Sales School board votes to borrow $4 million to cover two budgets By Mike Johansen At its monthly meeting Monday night, the Pike County School Corporation Board of Education took the final steps needed to borrow $4 million to fund two sections of its budget until property tax funds come in for the current year. They also said goodbye to Debbie Lemond and Ryan Edrington. The Pike County School Corporation had advertised for bids to cover $4 million in loans to fund its budgeted amounts for the Transportation Fund and Capital Projects Fund for the current budget year. The $4 million will be borrowed until tax funds are received from the United Way of Pike County presents scholarships United Way of Pike County and Pike County Community Foundation distributed scholarships, that were provided by Indiana Youth Institute, to Pike County youth workers to attend this year's IYI Conference. These scholarships paid the conference fee to attend the "2012 Because Kids Count Conference" in Indianapolis which was held on December 4 and 5. Shawn Bruner and Arlene Petty were the recipients of these scholarships and attended the conference. This was an opportunity for valuable professional development experiences and great resources. county for taxes that are taken in during November and May. They did the same thing last year and must cover about $60,000 in interest payments of the loans, depending on how long they have the borrowed money until the funds are paid back. The main use for most of those funds will be for the transportation budget to fund operation of the school buses for transporting students to and from school and to activities. The other portion is to fund the capital projects budget, which includes some equipment purchases, any building or refurbishing of buildings or other capital needs. The funds will be paid back when tax funds come in during the coming few months. The low bid was from Home Savings Bank at 2.10 percent. The German American bid was at 2.125 percent. The board approved the Home Savings bid in one motion and approved the additional appropriation resolution and having Treasurer Krista Halbrader sign for the loans. This is not for the general fund budget as those funds come from the state. The School Board also heard the first reading of the school policy regarding acceptable use policy covering internet and cell phone usage by employees as well as a few other things. The changes to the policy update the forbidden uses including inappropriate internet usage and the use of cell phones during school. Superintendent Suzanne Blake said she wished to thank Debbie Lemond and Ryan Edrington for their service on the school board and wished them well in the future. She also welcomed Nathan Harker and Chris McKinney who will join the board officially in January.
