Poplar Street, Petersburg Goff wins second straight PAC wrestling title Senior Silas Goff placed first in the 285 -pound weight class for the second straight year during the Pocket Athletic Conference Tournament held Saturday, Jan. 20, at Heritage Hills. Goff, after opening the tournament with a win by forfeit, won three straight bouts by decisions, including one over Heritage Hills' Aidian Rea for the championship. "Silas wrestled great today," Chargers head coach Billy Hewig said of Goff, who improved to 31-2 this season. "He did not put himself in bad spots and took advantage of mistakes that his opponents made. He is a two-time conference champ, and that is not an easy accomplishment." Three Pike Central wrestlers placed sec- ond in their respective weight classes – senior Dylan Jones at 126 pounds, senior Gavin Boyd at 170 pounds, and senior Christian Alvey at 195 pounds. Jones (30 -2) won his first two bouts – the first by pin and the second by a major decision – be- fore defaulting because of an injury to North Posey's Albert Spencer in the championship match. Boyd (23-9) won his first two bouts by pin be- fore dropping a loss by decision to North Posey's Colton Gamblin in the championshp match. "Gavin wrestled really well all day and wres- tled a very tight match against an opponent from North Posey that beat him by quite a bit the last time they wrestled," Hewig said. Alvey (28 -4) won his first two bouts – the first by a pin and the second by a decision – before losing by pin to Southridge's Chase Taylor in the championship match. "Christian did not have a bad day," Hewig said. "He just got caught in a bad spot at a bad time and lost his match. Other than that, he wrestled well all day." Senior Jake Sisk placed third in the 220 -pound weight class, going 3-1 with one win by decision and two wins by pin – to improve to 30 -3. In addition, three Chargers placed fourth in their respective weight classes: sophomore Dal- ton Williams went 2-2 with one win by decision and one win by forfeit at 106 pounds to improve to 26 -7; junior Randy Powell went 2-2 with one win by decision and one win by a major deci- sion at 132 pounds to improved to 14-10 ; and By Ed Cahill Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net A lay-up by senior Erika Hendrixson with four sec- onds left in overtime lifted the Pike Central High School girls' basketball team to a 39 - 37 victory over visiting Barr- Reeve on Saturday, Jan. 20. The win ended a three- game losing streak by the La- dy Chargers – who improved to 9 -8 – while Barr-Reeve fell to 4-14 with its fourth straight defeat. "Coming off the way that we played at Loogootee, and having lost a couple of tough games close before that, we were a little rusty, but it's good to get back in the win- By Ed Cahill Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net Senior Breyton Booker scored 26 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and dished out five assists to lead the Pike Central High School boys' basketball team to a 72-32 victory over visiting North Knox on Monday, Jan. 22. Booker scored 18 of his points in the second half – hitting eight of 11 field goal attempts and going 2-for-3 from the free throw line – as the Chargers outscored the Warriors 44-14 to turn a 10 -point halftime lead in- to a 40 -point win. "I thought Booker was kind of our energizer tonight," said Pike Central head coach Hunter Elliott, whose team improved to 5 -6 with its second straight victory. "I thought he was really playing hard and being very aggressive toward the basket." "I keep telling him not to settle for the jumper, and tonight he was attacking the basket," Elliott added. "I think he really kind of sparked us." Senior Bryant Nalley added 22 points and five assists in the winning effort while grabbing nine rebounds and three steals as the Chargers out-rebounded North Knox 38 -16. "Two games ago, I was really challenging them, that we had to clean up the rebounds," Elliott said. "I have to have kids want the rebound. Bryant can, and Book- er has accepted that challenge and we've started re- bounding very well." North Knox, which fell to 0 -14, put up a fight early on, scoring six straight points – on baskets by junior Keegan Thomas, senior Luke Brocksmith and senior Parker Tromley – to take a 10 -8 lead with 1:58 left in the first period. Following an exchange of baskets, Nalley scored – off an assist by Booker – to send the game into the sec- ond quarter tied 12-12. "I thought we didn't come in focused," Elliott said. "They probably looked at the record a little bit and came in thinking they were just going to walk all over them. You can't ever approach a game like that. I thought our intensity wasn't there." Natalie Bohnert placed first in the 100 -yard back- stroke with a time of 59.15 seconds, breaking the PAC record time of 59.32 sec- onds she set while winning the event in 2017. South- ridge senior Kera Jochum finished second with a time of 1:06.55. Natalie Bohnert also placed first in the 200 -yard individual medley with a time of 2:15.14, less than one second off her own school record time of 2:14.39. Her- itage Hills senior Vicki Nel- son finished a distant second with a time of 2:33.12. "She had some really good swims," Lady Chargers head coach Mike Bohnert, Natalie Bohnert's father, said. "She was a little off on the back- stroke. The IM, she was about a second off of it, too, or a little less than a second." Last year, as a sophomore, Natalie Bohnert advanced to the state meet in both events. She also advanced to the state meet in the 100 -yard backstroke as a freshman. "Right now, she's a little farther along than she was last year in both events," Mike Bohnert said. "She was really hoping for that IM re- cord, but the next girl was 18 seconds behind her, so that's not much of a push." Senior Quin Bailey, meanwhile, placed first in the 500 -yard freestyle with a personal record time of 6:09.07, besting her previ- ous PR time of 6:22.62. Tell City freshman Emma Arm- strong was second with a time of 6:23.31. Saturday's PAC meet marked only the third ap- pearance by Bailey in the 500 -yard freestyle. She fin- ished second in the event during a tri-meet hosted by Boonville on Nov. 30 and then placed first in the event during a dual home meet against Vincennes Lincoln on Jan. 10. "I think I put her in just to see what I could get," Mike Bohnert said of Bailey's first appearance in the 500 -yard freestyle. "It wasn't a great swim, but it wasn't bad. Then I thought, you know, I'm go- ing to switch that over and just see what we can do. It ended up being a really good swim for her, a really solid swim." Bailey and Natalie Bohnert also teamed up with seniors Cass Conder and Brittany Young to place first in the 200 -yard medley relay with a season-best time of 2:02.93 – approximately one-and-a-half second off the school record of 2:01.34 set by Natalie Bohnert, Cond- er, Young and senior Maya Frederick in 2017 – and first in the 400 -yard freestyle re- lay with a season-best time of 4:05.37. "In the 400 free relay, our girls were behind by five sec- onds when Brittany finished, and Natalie hit the water and swam a personal best of 55.3 (seconds) and caught the girl and passed her," Mike Bohnert said. "One of the officials had me come over and he told me, 'That was the most exciting race I've ever seen in my life.' I had a Heritage Hills guy stand- ing behind me and he said, 'She's going to catch her,' be- fore she even hit the water. So we had a pretty good end to the meet." Placing second in indi- vidual events for the Lady Chargers were Bailey in the 200 -yard freestyle with a season-best time of 2:16.18; and freshman Jenna Mey- er in diving with an 11-dive score of 313.60 points, just See LAYUP on page 3 See PAC on page 4 See BOOKER on page 2 See GOFF on page 5
