I am still surprised and d e v a s t a t e d that such a tragic event could have taken place in New York City on a bright Tuesday morning on Sept. 11, 2001 when airplanes were flown deliberately into the Twin Towers. It's hard to believe 19 years has passed since the trag- edy took place. Up until this tragedy I only thought of Sept. 11, as the day before my birthday, as well as the actual birthday of a friend. Of course, now it has a whole new mean- ing. I have written about this tragedy for many years for one reason. I do not want this horror to be forgotten. It seems in our modern world that tragedies are often for- gotten. Peo- ple say to just move on and let the past be the past, but I just don't think that way. Now, I am not say- ing that I want this day to be spent in anguish; in moaning and groan- ing and weeping. That would not accomplish anything. I am referring here to remembrance and appreciation for the lives that were lost that day and the difficulties endured by the survi- vors. A lot of my memories from that day are cen- tered around my fourth graders at Tryon Ele- mentary School who sat with me and watched the tragedy take place on live television. They were a great group of students, and I ad- mired them for the way they handled that situ- ation. It was one of my best groups ever, and it seemed that we had a special bond because of what we experienced that tragic day. The patriotism that was displayed after Sept. 11, was amaz- ing. The "red, white, and blue" was flown ev- erywhere, and it was a beautiful sight. Soldiers were honored and ap- preciated for their ser- vice and bravery. These things are what make America great, and I am proud to be an Ameri- can. And one last thought here is please "thank a veteran for their ser- vice".
