BY JENNIFER DEMERITT T he Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is famous for a few things: Mitt Romney; that peculiar undergarment its adherents are rumored to wear; and their practice of traveling far and wide in search of converts. Now the cheerfully blasphemous musical The Book of Mormon, which has been the hottest thing on Broadway since it opened in 2011, is following suit, visiting the Boston Opera House April 9 to 62 28 to preach the gospel of comedy. Matt Stone and Trey Parker, the creators of South Park, are two points of the unholy trinity that conceived The Book of Mormon, and the popularity of their foul-mouthed, warmhearted animated comedy series helped feed the tremendous buzz that surrounded The Book of Mormon even before the curtain rose on its first performance. The third creative linchpin, composer/lyricist Robert Lopez, has been a big name on Broadway since the launch of his Tony Award–winning musical comedy Avenue Q, which pokes fun at the high ideals children are fed through Sesame Street. As every religion has a creation myth, so too does this particular musical about religion. Parker and Stone saw Avenue Q soon after it opened.
