B-4 Sports Wednesday, September 19, 2018 The Press-Dispatch PCHS boys' tennis team gets 3-2 win over Tell City The Pike Central High School boys' tennis team picked up its second victory of the season with a 3-2 win over visiting Tell City on Sat- urday, Sept. 15. At No. 1 singles, Chargers sophomore Ethan Huck lost to Marksmen junior Neal Hollinden 6 -1, 6 -2. At No. 2 singles, Char- gers junior Dalton Williams defeated Marksmen soph- omore Cameron Young 6 - 4, 7-6. At No. 3 singles, Marks- men sophomore Isaiah Von- derhide won by forfeit. At No. 1 doubles, the Char- gers' team of senior Kyle Williams and junior Quinton Sorgius defeated Marksmen sophomores Anthony Koch and Zach Goffinet 6 -0, 6 -0. With the win, Williams and Sorgius improved to 8 -3 overall and 5 -1 against Pock- et Athletic Conference foes. "They've had a really nice season so far," Pike Central head coach Brent Beck said. "They've competed night in and night out and have been the least of my worries on match night. This is their third season of playing dou- bles together and it is cer- tainly nice to see them hav- ing the success that they've had so far." GAME OF SEPTEMBER 22 Area Game Perry Central at Eastern Greene tral began the second half with an 12-play, 63-yard drive which culminated in a one-yard touchdown run by Fields. Rice's point-after kick was good, cutting the Rangers' lead to 35 -10 with 7:27 left in the third period. A fter Forest Park ex- tended its lead to 41-10, the Chargers would piece together an eight-play, 69 -yard drive that result- ed in a 16 -yard touchdown pass from Fields to se- nior wide receiver Judah Leathco with 8:31 left in the game. Rice's point-af- ter kick was good to finish off the game's scoring. Fields led Pike Central offensively, rushing 19 times for 85 yards and one touchdown while complet- ing 11 of 18 pass attempts for 93 yards and one touch- down with two intercep- tions. Leathco and O'Neal both had five receptions, for 53 and 38 yards, respectively. Senior wide receiver Ran- dy Powell caught one pass for a two-yard gain. "We have seen for a while in practice that we have do- ne some good things," Ste- phens said. "There are things that are schemat- ically there, that we've been executing offensive- ly in practice. I kind of felt like it was just going to be a matter of time." "Our offense needed to have some big plays through the air," Stephens added. "I think our offen- sive coordinator needed to see that. I think it made ev- erybody feel better. I think that's only going to bode well for us, if we can pass the ball. It'll open up our run game, too. Some teams are just ging to flat out say, 'Hey, beat us with the pass if you can.' But other teams will respect it more and they'll give us more run- ning opportunities." Junior running back Drew Day led Forest Park with 128 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries, while senior running back Gavin Pierce had 81 yards and two touchdowns on eight carries. Sophomore running back Jake Begle, meanwhile, rushed for 77 yards and one touchdown on six carries. Junior quarterback Gar- ret Berg completed one pass in as many attempts – a 40 -yard touchdown pass to junior wide receiver Jar- ed Schipp. Pike Central returns to action on Friday, Sept. 21, when the Chargers will travel to South Spencer. The Rebels are currently 0 -5 overall and 0 -4 in PAC play. "I think that's going to be more up our alley," Ste- phens said. "We spent all summer defending our spread offense with our de- fense, and they are definite- ly going to throw the ball. They've got some kids that can run and they've got a quarterback that doesn't mind throwing the ball down the field." "So what we have to do is our (defensive) linemen are going to have to win the battle, four-on-five, cre- ate some pressure on that quarterback, because it's going to take our lineback- ers and our safeties and our cornerbacks to really defend the pass." South Spencer, Stephens noted, was not without its own issues under first-year head coach John Edge. "I think that they have some struggles on their offensive line," Stephens said. "I think there are some opportunities there. Defensively, I think there are some things that we can take advantage of." "It's one of those games that I think we can be com- petitive in," Stephens add- ed. "The decision we have to make this week is, are we going to have the game dictated to us, or are we going to try to dictate the terms of the game to them, both from a physicality standpoint and from an ex- ecution standpoint? " Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m., Eastern time. PCMS 7th grade football team shuts out Heritage Hills, 24-0 The Pike Central Middle School seventh grade foot- ball team won its first game of the season with a 24-0 victory over host Heritage Hills on Thursday, Sept. 13. "It was a huge win for us and builds some confi- dence in what we are do- ing," Chargers head coach Jeremy Howald said. "We had a lot of things go our way tonight. We made de- fensive adjustments all night and, for the most part, performed them flawlessly. Offensively, we were able to move the ball through the air as well as on the ground. Coach ( Jorden) Froderman had a really sound offensive game plan for this game." The entire seventh grade football team – which im- proved to 1-2 – "played out- standing," according to Jer- emy Howald. "Arri McDonald had an outstanding night all over the football field," Jeremy Howald said. "He set the tone on the opening kick- off by not only kicking off, but hustling down the field to absolutely crush the re- turn man. It was outstand- ing." "Skylar Shelton was al- so very impressive on de- fense, making several tack- les for loss against the Pa- triots," he added. "Jayden Clark got his first sack of the year at a crucial time in the game." In the eighth grade con- test, the Chargers fell to 0 - 4 with a 32-0 loss to Heri- tage Hills after trailing just 8 -0 at halftime. "Not as impressive, but I have to say we played the best defense I have ever seen this group play in the first half," Jeremy Howald said. "I have to take some of the blame in giving up that score as I called and kept our guys in the wrong de- fense for the offensive set that the Heritage Hills play- ers were in." Isaac Marchino, Jeremy Howald noted, had an "out- standing defensive show- ing." "Offensively, we made some plays, but couldn't sustain a drive to the end zone all night due to the fact that we kept shoot - ing ourselves in the foot," he added. "Kendric Sorgi- us made some good pass- es in this game, and our receivers Cole Parks, Bra- den Howald, Peyton How- ald and Chance Wolfe had some nice gains but, then again, we dropped some passes that should have been caught at crit - ical times in the game. It was really hard for us to do much in the ground game due to the way Heritage Hills chose to defend us but Jagar Dent did rip off a few good runs." Pike Central will travel to North Posey on Thursday, Sept. 20, before returning home to host Southridge on Thursday, Sept. 27. "Both of our teams are improving each week, and we, as a coaching staff, are thrilled about that," Jeremy Howald said.
