We get upset when people have said or done some- thing to us that we do not like, but how do we respond when we realize that we have offended or hurt others? Choice One: We ignore what we have done and hope the person forgets about it. Choice Two: We get into a bigger confrontation with the person and make matters worse. Choice Three: We at- tempt to restore the relationship with the person. The Bible helps us out with the an- swer. Romans 14:19 states, "So then, we must pursue what promotes peace and what builds up one another." 2 Little Words - "I'm sorry." Sim- ple, short, easy, yet POWERFUL! So why is it so hard to say? Some people refuse to apologize when they have wounded someone and will act like nothing happened. That's called pride. Proverbs 13:10a states, "Where there is strife, there is pride…" Pride causes us to speak when it's best to be quiet. It provokes us to react rudely when walk- ing away and calming down would be more beneficial. It takes humility to admit that we hurt someone and maturity to endeavor in "righting the wrong." Today, many are on edge and families are falling apart. How much better would our relationship dynamic be if we demonstrated sincere remorse for offenses? Let's value the people we care about and not take them for granted. Remember to enjoy them and make sweet memories. David states in Psalm 90:12, "Teach us to realize the brevity of life, so that we may grow in wisdom." Meditate on the following scrip- tures: Mathew 22:37-40: "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest command- ment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments." Luke 6:31 - "Treat others the same way you want them to treat you." Romans 12:10 - "Love e a c h o t h e r w i t h g e n u i n e affection and take delight in honoring each other." Philippians 2:3 - "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves." PRAY THIS PRAYER: "Father, I glorify your name. You alone are worthy of my praise. You are the faithful God, keeping your covenant of love to a thousand generations. You are the essence of love. Forgive me for pride and self-centeredness. Lord, help me to be mature enough to apologize when I have offended or hurt someone. Touch the hearts of people that I have hurt knowingly or unintentionally and fill them with peace. Help me to amend any wrongs I have done. I ask for wis- dom and guidance from your Spirit. Let the words of my mouth and the medita- tion of my heart be acceptable in your sight. May I live a life of peace and shine the light of Christ everywhere I go. In Jesus' name - Amen." Establish winter habitats for backyard animals Preparing a property for winter involves putting away lawn furniture, raking leaves and removing any annual plants that have shriveled up and spent the last of their energy. It can be tempting to want to clean up completely and leave a blank slate in the yard. But by doing so, you may be robbing wildlife of the resources they need to overwinter. The nature and conser- vation resource In Habitat says plants and animals depend on one another to survive. During the winter, animals may struggle to fi nd adequate shelter and food, especially when there is a lack of suffi cient plant matter available. In turn, these animals may actually take up home in people's residences, turning into pests in the process. Bats, fi eld mice and even opos- sums and raccoons may move indoors into attics or basements, leaving behind waste and damage if they can't fi nd adequate shelter outdoors. Homeowners concerned about potential pest infesta- tions can take steps to en- sure animals have places to bed down and escape the cold in their yards this winter. These tips can help local wildlife when the tem- peratures dip. • Leave parts of the yard wild. Animals can make a nest in leaves or piles of brushwood. Just make sure piles left out are away from the home so curious crit- ters don't try to get inside. Leave the task of tidying up shrubs and garden borders until spring, as shrubs can be dense areas to hide for both insects and animals. • Consider planting animal food sources prior to winter. Plants like elderberry, holly, mulberry, sumac, and cra- bapple will grow in colder months and animals can enjoy them as a vital food staple. • Don't forget water sources. Provide access to fresh water and replace as needed if the water freezes. For homeowners with fi sh ponds in their backyards, use a hot pot to melt a hole in the top of the pond and allow gases that have ac- cumulated underneath to escape. This allows oxygen to reach fi sh and frogs in the pond. • Leave bird, squirrel or bat houses in the yard. This is a fun and crafty project that can ward off winter bore- dom while also providing a safe place for local wildlife to shelter in winter. Animals and insects need some extra help staying comfortable when cool temperatures arrive. Leav- ing some clean-up tasks for the spring ensures that there are plenty of backyard habitats available to local wildlife. Leave some wild areas of the backyard so animals can roost safely during the winter. Carolina CLASSIFIEDS .com GO TO: www.carolinaclassifi eds.com
