B-6 Sports Wednesday, September 19, 2018 The Press-Dispatch PCMS 8th grade volleyball team falls to Barr-Reeve, Tecumseh The Pike Central Middle School eighth grade volleyball team slipped to 3-4 with a 25 -8, 25 -6 loss to visiting Barr-Reeve on Monday, Sept. 10, and a 25 -13, 25 -23 loss at Tecumseh on Tues- day, Sept. 11. BARR-REEVE: In the first set, the Lady Vikings jumped out to a 3-0 lead and scored 19 of the first 27 points before finishing Pike Central off by scoring the last six points. In the second set, Barr-Reeve scored six of the first seven points while cruising to the two-set vic- tory. "This is one of the most aggres- sive teams the girls have seen all year, hands down, and the girls struggled adjusting to that," Pike Central head coach Olivia Leighty said. "We got down mentally and played timid." TECUMSEH: Delaney Welch led the Lady Chargers with 10 points off serve – including one on an ace serve – while Ashlyn Shoul- tz added five points off serve. In the first set, Pike Central scored seven of the first 10 points – including three following serves by Welch and two following serves by Shoultz – to take a 7-3 lead be- fore Tecumseh rallied, scoring seven of the next eight points to surge ahead 10 -8. A fter the Lady Chargers re- bounded to tie the score at 10 -10, Tecumseh went on a 6 -1 run to open up a 16 -11 lead. Then, lead- ing 16 -13, the Lady Braves rolled off nine straight points to take a 1- 0 lead in the best-of-three match. In the second set, Pike Central rallied from a five-point deficit to take a 19 -17 lead before Tecum- seh scored three straight points to surge ahead 20 -19. Following ties at 20 -20, 21-21 and 22-22, the La- dy Braves scored three of the next four points to take the straight-set victory. "Tecumseh is just as good as Barr-Reeve, who we saw earlier this week," Leighty said. "On pa- per, the girls lost, but on the court, it was a win in my book. The girls played together as a team and played the most aggressive game I've seen them play all year. I'm proud of each and every one of them and am excited to continue to learn and grow as we are near- ing PACs." Pike Central, which hosted Wood Memorial on Monday, Sept. 17, will host Princeton on Monday, Sept. 24, before traveling to Haub- stadt on Thursday, Sept. 27. Junior Hadley Holder shot a 102, junior Madison Warner shot a 106, junior Emma Rainey shot a 111 and freshman Carissa Moudy shot a 123 as Pike Central regis- tered a team score of 393. "I kind of knew going into it that I had a pretty good shot of advanc- ing out of it – I've had several peo- ple help me along the way that re- ally helped my game come togeth- er – but our goal as a team was to get out," Bohnert said. "It's a lot more fun to get out as a team rath- er than just individually." Vincennes Lincoln and Vin- cennes Rivet tied for first place with identical team scores of 385. North Daviess (403 points) was fourth, followed by Washington (420), North Knox (422), Prince- ton (436), South Knox (452), Lin- ton-Stockton (485) and Sullivan (494). Barr-Reeve also participat- ed but did not have enough golfers to qualify for a team score. "I am very proud of the whole team," Gideon said. "I certain- ly would not have predicted the success we have had this season during our first meetings together this summer. The girls have real- ly dedicated themselves to improv- ing and becoming better golfers, and the payoff for that hard work was Saturday's results." "I kind of had to tell the girls, 'Hey, this is a really big deal, ad- vancing to regional,'" Gideon add- ed. "I don't think some of the girls really grasped what they had ac- complished because it was their first experience with that kind of tournament golf. I told them Satur- day night that though they didn't realize it right now, that they have accomplished something that they can be proud of for the rest of their lives." Advancing as individuals to the regional tournament were Katie Kixmiller, of North Knox, who placed third with a 79; Lib- by Knepp, of North Daviess, who placed fourth with an 88; and Ha- ley York, of Princeton, who placed fifth with a 91. The regional tournament will be held on Saturday, Sept. 22, at the Country Oaks Golf Club. It is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. "I'm going to focus more on each hole that I play rather than my score overall," Bohnert said. "And just play the best that I can play." "Tonight's race was a lit- tle different," Roach add- ed. "We had a focus on mov- ing up spots in the middle of the race. The girls were challenged to surge in cer- tain places that they weren't used to using that extra en- ergy. We know that, at the end of the year, the capabili- ty to be able to do this in the middle of the race will push us farther through the post- season races." "The boys had a similar mindset but with a little dif- ferent challenge," Roach said. "We pushed them to give a long surge into the last third of the race and focus on catching as many people as they could. Our second bunch moved up to- night a little, but we know we have to keep getting them closer to our first bunch."
