Against Vincennes Lin- coln: SPORTS BRIEFS Co-ed softball benefit tourney to be held Oct. 21 A co-ed softball tourna- ment benefitting Tommy Daves will be played on Saturday, Oct. 21, at the Winslow ballpark, start- ing at 8 a.m. The entry fee is $200 per team. The deadline to sign up is Monday, Oct. 16. All proceeds will go di- rectly to Tommy Daves to help cover medical ex- penses associated with his battle with cancer. Youth Day is October 14 Saturday, Oct. 14, will be a fantastic day for any- one interested in spend- ing time in the field or on the trap range. The 12th Annual Pike County Bird Hunter's Club NR A Youth Day is nearing, so mark your calenders for a day of varied outdoor activi- ty plus the chance to win one of 13 quality shotguns or rifles in a random draw- ing. Youth Day begins at 8 a.m. EDT with sign- in, breakfast and then a choice for youth of start- ing with BB gun shooting, darts, .22-caliber rifle, muzzle loading, archery, trap shooting or Chukar hunting over dogs. After lunch and a day of activities for young- sters and their families, a search and rescue demon- stration will be presented. This year, the Union Vol- unteer Fire Department will have a fire truck on display. At the conclusion of the day, a random drawing will be held for six Rem- ington 11-87 semi-auto shotguns, four Remington 20 -gauge 870 shotguns, two Ruger .22 rifles and the grand prize of a $700 Weatherby semi-auto shot gun. Included in the draw- ing are Bear Archery sets and equipment. All youth ages seven through 18 are welcome and are provided break- fast and lunch. Do not bring any firearms or am- munition to the event. All equipment plus 12 gauge, 20 gauge, 410 and 22 shells are provided by the club, the NR A and local organi- zations and sponsors. Par- ents are welcome and can enjoy breakfast and lunch for a donation. All 4-H shooting sports, boy and girl scouts and all other interested youth are wel- come. A hunter education card is required for Chu- kar hunting. The first 50 youth to register will re- ceive a free T-shirt. The club is located be- tween Oakland City and Petersburg about two miles west of SR 57 at Di- vision Road. Signs will be posted. Pike Central ended the regular season with an over- all record of 5 -12, including a 2-6 mark against Pocket Athletic Conference oppo- nents. The Chargers will take on Forest Park in the semi- final round of the sectional tournament at Jasper at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 27. The Pike Central-For- est Park winner will ad- vance to the championship match against the winner of the other semifinal match between Jasper and South- ridge at 4:30 p.m. on Thurs- day, Sept. 28. Ed Cahill photo Nalley leads Lady Chargers to three-set win at Vincennes Rivet Senior Brook Nalley scored a team-high 13 points to lead the Pike Cen- tral High School volleyball team to a 25 -17, 25 -17, 25 -18 victory at Vincennes Rivet on Tuesday, Sept. 19. Nalley had eight kills, five ace serves and two blocks as the Lady Chargers im- proved to 9 -13 with their fifth straight win. Juniors Kylie Dawson (8 kills), Taylor Lamey (7 kills, 1 block) and Alyssa Jenkins (4 kills, 4 blocks) scored eight points each while se- nior Shelbi Pipes (3 ace serves, 3 kills) added six points. Junior Becca Crow led the Lady Chargers in set-assists with 15 while Shelbi Pipes and junior Madison Sisk added 10 and 2, respectively. Senior Morgan Whann, meanwhile, had a team- high 17 digs. Senior Peyton Sorgius (13 digs) and junior Alex Traylor (10 digs) also reached double figures in digs. Crow and Traylor also dished out two ace serves each. "We played very well," Pike Central head coach Tonya Walton said. "We had a strong offense going and the defense did a great job at getting the setters the ball. Overall, it was a great win! Senior Brook Nalley had four kills while senior Shelbi Pipes and juniors Kylie Daw- son and Taylor Lamey added two kills each. Senior Pey- ton Sorgius had Pike Cen- tral's only ace serve. Junior Becca Crow dished out a team-high nine set-as- sists while Shelbi Pipes had three. Senior Morgan Whann posted a team-high 30 digs. With the loss, the Lady Chargers slipped to 9 -14 overall and 2-2 in the Pock- et Athletic Conference. In the junior varsity con- test, sophomore Audrey Keepes had 10 kills to lead Pike Central to a 18 -25, 25 - 18, 15 -8 victory over South Spencer. Sophomores Aubrie Daw- son (4 kills, 1 ace serve), Alexis Englert (3 ace serves, 2 kills) and Karsyn Pipes (3 kills, 2 ace serves) scored five points each. Sophomore Emma Rus- sell dished out a team-high 12 set-assists while Daw- son and Keepes led the La- dy Chargers in digs with 15 and 11, respectively. Soph- omore Lily Frederick-Rice, who had two ace serves, add- ed nine digs. Pike Central, which host- ed Tell City on Tuesday, Sept. 26, will travel to Te- cumseh on Thursday, Sept. 28, before returning home to host Northeast Dubois on Monday, Oct. 2. On Tuesday, Oct. 3, the Lady Chargers will play at Gibson Southern. In addition, Pike Cen- tral's junior varsity squad will compete in a junior var- sity tournament being host- ed by Tecumseh on Satur- day, Sept. 30. PCMS cross country teams compete in Barr-Reeve Invitational Fifth grader Blaine Barnett finished 27th out of 82 total runners with a time of 12:45 as the Pike Central Middle School boys' cross country team competed in the Barr- Reeve Invitational on Thurs- day, Sept. 21. In addition, sixth grader Wyatt Luff placed 62nd with a time of 14:21. "Blaine and Wyatt were both mentally locked in and ready to compete in a chal- lenging race," Pike Central head coach Bridget Butch- er said. "The theme and fo- cus for the evening was to face your fears, whether that be the heat, the hills, or the competition. Blaine came out of the start elbows wide and fighting hard to make sure he was in a comfortable position with the pack. With time to settle into his race pace and everyone starting to spread out, he began passing people with ease. At one point I be- lieve he passed a good group of 10 athletes." "Wyatt did a great job sink- ing into his rhythm and main- taining a good, strong stride as he attacked the hills," Butcher continued.
