Poplar Street, Petersburg By Ed Cahill Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net Pike Central High School senior Ja- cob Bohnert shattered the school re- cord to place first in the 200 -yard free- style during the IHSA A Boys' Swim- ming and Diving Sectional Champi- onship at Jasper on Saturday, Feb. 17. A fter placing fourth in the 200 -yard freestyle during preliminaries on Thursday, Feb. 15, with a season-best time of 1:52.26, Jacob Bohnert won the event with a time of 1:47.08 to break the school record time of 1:51.19 set by Lukas Hill during the 2016 -17 sea- son. Jasper junior Jason Fleck – Jacob Bohnert's cousin – finished second with a time of 1:47.79. During last year's sectional finals, Fleck – who tied with Jacob Bohnert for first place in the 100 -yard back- stroke in 2016 – placed second in the 200 -yard freestyle with a time of 1:47.26, while Jacob Bohnert was fourth with a time of 1:51.22. "Jason was up toward the front last year," said Chargers head coach Mike Bohnert, Jacob Bohnert's father, af- terward. "Jason is always going to give you a heck of a race. I'm sure it was in the back of Jake's mind. But he's pret- ty quiet. You can just tell when he's ready to go." "His senior year, he gets to go (to state)," Mike Bohnert added. "His last individual (event) he went on, he tied in the backstroke, so this one he won straight up and he won it by three-quarters of a second, so he swam really hard. He went out hard and he led from the start to the finish and he never let up." Jacob Bohnert admitted that he was nervous before the race began. "Coming into the race, I was just ready to swim," said Jacob Bohnert, who placed fifth in the 200 -yard free- style with a time of 1:54.87 as a soph- omore in 2016. "I didn't really have a strategy. It was more just go hard and hope I didn't die or fall off." Jacob Bohnert also teamed up with seniors Ty Cassitty and Lukas Hill and sophomore Jersey Mills to place first in the 200 -yard freestyle relay with a school record time of 1:31.76, best- ing the previous school record time of 1:32.33 set by Jacob Bohnert, Lu- kas Hill, Aaron Keepes and Chaney McKinney during the sectional finals in 2015. During preliminaries, Jacob Bohnert, Lukas Hill, Cassitty and Mills placed first in the 200 -yard free- style relay with a season-best time of 1:33.00. In 2015, Jacob Bohnert and Lukas Hill teamed up with Aaron Keepes and McKinney to advance to the state meet in the 200 freestyle relay. In 2016, they teamed up with McKinney and Evan Marchino to advance to the state meet in the 200 -yard medley re- lay and, in 2017, they again teamed up with McKinney and Marchino to ad- vance to the state meet in the 200 -yard medley relay and the 400 -yard free- style relay. During Saturday's finals, Jacob Bohnert, Lukas Hill, Cassitty and Mills placed fourth in the 400 -yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:24.24 – a cut of 62/100ths of a second off their second-place time of 3:24.86 during preliminaries, but 2.32 seconds off the season-best time of 3:21.92 they set while placing first in the Pocket Athletic Conference Meet four weeks earlier on Saturday, Jan. 20. Sullivan (16 -5) and Pike Central (9 -11) will tip off at 6:30 p.m., with the winner ad- vancing to a semifinal match- up against Southridge (9 -12) on Friday, March 2, at 6:30 p.m., Eastern time. Princeton (17-4) will square off against Vincennes Lincoln (15 -7) in Tuesday's other quar- terfinal contest at 8 p.m., East- ern time, with the winner ad- vancing to a semifinal match- up against Washington (9 -12) on Friday, March 2, at 8 p.m., Eastern time. The championship game is scheduled for Saturday, March 3, at 7:30 p.m., Eastern time. Pike Central and Sullivan – which was added to the South- ridge Sectional after Jasper moved up to Class 4A – did not play each other during the reg- ular season. Against common opponents this season, the Golden Ar- rows are 2-1, with wins over South Knox (50 -49) on Nov. 22 and at North Knox (79 -24) on Jan. 6 and a loss at Vincennes Lincoln (59 -45) on Jan. 13. Pike Central, meanwhile, is 1-2 against common oppo- nents this season, with a win over North Knox (72-32) on Jan. 22, and losses to South Knox (48 -40) in the Graber Post Buildings Holiday Clas- sic at North Daviess on Dec. 30 and at Vincennes Lincoln See BOOKER on pg 3 See SISK on pg 5 See DRIVE on pg 7 See RECORDS on pg 2 By Ed Cahill Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net Pike Central High School senior Jake Sisk's first-ev- er appearance in the state wrestling meet at Bank- ers Life Fieldhouse on Fri- day, Feb. 16, didn't last very long. However, while Sisk lost by pin in 1:27 to Lawrence- burg senior Mason Parris in the opening round of the 220 -pound weight division, neither he nor Chargers head coach Billy Hewig feel that the journey to Indi- anapolis was a wasted trip. "We don't ever go out thinking we are going to lose, but we knew we had our hands full, so we just went out and tried to catch (Parris) in anything we could," Hewig said. "All in all, we are very proud of Jake and his accomplish- ments this year. One bump in the road is not enough for us to be down about what transpired this year." Parris, who has signed to wrestle at the Universi- ty of Michigan, was leading by a score of 8 -3 – receiv- ing two points each on four takedowns while giving up one point each for three es- capes by Sisk – before he was able roll Sisk over onto Sisk drops first-round loss at state wrestling meet
