Poplar Street, Petersburg www.UebelhorGM.com Jasper • 1-800-937-8721 CHEVROLET Boys nab Tell City on the road Nipped by Washington 1-0 By James Capozella A very successful road trip win at Tell City this past Mon- day followed a squeaker loss on the home pitch against Washington the previous Wednesday. Charger Varsi- ty soccer head Coach Jacob Western reports, "The first ev- er conference match-up with Washington was an intense battle for 80 minutes." Coach said the Pike Central Chargers' "defense consisting of Chase Ridao, Hunter Cape- hart, Xavier Shoultz, Reese Ashley and Garrett Boyd was a huge part of us holding the Hatchets to one goal. Offen- sively, we had five to eight re- ally good chances that could have resulted in a goal." An- other big part of the defense, according to coach Western, was the 16 saves in goal by Peyton Howald. Against the home-standing Tell City Marksmen, the Pike Central Chargers claimed a 4- 1 Pocket Athletic Conference victory on August 31. Coach Western reported, "It was a slow start, but a good con- ference win at Tell City. Two goals were scored by Connor Young, and Devin Carlisle and Nolan Nelson each had one. Four Chargers had assists, in- cluding Hunter Capehart, Jo- ey Ridao, Devin Carlisle and Reece Ashley. Peyton Howald had six saves in goal." Lady Chargers capture Southridge Invitational By James Capozella Five Lady Chargers fin- ished in the top 13 places at the Southridge Invitational and brought home "the Invi- tational win by a wide mar- gin," according to Pike Cen- tral Cross Country Coach Cain Parker. Quinlan Teague led the way for the girls, with a third-place finish time of 21:56. She was followed by teammate Libby Stone in fifth at 22:03. Anna Whitehead (10th, 22:48), Jenna Meyer (14th, 23:26) and Charlotte Duden- hoeffer (16th, 23:49) com- prised the remainder of the top five Lady Charger finish- ers. Laney Johnson placed 25th in 25:36 and Morgan An- derson was 41st in 31:53. The girls bettered Heritage Hills, Southridge, Barr Reeve, Tell City, Perry Central, Tecum- seh and Springs Valley. The Charger boys took sixth place, with Noah Rus- sel the top Pike Central run- ner, taking 17th with a time of 20 :07. Trent Zimmerman ran 19th, clocking 20 :20, and Jeremy Delobel was right be- hind Zimmerman for 20th in 20 :21. Ethan Gorby was 26th in 21:03, Dallas Reutepohler was 36th (23:02) and Shane Woodhull placed 39th in 23:42 to finish the Charger scoring. Coach Parker said, "The girls' team is good because we have a strong group of up- per classmen. Their grouping in races is tight and that helps us a ton. We were only beat by Jasper so far this year." Lady Patriot Katie Win- kler was the top finisher in the girls' race, clocking 19:50 ahead of Perry Cen- tral's Jaelynn Etienne, with a time of 21:19.9. Patriot Elliott Burchlein won the boys' race in 16:58, but Tell City (38) won with a second-place runner in Kaden Chestnut (2nd, 17:11), plus a fourth, fifth, sixth and 21st runners for the win. Netters travel to four in six days By James Capozella Four road trips in six days included trips to Southridge, North Daviess, Loogootee and Castle for the Pike Cen- tral High School Lady Char- ger volleyball team. NORTH DAVIESS LADY COUGARS On August 25, "The ladies started the match on fire. They passed and hit well. They played as a team (25 - 22). The second set we lost our momentum and gave up too many points in a row (13- 25). The third set (24-26) was close, but we couldn't pull out the win. The last set, we started strong and fizzled toward the middle. We will continue to work on keeping the momentum on our side of the court and keeping the opponent from scoring mul- tiple points in a row. Erika Vinnedge had 14 kills and two blocks. She had a great game and played the net well. Ri- ley Morgan played well in the back row and had six defen- sive digs. Kenzie Powell had 21 assists and Lexi Onyett had 1`8 digs. Lily Willis also had nine digs," said coach Steph- anie Shedd. The junior varsity claimed a 25 -18, 25 -15 two-set win. Coach said, "The JV played awesome. They came out strong and played as a team. They worked hard and are a true team. With the team juggling positions just before game time, Tecumseh found the occasional crack or open- ing on offense and were successful in holding down the Charger offense to just 47 yards on the ground and 29 in the air.
