The Press-Dispatch Sports Wednesday, Januar y 24, 2018 B- 3 ning column," Pike Central head coach Kyle McCutchan said. The Lady Chargers took an 4-0 lead on back-to-back baskets by seniors Brook Nalley and Audra Stone be- fore Barr-Reeve sophomore Kara Hughes hit two free throws to narrow the defi- cit to 4-2 with 3:33 left in the first quarter. A fter sophomore Jayln Nelson scored – off an as- sist by senior Demi Croak – to extend Pike Central's lead to 6 -2, Lady Vikings sophomore Moriah Bullock hit back-to-back three-point- ers to give Barr-Reeve an 8 -6 lead with 2:09 remaining in the opening period. The Lady Chargers would score the next three points – on a free throw by Hendrix- son and a basket by senior Halley Powers – to surge ahead 9 -8 early in the sec- ond quarter. However, Barr- Reeve regained the lead – at 10 -9 – on a basket by Hughes with five minutes left in the first half. A three-pointer by Croak and a basket by Nalley gave Pike Central a 14-10 lead be- fore the Lady Vikings scored the last four points of the first half – on baskets by ju- nior Hannah Fuhs and ju- nior Rachel Wilson – to tie the score at 14-14. During the first half, the Lady Chargers made just six of 17 field goal attempts – in- cluding just one of four tries from beyond the three-point arc – and were 1-for-2 from the free throw line while turning the ball over five times. "They played hard," Mc- Cutchan said of Barr-Reeve. "They actually played zone, and I hadn't actually seen them zone on film. It wasn't like we were unprepared to- tally – we prepare for just about anything somebody can throw at us – but they did a good job defensive- ly. They really matched up well against our zone of- fense. They made us uncom- fortable." Barr-Reeve, meanwhile, made five of 12 field goal at- tempts during the first half – including two of four tries from beyond the three-point arc – and was 2-for-4 from the free throw line while turning the ball over 10 times. "That's been our calling card," McCutchan said of the Lady Chargers' defensive ef- fort during the first half. "We have some limitations on both sides but, defensive- ly, when we're playing hard and competing, we're usual- ly pretty competitive. That's what kept us in the game, so I was proud of our effort." The lead would exchange hands four times during the third quarter as neither team was able to take more than a two-point lead. However, with Barr-Reeve leading 26 -24 with 5:54 left in the fourth period, a three-pointer by Croak and a basket by sophomore Lau- ren Vaughn – off an assist by junior Becca Crow – gave the Lady Chargers a 29 -26 lead with 5:14 remaining. A fter a free throw by soph- omore Hannah Fuhs pulled the Lady Vikings to with- in 29 -27, Croak hit another three-pointer to extend Pike Central's lead to 32-27. Free throws by Nalley and Crow would give the Lady Char- gers a 34-27 lead with 3:16 left. However, Barr-Reeve would score the last seven points of regulation – on a three-pointer and a basket by Bullock and a basket by sophomore Melissa Wagler – to send the game into over- time tied 34-34. "They capitalized on a few of our missed free throws and a turnover," McCutchan said. "You've got to finish teams off, and that's really what we've struggled with a little bit this year. That's on me. I've got to get us where we get over that hump, to where we can get a lead and just put a team away." The Lady Vikings won the tip at the start of the four-minute overtime peri- od, but a steal by Crow set up a basket by Hendrixson that gave Pike Central a 36 - 34 lead with 1:22 left. A fter Bullock hit a three-pointer to give Barr- Reeve a 37-36 lead with just under one minute remain- LAYUP Continued from page 1 SPORTS BRIEF Petersburg Little League baseball/softball sign-up dates set Physical sign-up dates for the Petersburg Lit- tle League baseball and softball leagues will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 31, from 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturday, Feb. 3, from 8 a.m. to noon; Sat- urday, Feb. 10, from noon to 4 p.m.; and on Sunday, Feb. 11, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., at the Petersburg Little League concession stands, located at 501 E.
