You can't get by with this Religious Viewpoint by Clyde Dupin Minutes with the Bible by Pastor Ricky Kurth Baptist Baptist Baptist CHURCH CHURCH Notes Notes Notes Assembly of God Continued in next column Continued in next column Ramblings of my mind by Lowell Thomas Let me share some of the reasons people believe in God. I think every human being, in varying ways and degrees deep inside, wonders about God and the future life. It is a belief in God that gives us hope and love for one another. Without this faith, life has little purpose. Most Americans believe there is a God. According to studies and surveys, most peo- ple say it is important to develop their faith and want a relationship with God. Our hu- man intellect tells us where there is a de- sign there is a designer. I believe that de- signer is God. It is this belief that gives us a sense of right and wrong. We know there are some things right and wrong regardless of circumstances. This universe is too great and wonder- ful to exist without the hand of God. This God hears and answers our prayers in many wonderful ways. I know many people whose lives have been transformed through faith in God's Son, Jesus Christ. These people have peace and joy and offer love, com- fort and hope to oth- ers. When we see the hand of God at work in lives it is easier to believe than not to believe. I believe in God be- cause of the assurance He gives me of eter- nal life. He manifests His love and power in many ways. Even science cannot supply the final link in the chain of how we came to be and why we are here. I choose to be- lieve that final link is God. The very beau- ty, order and diversity of life on earth could not have happened randomly. There would have been no eclipse last month. One of Pastor Stam's favorite jokes went something like this: Teacher: "Johnny, what's the difference between a pronoun and a preposition? " Johnny: "Yeah, that's what I say, what's the difference! " Despite Johnny's indifference, we know there is a great deal of difference between pronouns and prepositions! These parts of speech are important, especially when it comes to Bible study. For instance, Pastor Stam once wrote: "Not once does Paul in his epistles teach that members of the Body of Christ are bap- tized with or in the Spirit." In response to this, we sometimes get let- ters asking about this verse: "For by one Spirit are we all baptized in- to one body…" (I Cor. 12:13). But a close look will reveal an important difference in the preposition used in each case. The Apostle Paul taught that believ- ers today are baptized "by" the Spirit, but Pastor Stam doesn't say we're not baptized by the Spirit, he says we are not baptized "with" the Spirit. No contradiction here! Speaking of Christ, John the Baptist pre- dicted: "He shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost" (Matt. 3:11). This prophecy was fulfilled at Pente- cost, where "they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with oth- er tongues" (Acts 2:4). It is important to notice that Christ is the Baptizer here, and that He baptized people with the Spirit. This is often confused with I Corinthians 12:13, but in this passage the Spirit is the Baptiz- er, baptizing people into the Body. That's quite different than what happened at Pente- cost, where the Lord was the Baptizer, bap- tizing people with the Spirit, enabling them to speak in tongues. This explains why believers today are not able to speak in languages they never stud- ied, as they did at Pentecost, for we do not have their baptism. But if we do not have their baptism, we must also conclude that at Pentecost they did not have our baptism. That is, we are not baptized by Christ with the Spirit, and they were not baptized by the Spirit into the Body of Christ. We realize this runs contrary to the com- mon teaching that the Church began at Pen- tecost, where it is said that believers were first baptized into the Body, but we believe the difference in prepositions used in these passages is just one of many evidences that the Body of Christ began later, with the rais- ing up of Paul. You just can't get by with mixing with and by! Ramblings of my mind by Lowell Thomas This has been a very busy week which I had something going on each day. Weeks like this are often good if you feel like do- ing it all. I must admit that getting older makes some of your stamina a little harder to find. My wife was on the tour of New York City with Dee Stephens and friends so being busy was a way to fill your day without be- ing lonely and trust me I was busy enough to combat my free time. The week started out with going to Evans- ville to get the Honda's oil changed and then to River Walk communities to entertain the residents with our music. Entertaining at River Walk is fun because they are so easy to get involved with singing along and even dancing. The dancing is not always fancy but they enjoy swaying to the music and rhythm. They recently had a car show and talent contest but we missed out on it. It will be great when all the street closing will be over so you don't have to change your route. Tuesday was the day free enough to pick up around the house and do up the dish- es so the wife didn't come home to a huge mess after a week of batching. We also en- tertained at Golden Living that evening. Wednesday started at 6:30 with breakfast at Cakes and Coffee and it was delicious. Randy or someone there can sure make a cinnamon roll that simply melts in your mouth. If you haven't eaten there you must try them out because it is your loss if you don't pay them a visit for a meal. The work- ers there are very friendly and treat each guest as a friend. His answers will happen in His perfect timing. "The Lord is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him.
