"I think we got a very good draw," Chargers head coach Hunter Elliott said on Mon- day, Feb. 19. "We all got to- gether yesterday and watched (the draw) together as a team. I know our boys are pretty ex- cited and, as a coaching staff, we think we're in a good spot moving forward." "Whoever we ended up drawing, we're going to have to come out and play," Elliott added. "Getting that first- round game will be good for us. I know the boys are very excited. They've gotten to ex- perience cutting down the nets twice. That's something that doesn't come along very often, and they're hungry to do it again." As of Monday, Feb. 19, the Golden Arrows were scoring an average of 61.9 points per game while allowing their op- ponents to score an average of 45.2 points per game. "Sullivan is a team that we don't play during the regu- lar season, and we don't have a whole lot of common oppo- nents," Elliott said. "We do get a chance this Friday to go scout while they play (at Lin- ton-Stockton), so it'll be nice to be able to watch them play." "Sullivan is a very talent- ed team, and from what I've seen, they score a lot of points and they play an up-and-down style," Elliott added. "As I've said all along, I think this sectional's pretty wide open. I believe any team can beat just about any team. The way this year's played out, there's been teams to beat this team and turn around and get beat by somebody else. That's kind of been the case for us as well." Princeton, currently ranked eighth in Class 3A, is 3-0 against sectional opponents this season with wins over Pike Central (66 -52), Vin- cennes Lincoln (52-51) and Washington (78 -42). Vincennes Lincoln is 2-2 against sectional opponents this season with wins over Sul- livan (59 -45) and Pike Central (52-40) and losses to Prince- ton (52-51) and Washington (50 -46). Washington is 2-2 against sectional opponents this season with wins over Vin- cennes Lincoln (50 -46) and Southridge (61-58) and loss- es to Pike Central (47-39) and Princeton (78 -42). Pike Central is 2-2 against sectional opponents this sea- son with wins over Southridge (70 -50) and Washington (47- 39) and losses to Princeton (66 -52) and Vincennes Lin- coln (52-40). Sullivan is 0 -1 against sec- tional opponents this season with a loss to Vincennes Lin- coln (59 -45). Southridge is 0 -2 against sectional opponents this sea- son with losses to Pike Cen- tral (70 -50) and Washington (61-58). By Kenzie Rudolph Press-Dispatch Writer sports@pressdispatch.net Recent Pike Central graduate Sydney Brooks, of Winslow, is a student-athlete at Oakland City University. She is com- muting from home and playing soccer. At the Fall Sports Banquet at OCU, Brooks won the Newcomer of the Year award for the Women's soccer team. "It's such a great honor, and I can't thank my coaches and teammates enough for supporting me throughout this past season," said Brooks. She added that she works hard both during practice and games, and that she has been given a great opportunity to play at the college level. She said, "I try to give 110 percent all of the time, because if I don't, I'm a wasted opportunity...I'm going to give it my all every time I step on to the field." She had dreams of playing a sport in college, as sports have been one of the most important things in her life. When Brooks first visited OCU, she fell in love. During her junior year at Pike Cen- tral, OCU contacted Allie Scheckner, the assistant girls' soccer coach for Pike Central and OCU women's soccer alum- na, about being interested in Brooks. "At the time, the coach was Emman- uel Awotula, and the assistant coach was Katie Harrison. Things changed and Coach Harrison was named head coach. She contacted me and we hit it off," added Brooks. She said that playing at the college level was a lot of what she expected it would be, plus a lot more. She added that it is a lot of hard work and time away from home, but it is also laughs with teammates and coaches, tears shed af- ter a hard loss, and memories that she will never forget. "I've made some friends that I will keep for the rest of my life because of soccer. It's hard being both a student and an athlete in college, but I don't re- gret it one bit," said Brooks. She described this year's season as rough. Games were lost that shouldn't have been, but there was also success. The team was practically brand new, with only a few returners. Brooks added, "One of the high- lights for myself is stopping a PK (pen- alty kick) in our last home game that might have won the game for the other team. It was a great moment and I hon- estly think it was the best game I have ever played." She hopes to continue to be a good student after making the Dean's List her first semester. She understands that be- ing a student has to come before being an athlete. She also hopes to use the up- coming spring season as something to build off of so that she can be better pre- pared for the tough fall schedule ahead. She misses high school, but college has opened her eyes to many new oppor- tunities and responsibilities. "I wouldn't be in the place where I am now without the people that I have surrounded myself with. God, my fam- ily, coaches, friends and boyfriend have all supported me through it all," stat- ed Brooks. She cannot wait to see what else OCU has in store for her. That's been key for us all year, and it will be key for us moving forward." • • • In the junior varsity con- test, a lay-up by Leathco with one second remaining lifted Pike Central to a 46 - 45 victory over Forest Park. Leathco paced the Chargers with 12 points while junior Andrew Krieg added nine points. Freshman Simon Ja- cob led Forest Park with 18 points.
