Mallory Hunt scored a game-high 10 points to lead the Pike Central Mid- dle School eighth grade girls' basketball team to a 37-13 victory at Haubstadt on Tuesday, Nov. 21. Hunt, who also grabbed four rebounds, netted six points in the first period as the Lady Chargers jumped out to a 12-2 lead. "Mallory Hunt worked herself back up to the start- ing position in the middle of the floor," announced Pike Central head coach Eric Knight, whose team im- proved to 4-1 with its third straight victory. "I have been pushing her pret- ty hard each practice and she came out and played her best game of the year. She was a dominant threat in the post. Haubstadt did not have an answer for her." The Lady Chargers out-rebounded Haubstadt 28 -16 – with Kya Leighty and Kya Sullivan grabbing five each – while turn- ing the ball over just eight times. "Before the game, we only had three things writ- ten on the big board – re- bounds, turnovers and free throws," Knight said. "We did great on two of them." Pike Central, however, only made three of 10 at- tempts from the charity stripe. "That dreaded free throw line is what keeps me up late at night," Knight said. "That is something over the break we will spend hours on. I'm kind of glad we have a week or so before we hit the hard- wood again." Sophie Carnahan add- ed nine points for the Lady Chargers while grabbing four rebounds. "Sophie Carnahan took pride in her game and looked to score," Knight said. "We have been push- ing her to look to be a threat on offense and she did a great job doing it in this game. Haubstadt was playing a zone against us and Sophie looked to shoot over it or drive middle and pull up." "I could tell the differ- ence in this game com- pared to the others as we really looked to be the ag- gressor and took the ball to the rim as much as possi- ble," Knight added. "This group is picking up the lit- tle things and improving each and every day." Sullivan tossed in six points for the Lady Char- gers while Hannah Wood- ford netted four points. Leighty and Ashton Catt tallied three points each, and Albany Ashley round- ed out the scoring with two points. "The girls came to play," Knight said. "They worked the ball great and played really good as a team on the offensive side. It was a fun game to watch and coach. On the defensive side, I can't say how proud I was with the girls. They stepped up and played with heart and hustle. They are taking pride in their de- fense, and that's what my groups work on each and every year." In the seventh grade contest, Haubstadt – trail- ing 9 -8 after three periods – outscored Pike Central 4- 2 in the fourth quarter to rally for a 12-11 win. Del- aney Welch paced the Lady Chargers with four points while Liberty Taylor added three points. Kennedy Wil- lis and Kahle Young tallied two points each. Pike Central will re- turn to action on Thurs- day, Nov. 30, when the La- dy Chargers will play at North Knox. They will play at Wood Memorial on Tues- day, Dec. 5, before return- ing home to host Heritage Hills on Thursday, Dec. 7.
