The Press-Dispatch Sports Wednesday, September 27, 2017 B- 7 PCMS 6th grade volleyball teams sweep North Knox Karley Kavanaugh served up a team- high 10 points as the Pike Central Mid- dle School sixth grade volleyball team defeated host North Knox 25 -8, 25 -16 on Monday, Sept. 18. A fter a sideout on the first set's open- ing serve gave the Lady Chargers a 1- 0 lead, Kavanaugh served up nine con- secutive points to extend Pike Central's lead to 10 -0. North Knox would score to cut the deficit to 10 -1 before the Lady Char- gers rattled off three straight points – including two following serves by Brai- ley Mills – to stretch their lead to 13-1. The Lady Warriors would get no clos- er than 11 points as Pike Central took a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three match. In the second set, North Knox would fall behind 8 -3 before scoring six of the next eight points to close to within 10 -9. However, the Lady Chargers scored the next four points – including three following serves by Madelyn Lansford – to open up a 14-9 lead. The Lady Warriors closed to with- in three points – at 15 -12 – before Pike Central scored five of the next six points to open up a 20 -13 lead while cruising to the second-set victory. For the match, Mills had six points off serves and Lansford and Shelby Meadows had five and six, respectively, as the Lady Chargers improved to 4-2. "Everyone played great," said Pike Central head coach Stephanie Shedd. "The team worked together. Our pass- ing was amazing, along with team com- munication. Brailey really passed well and was all over the court. Once again, Karley was consistent with her serves and her teammates backed her up de- fensively all night." In the "B" match, Jaidyn Gogel had a team-high 13 service points as the Lady Chargers swept to a 25 -13, 25 -20 victory. A fter North Knox took an early 1-0 lead in the first set, Pike Central scored 13 of the next 14 points – including four following serves by Loren Huck and seven following serves by Gogel – to take a 13-2 lead. North Knox would get no closer than 10 points the rest of the opening set. In the second set, Pike Central held a 17-16 lead before scoring five straight points – including four following serves by Gogel – to stretch its lead to 22-16. The Lady Warriors would rally to within 23-20 before the Lady Chargers scored the next two points, including the match-winner following a serve by Zarah Sallee. Huck and Sallee scored five service points each as the Pike Central "B" team improved to 2-2. "Our serving won the match," Shedd said. "The girls got the ball over the net and worked hard on defense to pass the ball well. Jaidyn served very consis- tently and Addy Russell played the floor well. Athalee Loveless was very aggres- sive and did a great job." The Lady Chargers will host Vin- cennes Clark at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 27, Haubstadt at 6 p.m. on Thurs- day, Sept. 28, and Barton at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 2, before playing at Vincennes Clark on Wednesday, Oct. 4. pushing through the pain." Jasper placed first as a team with 35 points, fol- lowed by South Knox (41 points), Barr-Reeve (79), Washington (129), Loo- gootee (141), Linton-Stock- ton (189), St. James (198), Princeton (206), Northeast Dubois (209), North Knox and Vincennes Rivet (tied at 242) and Washington Cath- olic (322). Pike Central and Shoals did not have enough runners to qualify for a team score. In the girls' division, Lady Chargers eighth grader An- na Whitehead placed 35th out of a total of 79 runners with a time of 14:28. Eighth grader Morgan Sallee placed 48th with a time of 15:06, sixth grad- er Michaela Gray placed 49th with a time of 15:09 and eighth grader Quinlan Teague placed 53rd with a time of 15:13. In addition, sixth grader Lexie Onyett placed 56th with a time of 15:20 ; eighth grader Morgan Anderson placed 66th with a time of 16:21; and sixth grader Ru- by Sallee placed 67th with a time of 16:34. As a team, Pike Cen- tral placed ninth with 232 points, trailing South Knox (39 points), Barr-Reeve (79), Jasper (93), Northeast Du- bois (103), Princeton (105), Linton (162), North Knox (171) and St. James (207). Loogootee (242) was 10th. Shoals, Vincennes Rivet and Washington also par- ticipated, but did not have enough runners to qualify for a team score. "My Lady Chargers who competed in the A race this evening stuck together like a pack of wolves," Butcher said. "Ruby Sallee has had to fight through a tough week, fighting through some health issues, and I was very proud of her for completing the race this evening. Al- though this is not the time she wants leading into PAC, we still have a week to work on improvement." "Anna Whitehead had a strong mental attitude and it shined through when it needed to the most," Butch- er added. "Morgan Sallee and Michaela Gray started out and completed the race together. They used each other's energy and perse- verance to attack the hills and keep off competition trying to gain ahead. Quin- lan Teague had a solid per- formance. She kept a solid watch on Sallee and Gray to help maintain a strong Char- ger force. Lexie Onyett and Morgan Anderson each did exactly what I asked all of my girls to do – control your race. Both were mentally strong throughout the race and helped keep the energy alive for the team." In the boys' and girls' B race, fourth grader Brayden Hartley was Pike Central's top finisher in the boys' divi- sion, placing 76th out of 222 total runners with a time of 15:33. He was followed by fifth grader Carter McCain, who placed 191st with a time of 21:18, and fourth grader Garry Anderson, who placed 195th with a time of 33:03. "Brayden, Carter and Gar- ry each did a great job ac- cepting my challenges for them this evening," Butch- er said. "Near the end of the course, I demanded that they pass the one person in front of them, and each of the boys took charge and put themselves one more person in front of the finish line." In the girls' division, Pike Central fifth grader Xavery Weisman was the top finish- er while placing 27th overall with a time of 13:17. "Xavery had an outstand- ing race," Butcher said. "Through the heat, mental adversity and the large com- petition, she shined. She be- gan the race in the top three girl individuals, and with less than half a mile to go, she was the first girl in the B race." Also placing for the Lady Chargers were: • Fifth grader Izzy Luker placed 78th overall with a time of 15:34. • Fifth grader Eibhlin Teague placed 111th overall with a time of 17:04. • Fourth grader Gracie Hill placed 122nd overall with a time of 17:16. • Fifth grader Kaylyn Warner placed 134th over- all with a time of 17:37. • Fifth grader Ella Hart- ke placed 140th overall with a time of 17:43. • Fifth grader Karlee Bolin placed 143rd overall with a time of 17:49. • Fifth grader Destiny Jackson placed 177th over- all with a time of 20 :03. • Fifth grader Brenna Potts placed 182nd overall with a time of 20 :30. • Eighth grader Hailey Parker placed 198th overall with a time of 23:08. "The B race was a chal- lenging one," Butcher said. "It was a race that became more much more mental than physical. Hot weather, thick air, and over 200 ath- letes to compete against, in a good five minutes, you could easily take yourself out of the race mentally. For some of my athletes, the adversity was too much. But, although they had struggles through- out the race and were upset with themselves, they nev- er did step out. That to me means more than setting a PR or finishing in the top 20, because each time they con- quer a challenge, they are only taking one step closer to their peak potential." Pike Central, which host- ed Gibson Southern on Tues- day, Sept. 26, will close out its season by competing in the Pocket Athletic Confer- ence Championship on Sat- urday, Sept. 30, at South- ridge.
