The Press-Dispatch Wednesday, December 12, 2012 A-7 Pike County anticipates to receive federal funds Pike County anticipates to receive an estimated amount of $2,800 under Phase 30 funding to supplement emergency food and shelter programs in the county. In anticipation of receiving this award, the Local Board will be accepting applications for funding. The selection was made by a National Board that is chaired by the U. S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency and consists of representatives from American Red Cross; Catholic Charities, USA; National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA; The Jewish Federations of North America, The Salvation Army; and United Way Worldwide. The local board was charged to distribute funds appropriated by Congress to help expand the capacity of food and shelter programs in high-need areas around the country. A local board made up of representatives from the Pike Co. Commissioners office, American Red Cross, Ministerial Association, Salvation Army, United Way, Catholic Organizations, TRI-CAP and the homeless will determine how the funds awarded to Pike Co. are to be distributed among the emergency food and shelter programs run by local service agen- cies in the area. The Local Board is responsible for recommending agencies to receive these funds and any additional funds made available under this phase of the program. Under the terms of the grant from the National Board, local agencies chosen to receive funds must: 1) be private voluntary non-profits or units of government, 2) be eligible to receive Federal funds, 3) have an accounting system, 4) practice nondiscrimination, 5) have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs, and 6) if they are a private voluntary organization, have a voluntary board. Qualif ying agencies are urged to apply. Pike Co. has distributed Emergency Food and Shelter funds previously with TRI-CAP, Pike Co. Christian Assistance, The Salvation Army and Generations participating. These agencies were responsible for providing meals, shelter and helping with utility bills and rent payments. Public or private voluntary agencies interested in applying for Emergency Food and Shelter program funds must call Jessica Mehringer at 812-482-2233 x145 or email her at Jessica@tricap.net to get an application for funds. Applications must be received by 4:30 EST on Dec. 21. Girl Scouts camping trip The Girl Scouts from Winslow 296 and 211 recently had a scavenger hunt and campout. Winslow man arrested on charge of drunken driving By Andy Heuring A rural Winslow man was arrested on a charge of drunken driving after police stopped him for speeding. Gary T. Jochim, 54, of 7935 E. SR56, Winslow, was arrested by Pike County Deputy Sheriff Dallas Killian on Highway 56 near the Winslow-Cato Road at about 5 p.m. on Monday, December 5. Deputy Killian said he received a report of a possible intoxicated motorcyclist and saw a motorcycle going 75 mph in a 55 zone on Highway 56. He stopped the bike and talked with Jochim, who initially denied drinking, but later said he had two beers in Evansville. Killian said Jochim failed field sobriety tests and was taken to the Pike County Jail, where he tested 0.16 percent or twice the legal limit for blood alcohol content in Indiana. He was charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated. Bread of Life Ministries to have yard sale Bread of Life Ministries in Lynnville is having a yard sale on Saturday at the intersection of Highways 68 and 61. Founder Bill Carlisle said the organization supplies food for numerous other charitable organizations including Somebody's Place in Petersburg. Carlisle said Bread of Life Ministries is falling behind the demand as donations are down and demand for food is up. Along with the tough economy creating more need, Hurricane Sandy caused many of the groups he normally gets supplies from to be directed to Sandy victims. "I'm not a giver-upper. It has been tough, but we will keep on going. We have to," said Carlisle. People can donate by calling 812-922-5424 or sending it to Bread of Life Ministry Inc. at 13188 Spurgeon Road.
