Stam See VIEWPOINT on 3 There is no book that has influenced America like the Bible. It is loved and read by millions throughout the world. At the same time, it is scoffed at in our education- al institutions. The Bible remains the world's best-sell- ing book. Strangely, it never appears on the best-seller list but no book has sold as many copies. At least 57% of the American people read it daily. The interest in reading the Bi- ble remains as strong as ever. There are more than 450 Bible transla- tions in the English language. Today, there are study Bibles, paraphrases, new transla- tions and formats every few years. The two most popular versions are the New Interna- tional Version and the King James Version. A popular paraphrase, in everyday language, is the Living Bible. One can read through the Bible each year by spending about 20 min- Increasing world tension and the pres- ent trend of events in the Middle East have always filled many with fear, and there are even sincere believers in Christ who fear that perhaps the "Great Tribulation" of prophecy, with all its horrors, is at hand. It is true indeed that even Paul's epistles warn this world of the judgment to come. "… The Day of the Lord", he says, "so cometh as a thief in the night". "For when they shall say, Peace and safe- ty; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape" (IThess.5:2,3). But before this time comes, the Lord will recall His ambassadors, as the apostle tells us in the following passage: "For the Lord Himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God; and the dead in Christ shall rise first: "Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. "Wherefore comfort one another with these words" (IThess.4:16 -18). This is the event with which "the dispen- sation of the grace of God" will be brought to a close. Then will follow "the day of His wrath", but even as Paul goes on to tell about this in the passage which follows, he reas- sures the members of Christ's Body that they will not be included amongst those to Hello readers, hope to find you all healthy and happy as can be. It goes from day to day with the virus because one day you hear we are doing better and the next we are back to sever- al positive cases. I'll be glad when it stops be- ing a threat to all of us. This week's shout- out goes to Terry Bea- dles and if you ask me what his nickname was I would have to say I don't remember him hav- ing one. Terry was Helper Senior which meant he operated the heavy equipment needed to supply our plant with coal and also moving the waste products of making electricity. He was a good operator and always a nice guy to be around. We were using a fire water hose to wash down mill balls down a chute one time and I didn't mean to but I let the hose get out of control and hit Terry square in the chest which knocked him a winding. That was one time I was glad for his mostly gentle nature. Ter- ry became a preacher and we still got to work together as fellow ministers. My thoughts and prayers go up for Terry and his family, may God always bless them. Well it is almost election time and some peo- ple have started getting into the high notes with support for their candidates or I should say for their party. Every year since I have been writ- ing this blog I get on my soap box and try to re- mind people that getting obnoxious and hate- ful isn't the way to gain support for your can- didate or party. It is getting harder and harder to sort out what the individual candidate might do because of the party views everyone wants to allude to. A fter seeing the same advertisement at least a hundred times you start memorizing them. Each ad seems to only try and bash the char- acter of their opponent and very little about the issues which are truly facing America. It amazes me how thick a candidate's skin must be as they do battle and hear all the bad mouthing. How I would love to hear a candidate say what they would like to accomplish and this is where my support will go and a whole lot less of calling someone names and acting childish. "I waited patiently on the Lord, he turned to me and heard my cry" (Psalm 40 :1, NIV ). When we are separated, bowed low and desperate, he hears our cry. When we are forgotten and despair- ing, he comforts our loneli- ness. And when, because of our own sin, we are wicked and depraved, he cleanses us of our offensiveness and makes us suitable for glory. "Thank you Lord for hear- ing our cries and coming to our rescue. You deliver us. You keep us steady and safe. Let our hearts be thankful and full of praise"—Amen. Remember those on our prayer list. We know God hears and answers our prayers. "The Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groan- ings which cannot be uttered" (Romans 8:26). Have you ever faced a situ- ation that was so overwhelm- ing or so confusing you didn't even know how to pray about it? Have you ever been so over- come with grief or burdened by heartache you couldn't put your emotions into words, much less pray about them? What a comfort these words should be: "The Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray, but the Spirit Himself inter- ceded for us in accordance with God's will" (Romans 8:26 -27). Think of it: Even when we don't know how to pray, the Spirit knows our needs, and He brings the deepest cries of our hearts before the throne of God. In ways we will never un- derstand this side of eternity, God the Holy Spirit pleads for us before God the Father. Turn to God in every situation even when you don't feel like it. The Spirit is interceding for you, in accordance with God's will. If at any time you have no church to attend, your pres- ence will be greatly appreciat- WINSLOW G.B. CHURCH 600 E.
