Like's 24th year at East Gibson By Kenzie Rudolph Julie Like, the music teacher for Oakland City Elementary, Barton Town- ship and Francisco Elemen- tary schools, has just start- ed her 24th year at East Gib- son. Like is from Pike Coun- ty, and started teaching in 1994. She knew from a young age, four years old, that she would become a music teach- er, and she never wavered. "I would come home from church, we had a little chord organ, one of those tiny little old things, and I would start picking out melodies of the songs we sang at church, and they were like 'doggone, she's only four years old, we need to get her into piano les- sons,' so they bought me a pi- ano and I have been playing ever since," said Like. She got her bachelor's degree from University of Evansville and her master's from Indiana State. Like, who grew up in Pe- tersburg, says that she found her home at Oakland City El- ementary, and that she has never wanted to teach any- where else. Like's first job was at Oakland City Elementary in 1994, after a year of sub- stitute teaching right out of college, and she thinks that former principal, Mr. Cham- ness, hired her because he liked Bluegrass music, and she was in a band with Tony Rothrock for four years. Things have changed over the past 24 years, like her room location, but Like still teaches the same. "I kept the basic main things that I think the kids really need," Like said. When it comes to positives and negatives of her job, Like cannot find anything that she does not like about teaching music. Like said, "Well, I like that, based on research studies, music really helps kids...there was a research study done a long time ago by Phyllis Wiekart based on a bunch of football players in high school and the ones that had a really good elementa- ry music background, like with a really good teacher, they played better than the ones that had not. And a lot of it was based on movement and steady beat activities. That's one thing that I real- ly pull from that. I do a lot of that. I think that the kids re- ally benefit from that." The younger kids are learning steady beats, sec- ond and third are learning songs of America, third grad- ers are also learning notes of the treble clef, fourth and fifth are learning their in- struments and sixth grade is learning about the elements of music. According to Like, she does not have a favorite age group to teach. "I get to do different things with different grade levels, like fifth grade plays guitars, fourth grade plays recorders, you know it's something dif- ferent with each grade level, so I enjoy each grade level for what it is," added Like. Her favorite part is, "The kids' enthusiasm for music...I would say almost 95 percent of them really love coming to music class," Like said.
