The Press-Dispatch Sports Wednesday, Februar y 21, 2018 B- 3 letic Conference. "It's an 18 -point win over a team that beat Heritage Hills." "It's one of those things where we dropped a couple last weekend, and bounc- ing back tonight with an- other team that's on top of the conference was a tough task," Elliott added. "I thought we stepped up to the plate and played well to- night." With the score tied at 13- 13 with 5:43 left in the sec- ond quarter, Booker (12 points) and Henson (sev- en points) combined for 19 points as Pike Central out- scored the Titans 25 -5 to take a 38 -18 lead with 7:02 remaining in the fourth pe- riod. During that stretch, the Chargers – who had made just five of their first 15 field goal attempts, includ- ing two of seven tries from beyond the three-point arc, while missing three of four free throws – were 10 -for-18 from the field, including 3-for-7 from three-point range, and 2-for-2 from the charity stripe. Gibson Southern, mean- while, made just two of 13 field goal attempts and was 1-for-2 from the free throw line after hitting six of its first field goal attempts, in- cluding one of four from be- yond the three-point arc. The Titans would close to within 14 points on three occasions – at 40 -26, 48 -34 and 50 -36 – before two free throws by Nalley and two more by Booker extended Pike Central's lead to 54-36 with 48.8 seconds remain- ing in the fourth quarter. Nalley added 12 points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds for the Char- gers while dishing out a game-high five assists. He also led both teams in steal with three. Henson, who blocked two shots, and senior Ty- ler Tormohlen had five re- bounds each while Booker grabbed three as Pike Cen- tral out-rebounded Gibson Southern 27-16. "That was one of our key points," Elliott said. "I've told them when we win the rebound battle, we win the game. That's true of any team, and tonight I thought Cameron, Bryant, Booker, really, everybody made a concerted effort to make sure that we got every sin- gle rebound. We were get- ting the offensive rebounds, we were cleaning the defen- sive glass, and that's just huge for us." For the game, the Titans had only two offensive re- bounds. "That's huge for us, making sure we're tak- ing care of the basketball and cleaning the glass," said Elliott, whose team committed just five turn - overs, three of which oc- curred in the fourth quar- ter. "That's what I keep tell- ing them we've got to finish each possession with the re- bound because, defensively, I think all year we've shown at times that we can be real- ly, really good, but we don't always finish with the re- bound." "Tonight, we finished it with the rebound and, of- fensively, we took care of the basketball, and that's huge – that's huge to come out and get the win," Elliott added. Elliott said that he was pleased to see Henson – who made seven of 10 field goal attempts, including three of five tries from be- yond the three-point line – have a big night. "Cameron Henson, I thought, we huge for us to- night," Elliott said. "Him playing with confidence and aggressiveness is what we have to have, and he was shooting the ball with con- fidence, we was aggressive towards the basket, and he was rebounding the heck out of the basketball, and that's what we need from him." For the game, the Char- gers made 19 of 39 field goal attempts – a 48.7 percent av- erage – and hit 11 of 17 tries from the free throw line. Three of Pike Central's misses from the chari- ty stripe came in the first quarter while the other three – including two front ends of one-and-ones – oc- curred in the fourth period before the Chargers made eight straight to end the game. "We missed some free throws I didn't like down the stretch down there, but we stepped up and hit them, too, right towards the end," Elliott said. Junior Andrew Smith paced Gibson Southern – which fell to 11-7 overall and 4-2 in the PAC – with 13 points while Wes Ober- meier, a 6 -foot-7, 245 -pound senior, added 10 points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. "(Obermeier) was defi- nitely the focal point, and we were definitely helping off a couple of their players to try to double him, and make it harder for him to get the ball," Elliott said. "I thought we did a heck of a job defensively all night on him, and pretty much ev- erybody else. We made it pretty tough for them to get anything they wanted." For the game, the Titans made 14 of 41 field goal at- tempts – a 34.1 percent av- erage – and hit five of nine tries from the free throw line while turning the ball over four times. • • • In the junior varsity contest, sophomore Ma- rio Fields scored a team- high 13 points and sopho- more Ethan Scott added 10 points to lead Pike Central to a 52-42 victory over Gib- son Southern. Sophomore Taylor Lintzenich led the Titans with 15 points.
