Wednesday, December 12, 2012 C-1 Church notes   Opinion    Letters to the editor    Files OUT of the past Churches to have Christmas programs Brenton Chapel Church of Christ 1194 E. Co. Rd. 400 N. Prides Creek Road, Petersburg Sunday morning Bible classes 10; worship 10:30; evening worship 6; Wednesday evening Bible study 7. George Fiscus, Minister ABUNDANT LIFE PENTECOSTAL CHURCH 409 S. 4th St., Petersburg Sunday services 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.; Thursday 7 p.m., casual Bible study groups last Thursday of month at 7 p.m. What do you have? Against a towering giant, a pebble from a brook seems futile. But God used it to topple Goliath. Compared to the tithes of the wealthy, a widow's coins seem puny. But Jesus used them to inspire us. Moses had a staff. David had a sling. Samson had a jawbone. Rahab had a string. Mary had some ointment. Dorcas had a needle. All were used by God. What do you have? For questions or more information call 766-3474. Troy Johnson, Pastor Ron Ficklin, Reporter First United Methodist Church 801 E. Walnut St. Petersburg Sunday morning worship 9:30; fellowship 10:25– 10:40; Sunday school 10:40– 11:30; Wednesday choir practice 7:30. Learn and Grow Day Care Christmas Program will be Thursday, Dec. 13, 6:30 p.m. "But we all...are changed... by the Spirit of the Lord" (2 Corinthians 3:18). Prayer is the great change agent, not pressure. If we truly love people, we'll pray for them and allow God to work on them His way, on His schedule and for His glory. Many of those who irritate us are simply being themselves; their personality just doesn't mesh with ours. Sometimes we want them to change when we need to change. Often the things we require in other people are already available for us to enjoy if we'll just stop judging them. For change to be lasting, it must come from the inside out. And only the Spirit of God can bring that kind of change (Taken in part from "The Word For You Today"). See you in church next Sunday. Mel Camp, Pastor Good Shepherd United Methodist Church 210 W. Harrison Street, Oakland City Sunday school 9:30; worship service 10:30; youth group meetings the last Sunday of each month 6-7 p.m.; community luncheons the third Tuesday of each month 11 a.m.-1 p.m. The community of Good Shepherd United Methodist Church exists to glorify God through Jesus Christ our Lord. As a body of believers, we pledge ourselves to allow the Holy Spirit to develop within us maturity of spirit, unity of faith, and knowledge of the Son of God, so that we may be prepared to share His love, mercy and grace through our words and actions, to a needy world. We extend an invitation to the public to come and worship with us. The Good Shepherd takes care of His sheep. Douglas Low, Minister River Of Life Fellowship 342 E. CR 300 N. Last week's Trivia question: As a wallbreaker Christ serves as our what? Answer: Peace—Ephesians 2:14. Next week's question: Paul encourages us in Ephesians to maintain the what of the Spirit? Mini message: Living in Christ The Book of Ephesians teaches us this concept throughout its chapters. Being "in Christ" means that our existence is only possible through our risen Saviour. We believe that Jesus is alive and continues to live through us. We have been given a guaranteed promise into the family of God with the acceptance of this knowledge. Believing this means our living Lord is with us. He shares our lives through good times and bad. We are never alone. We grow in Christ as we practice, resting in his promises of love and care. Until next week—Remain in Christ. Fred Faith, Deacon Kathy Miller, Reporter Otwell Contenders of Faith Sunday school 9:30; worship 10:30; evening worship 7; Wednesday prayer and Bible study meeting 7. On Sunday, Dec. 16, Rev. and Mrs. Andrew Street, a missionary family will be with us in the morning worship service at 10:30. They will be here promoting the country of India. William Breidenbaugh, Pastor Religious viewpoint Paul's claims By Pastor Cornelius R. Stam Paul's Spirit-inspired claims for the distinctive character of his apostleship leave no room for doubt. Consider a sampling of these. Romans 11:13: "For I speak to you Gentiles, inasmuch as I am the Apostle of the Gentiles: I magnify mine office". Galatians 1:11,12: "But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man. "For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ." Ephesians 3:1-3: "For this cause, I Paul, the prisoner of Jesus Christ for you Gentiles, "If ye have heard of the dispensation of the grace of god, which is given me to you-ward: "How that by revelation he made known unto me the mys- tery…." Colossians 1:25: "…I am made a minister, according to the dispensation of god which is given to me for you, to fulfill [fill full, or complete] the Word of God". I Timothy 2:5-7: "For there is one God, and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus; "Who gave Himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time. "Whereunto I am ordained a preach-er, and an apostle (I speak the truth in Christ, and lie not); a teacher of the gentiles in faith and verity." Titus 1:2,3: "In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie; promised before the world began; "But hath in due times manifested His Word through preaching which is committed unto me, according to the commandment of God our Saviour." By Clyde Dupin "Religion in a changing culture" Sadly, most Christians are not talking about the cultural crisis America is facing. The demise of the Christian family is the source of the majority of changing values in our 21st Century culture. I watched in horror and shame the deafening roar at the Democratic Convention in Charlotte as they left out any mention of God's name when the delegates voted. I find it difficult to believe, in America, that samesex marriage was approved, along with abortion at the same convention. In many trips to Russia, older people often told me our sorrows and troubles started when we forgot God. The Bible tells us the people of Jeremiah's day were taken into Babylonian captivity because they had forgotten God. Today many Christians believe America may be facing God's judgment. The only way to change a bad culture is through Jesus Christ and His power to change lives. Everyone knows our government has become corrupt. Our educational institutions have been so infiltrated by anti-God books and teaching that brainwashes our children to be secular. In our universities 80 percent of all professors are secular and teach a less American form of modernism and socialism. Sadly, our churches have been influenced by our secular culture. Many pastors openly question the Bible and believe in universalism. The churches feel the heavy hand of the evil culture. The average church member Continued on page 4 Petersburg Holiness Church 5317 N.
