VFW New Year's Party to benefit Fisher House By James Capozella The Petersburg VFW is offering a New Year's Eve of merry making and entertainment that will benefit the Fisher House Foundation. This much needed program provides a place where the family of a hospitalized service member can reside near where the treatment is taking place. Veterans and family members that utilize the housing, which is located at or near military reservations or VA medical centers, is free of all costs including food. Tickets for the 8 p.m. VFW dance and evening of karaoke are $3 for singles and $5 for couples according to VFW Post 3587 Commander Jamie English. The Fisher House Program began in 1982 when Zachar y and Elizabeth Fisher, life-long supporters of the troops, founded the Zachary and Elizabeth M. Fisher Armed Services Foundation. A monetary donation to the foundation is just one way to show support for our military and their families during a critical time of need such as injury or illness. Volunteers also play an important role in the day-to-day functions of each foundation home. Baby sitting needs, housekeeping, food delivery and associated costs and equipment are items provided by donations and volunteers. More than 142,000 families have benefited from the foundation's services, saving veteran families millions of dollars in lodging, food, transportation and other related expenses. Over 96 percent of donated funds are used for programs; 2 percent for administration and 2 percent for fund raising. Fisher House locations and descriptions can be found at the foundation web site, www.fisherhouse.org. Each home ranges from 5,000 to 16,000 square feet containing 8 to 21 suites. Most of the homes are within walking distance and for those that aren't, the transportation is provided. In addition to bedrooms, bathrooms and laundry facilities, each house has a well stocked kitchen and a living room with library and toy area. Each has a manager plus volunteers available to help and assist military families.
