Federal tax reduction to benefit Vectren customers this year As a result of the newly enacted federal tax legisla- tion, natural gas and elec- tric customers of Vectren Energy Delivery ( Vectren) will see lower electric and gas rates beginning this year. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which decreased the corporate tax rate from 35 percent to 21 percent, was signed into law on Dec. 22, 2017, and became effective on Jan. 1, 2018. Today, the Indiana Util- ity Regulatory Commis- sion (IURC) issued an or- der providing guidance on a process on how utilities can reflect in their rates and charges the effects of the recent reduction in fed- eral tax rates. This guid- ance aligns with Vectren's intention to request IURC authority to adjust rates and charges to begin pro- viding the benefits of those tax reductions in the near term. If Vectren's request is approved, the result will be lower energy bills for customers. Initial estimates sug- gest that for Vectren elec- tric customers the Feder- al tax reduction will re- duce electric costs by $70 to $ 90 per year. In addi- tion, Vectren customers who also have natural gas service will see an addi- tional decrease between $20 to $ 35 on the gas por- tion of their energy bill. "Customers' bills in- clude the cost of income taxes, and it only makes sense customers should directly benefit from this reduced cost result- ing from the new, lower tax rate," said Brad Ells- worth, president of Vec- tren Energy Delivery of Indiana - South. "We con- tinue to work with our regulatory agencies to ensure that the impact of lower Federal taxes is passed on as quickly as possible." Revised rates reflecting the lower tax rate will re- quire the approval of the IURC. Petersburg Elementary robotics team qualifies to compete in state competition By Andy Heuring Petersburg Elementary School's Ro- botics team placed first out of 38 teams in the VEX IQ robotics tournament on February 10 at the Immanuel Trinity Lu- theran School in Seymour. Their results qualify them to compete at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis on March 10. Petersburg's Conner Loveless, Park Knust, Drew Dawson, Kaden Englert and Noah Meece won the Teamwork Champions category. Petersburg also won the Design Award for most effec- tive and efficient robot design process. The team and their sponsor Terra Knust did a presentation to the Pike County School Board last week. "We are pretty excited to go to Lucas Oil Stadium because, number one, Lu- cas Oil Stadium is in Indianapolis. We'll get to go on the football turf and every- thing. It's just really awesome that we've worked to get there," said Connor Love- less to the school board. The goal of the competition is to pro- mote science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) skills. Team Sponsor Terra Knust said this is the second year for the robotics pro- gram and "Robotics is really growing in Indiana. There are around 1,100 ele- mentary and middle school (robotics) teams. Indiana is actually leading the country in robotics. So it is a big thing," Knust said. "These guys, they have all put in a lot of time. We've been to competitions the last four weekends. So far, they have competed at the Lincoln Trail competi- tion, Newburgh, Tell City and then the Seymour competition. "We are really thankful for all the do- nations we've gotten," said Knust. She said they have received a lot of grant money. Last year they had a Tech Point Foundation for Youth grant which gave them a kit and trained Knust to be a team sponsor, plus one team's registra- tion. An IPL classroom grant of $500 al- lowed them to purchase a playing field to be able to practice with their robots. They used a High Ability funding and a Community Foundation grant of $2,000 along with a Girl Power grant through Tech Point Foundation. It all helped fund their team. "We wouldn't have been able to do it without all the money they gave us," said Loveless. He explained last year when they started they only had one kit and nine kids on the team with one field on which to practice. This year they were able to expand it and get another practice field and three more robotic kits as 11 more people joined the team. While it is the fifth grade team, they also have fourth graders on the team. They hope to move through the state competition and qualify for the world competition in Louisville. But they also want to go beyond this year and continue to compete in mid- dle school. "They are really eager be- cause they want to do something next year in middle school, and I hear it's in the works," said Knust.
