BRIEFLY In late 2017, the Pike County SWCD, partnering with the Gibson County SWCD, submitted an appli- cation to continue funding the full time soil techni- cian through a Clean Water Indiana grant. That grant, along with two more that the Pike County SWCD partnered on, was selected for funding and set to begin in 2018. 26 applications representing 41 soil and water conser vation districts were received from across the state totaling 1.99 million requested to continue conser vation efforts. Grant applications had to meet certain criteria's to be considered for funding and were scored blindly based on grant writing. As a result, the Pike SWCD is pleased to announce the following grants that will be starting in 2018: Soil Conser vation Technician Project: This grant was written and submitted by the Pike County SWCD to continue the partnership with the Gibson County SWCD on employing the current, full time soil technician, Emily Kelly. Kelly will be available to both SWCD's as well as partner agencies and the public to assist and layout conser vation efforts in both counties and continue to perform CRP field checks; cover crop, residue and no-till checks; assist with NRCS program management along with other office duties. Kelly's grant will run through 2020 and her home base will be out of the Pike County SWCD office. Invasive Species Technician: With Vanderburgh County SWCD being the lead and submitting this grant, the Pike SWCD entered into a partnership with Vanderburgh, Gibson, Warrick and Posey to hire a full time Invasive Technician. The Invasive Technician's main objective will be to introduce and start up Cooperative Weed Management Areas (CWMA) in each of the partnering counties, ser ving as the coordinator of each CWMA in each county through the end of the grant. The technician will also host an annual work day in each county to re- move invasive plant species in a public area, preform invasive plant species studies/sur veys of each coun- ty and map accordingly and organize educational events to assist landowners with combating invasive plant species on their property. Be on the lookout for this new staff person in late Januar y! Soil Health on Reclaimed Mine Land: Knox Coun- ty SWCD initiated and submitted the grant to hire a coordinator for the current federal RCPP program in 11 southern Indiana counties. In a partnership with Daviess, Dubois, Sullivan, Warrick and Pike, the Knox County SWCD will employ the assistance of Jeff Coats, retired NRCS Easement Program Special- ist. Coats will oversee the Reclaimed Mine Land RCPP program in the six counties applied for the grant and assist producers in improving their soil health on reclaimed mine land. The program is ran through the Environmental Quality Incentive Pro- gram and is a special pot of federal money set aside for producers to apply for and receive cost share funding on cover crops, no-till and nutrient-pest management. To learn more about the RCPP Soil Health on Reclaimed Mine Land program, contact the SWCD office today at 812.354.6120 ex. 3. Pike SWCD awarded three CWI grants Emily Kelly, Pike-Gibson Soil Technician, performs cover crop field checks in the fall of 2017 in Pike Coun- ty. To date, Kelly has checked over 2,500 acres of cov- er crops in Pike and Gibson counties since starting in May 2015. Showcase Dinner In honor of being awarded the 2017 District Showcase Award, the Pike County SWCD invited part- nership leaders to attend a showcase dinner where the staff and supervisors got to show first hand the conservation work that has been completed in the county. Leaders from the Natural Resources Conser- vation Service, the Indiana State Department of Agriculture, the State Soil Conservation Board and the Indiana Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts made the trip down to Pike County in late 2017 to attend the evening's festivities. Cover crops Over 3,200 acres of cover crops were plant- ed in Pike County through the SWCD Conserva- tion Cost Share program in 2017. The program is funded by various grants obtained by the SWCD. Those grants include funding from Clean Water Indiana, Caterpillar Foundation, Alcoa Founda- tion and the Walton Foundation. The Nature Con- servancy of Indiana assisted with securing some of those grant funds.
