Ed Cahill photo Lady Charger netters go 3-0 in round robin at Eastern Greene The Pike Central High School volleyball team won all three of its matches to place first in a four-team round rob- in hosted by Eastern Greene on Saturday, Sept. 15. The Lady Chargers – who improved to 10 -12 – defeat- ed South Knox 25 -17, 25 -16, Washington 28 -30, 25 -21, 15 - 9, and Eastern Greene 25 -23, 25 -17. "I am extremely happy with the level of play, inten- sity and determination the girls brought to the court to- day, whether they started the set or subbed in," Pike Cen- tral head coach Brandi Chest- nut said. "Everyone contribut- ed to the wins today." SOUTH KNOX: Junior Au- drey Keepes scored a team- high eight points – on four ace serves, three kills and one block – and had a team- high eight digs while senior Becca Crow added six points – on two ace serves and four kills – and a team-high eight set-assists. Senior Kylie Dawson had two ace serves and two kills while junior Karsyn Pipes had two kills. Pipes also had six digs while Kylie Dawson and junior Aubrie Dawson had five and four digs, respectively. In the first set, Pike Cen- tral, trailing 4-1, scored four straight points – including three following serves by se- nior Kenzie Dunn – to take a 5 -4 lead. A fter South Knox rallied to take a 14-12 lead, the Lady Chargers scored seven of the next eight points – including four following serves by Dunn – to surge ahead 19 -15. The Lady Spartans scored back-to-back points to close to within 19 -17 before Pike Cen- tral ran off six unanswered points – including five follow- ing serves by Crow – to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three match. In the second set, with the score tied at 10 -10, the Lady Chargers tallied nine straight points – including eight fol- lowing serves by Keepes – to take a commanding 19 -10 lead. South Knox could get no closer than seven points the rest of the match. WASHINGTON: Crow scored a team-high nine points – on eight kills and one ace serve – while Keepes (one ace serve, six kills) and Tay- lor Lamey (three ace serves, four kills and one block) add- ed seven points each to lead the Lady Chargers to a three- set win over Washington. Crow also led Pike Central with nine set-assists and 10 digs. Keepes and Kylie Daw- son had eight digs each. Se- nior Alyssa Jenkins had two blocks and one block-assist. In the first set, the La- dy Hatchets built up an 18 - 12 lead before Pike Cen- tral scored 12 of the next 17 points – including four follow- ing serves by Taylor Lamey – to take a 24-23 lead. Neither team could open up more than a one-point lead the rest of the set before Washing- ton – trailing 28 -27 – scored three straight points to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three match. In the second set, leading 8 -6, the Lady Chargers scored eight of the next 11 points – in- cluding two following serves by Pipes and two following serves by Lamey – to open up a 16 -9 lead. The Lady Hatchets could get no closer than three points the rest of the game. Trailing 9 -6 in the third set, Pike Central scored nine straight points – includ- ing eight following serves by Keepes – to finish off the match. EASTERN GREENE: Taylor Lamey scored a team- high six points on three ace serves and three kills while Kylie Dawson and Keepes added four kills each. Keep- es also had a team-high 12 digs while Kylie Dawson had eight. Kaila Lamey had six digs while Crow and Dunn had five each. Jenkins also had one block. Pike Central jumped out to a 9 -0 lead in the first set – scoring eight points following serves by Taylor Lamey – but the Lady Thunderbirds would rally, scoring 14 of the next 16 points to take a 14-11 lead. A fter the Lady Chargers scored five of the next six points to reclaim the lead at 16 -15, Eastern Greene an- swered with a 5 -1 scoring run of its own to surge ahead 20 -17. Following an exchange of points, Pike Central scored three straight points – includ- ing two following serves by ju- nior Alexis Englert – to pull even at 21-21. Trailing 23-22, the La- dy Chargers scored three straight points – including two following serves by Keep- es – to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three match. Pike Central trailed just once in the second set – at 4- 3 – and led by as