CBMA has named Beach- Blast 2019 as one of the top 6 events in the Southeast as announced on FM 94.9 The Surf." says Mayor Scott Neisler. "For one weekend in the piedmont of the Carolinas, we take our shoes off and pretend to walk in the sand enjoying some great beach music! This is a well-deserved ac- colade for our staff because we have no beach! Make plans now to enjoy us in 2021 and see what all the fun is about!" The Carolina Beach Music Awards will be held virtually, November 15th, 2020. The awards cer- emony will air online at www.949thesurf.com. The time of the event has yet to be determined. (Photo provided by Angela Padgett) Homeowners who don't look forward to dusting off their rakes each fall might be happy to learn that mulching fallen leaves with a mower may be a healthier and less labor intensive way to confront a yard covered in leaves. For 20 years, turfgrass specialists at Michigan State University studied how lawns reacted to having ground up leaves left on the lawn and the re- sults were overwhelmingly positive. Researchers found that tiny pieces of mulched leaves eventually sifted down through the turf and provided the lawn with essential nutrients. Mulched leaves also served to control future weed growth by covering up bare spots between turf plants. Such spots typically provided openings for weed seeds to germinate and ultimately infect lawns. In fact, re- searchers found that mulching leaves for just three years could produce a nearly 100 percent decrease in dandelion and crabgrass growth. Homeowners with mulching mowers that also have bags can even help their gardens by alternat- ing using the mower with and without the bag on once leaves begin to fall. When mowing with the bag on, mulched leaves can then be used as mulch in landscape beds and vegetable gardens. The value of mulched leaves