many as 10 points enroute to the straight- set victory. The Lady Chargers, who hosted Vincennes Rivet on Tuesday, Sept. 18, will host South Spencer on Thursday, Sept. 20, before traveling to Tell City on Tuesday, Sept. 25. Pike Central will host Tecum- seh on Thursday, Sept. 27. PCMS 7th grade volleyball team splits with Barr-Reeve, Tecumseh The Pike Central Middle School seventh grade vol- leyball team defeated vis- iting Barr-Reeve 25 -16, 25 - 22 on Monday, Sept. 10, and dropped a 25 -15, 25 -9 loss at Tecumseh on Tuesday, Sept. 11. BARR-REEVE: Karley Kavanaugh (two ace serves and four kills) and Addy Russell (three ace serves and three kills) scored a team-high six points as the Lady Chargers improved to 5 -1 with their fifth straight victory. Lexie Onyett netted five points with two ace serves and three kills while El- la Adams (three kills) and Haylie Fulcher (two ace serves and one kill) added three each. Brailey Mills scored two points, both on kills. Kavanaugh also led Pike Central in set-assists with five. With the score tied 9 -9 in the first set, the Lady Char- gers scored five straight points – including four fol- lowing serves by Onyett – to take a 14-9 lead. Barr- Reeve would pull to with- in 14-12 before Pike Cen- tral rolled off another five points – including four fol- lowing serves by Russell – to extend its lead to 19 -12. The Lady Vikings would get no closer than six points the rest of the set. In the second set, with the score tied at 15 -15, Pike Central scored four straight points – including three fol- lowing serves by Fulcher – to open up a 19 -15 lead. Barr-Reeve would close to within one points twice – at 21-20 and 22-21 – before the Lady Chargers scored three of the final four points to cap the win. "The team played an over- all awesome game against Barr-Reeve," Pike Central head coach Kinsey Bar- rett said. "Our passing was some of the best I've seen from the girls all season and we had 16 kills as a team. Our net play continues to improve with each game. Barr-Reeve has a really great volleyball program and I am really proud of my team for this win." TECUMSEH: Ad- ams and Kavanaugh each had two kills as the Lady Chargers fell to 5 -2 with a straight-set loss at Tecum- seh. In the first set, with the score tied 11-11, Tecumseh scored 13 straight points to open up an insurmountable 24-11 lead. Then, in the second set, with Pike Central lead- ing 4-3, the Lady Braves rattled off 11 consecutive points to take a 14-4 advan- tage. A fter the Lady Char- gers scored back-to-back points to close to within 14- 6, Tecumseh scored 11 of the next 14 points to close out the match. "We had a slow start and once we got behind, we weren't able to pull it back together to get the win," Barrett said. "They were easily the toughest team we've seen so far." Pike Central, which host- ed Wood Memorial on Mon- day, Sept. 17, will host Princ- eton on Monday, Sept. 24, before traveling to Haub- stadt on Thursday, Sept. 27. Sophomore Reaghan Page (three ace serves and seven kills), junior Mallory Smith (three ace serves, six kills and one block) and junior Emma Sartore (nine kills and one block) each scored a team-high 10 points to lead Princeton to a 25 -17, 25 -14, 25 -22 victory over host Pike Central in high school varsi- ty volleyball action on Tues- day, Sept. 11. Senior Emma Ault added eight points – all on kills – as the Lady Tigers improved to 7-7. Pike Central, which slipped to 7-12, was led by senior Aubrie Dawson, who had six kills. Junior Audrey Keepes had four kills while seniors Becca Crow and Al- yssa Jenkins added three kills each. Senior Taylor Lamey and junior Emma Russell both had one ace serve. Crow, who had a team-high nine set-assists, and Aubrie Daw- son had 14 digs each. Soph- omore Kaila Lamey had 12 digs while senior Kylie Daw- son and junior Alexis En- glert had nine and eight, re- spectively. In the junior varsity con- test, Pike Central dropped a 23-25, 25 -16, 16 -14 loss to Princeton. Sophomore Kenzie Powell had a team- high eight kills for the La- dy Chargers while sopho- more Neeley Correll add- ed four. Freshman Madi- son Riley dished out three ace serves while sopho- more Addie Johnson had 18 digs. Powell also added 11 digs while sophomores Ri- ley Morgan and Lily Willis both had nine digs.
