Poplar Street, Petersburg PCHS volleyball team goes 1-3 in Screen Printing Plus Invitational The Pike Central High School vol- leyball team won one out of four best- of-three matches during the Screen Printing Plus Invitational hosted by Vincennes Lincoln High School on Saturday, Aug. 26. During pool play held at the Vin- cennes Clark Middle School gymna- sium, the Lady Chargers dropped two straight-set losses, falling to Mount Vernon (Posey) 25 -9, 25 -11 and to North Knox 25 -21, 25 -8. Then, playing in the bronze brack- et of the single-elimination portion of the 12-team invitational, Pike Central defeated North Daviess 25 -16, 25 -20 in the semifinals before falling to Flora (Ill.) 25 -19, 25 -19 in the final. "We had a tough pool Saturday morning," Lady Chargers head coach Tonya Walton said. "Mount Vernon and North Knox both had some strong hitters. We worked Friday at practice on changing our defense around a bit to help cover on outside hits. It worked very well. I was pleased how it helped all day Saturday and they adjusted to the new defense easily." "They pulled back Saturday eve- ning and played two much better matches against North Daviess and Flora," Walton continued. "We im- proved our communication and pass- ing, which helped the offense tremen- dously. They played very well in these two late games, especially after hav- ing to sit all afternoon and wait." Following is a match-by-match sum- mary: Mount Vernon (Posey) 2, Pike Central 0 Leading 9 -6, Mount Vernon (Posey) outscored Pike Central 16 -3 to win the first set 25 -9. North Knox 2, Pike Central 0 In the first set, Pike Central fell be- hind by 6 -3 before rattling off four straight points – including one on an Senior Kyson Western scored five goals and seniors Breyton Booker and Tyler Meadors netted two each as the Pike Central High School boys' soccer team routed visiting Tell City 13-0 on Wednesday, Aug. 23. Getting assists for Pike Central were Tyler Meadors, Scott, Kyson Western and juniors Austin Holder and Hayden Kabrick. "We played well and shared the ball pretty well," Chargers head coach Chad Western said. "A lot of players got a chance to score and get shots off. We were also able to play all the play- ers that were on the bench in the sec- ond half, and got some good minutes in both halves." For the game, Tell City junior goal- keeper Braeden Beard had a total of 41 saves. Pike Central took a 1-0 lead on Kyson Western's first goal with 37:24 left in the first half. A fter the Chargers extended their lead to 3-0 on goals by Booker and Ty- ler Meadors, Western scored back-to- back goals – the second off an assist by Holder – in a two-minute span to give Pike Central a 5 -0 lead with 20 :23 re- maining in the first half. A goal by Briar Meadors – off an as- sist by Scott – stretched the Chargers' lead to 6 -0 with 19:41 left in the open- ing half before Booker netted his sec- ond goal of the game when he headed the ball – on a corner kick by Kyson Western – into the goal with 16:41 re- maining in the first half to give Pike Central a 7-0 lead. Senior Halley Powers fin- ished second out of 25 run- ners as the Pike Central High School girls' cross country team placed sec- ond in the Southridge Invi- tational – just one point be- hind the host Lady Raiders – on Tuesday, Aug. 22. Powers completed the 3.1-mile race with a time of 22 minutes, 14 seconds. Heritage Hills junior Cait- lin Lueken finished first with a time of 21:21, while Lady Patriots freshman Ka- tie Winkler finished third with a time of 22:54. "Halley had another great race," Lady Chargers' head coach Josh Roach said. "She took off with the front of the pack, and it put her in a great position. For most of the race, she ran on her own. She couldn't keep up with (Lueken), but she put a good gap between her- self and ( Winkler). She left no doubt that she was going to finish second." Pike Central freshman Lauren Young, meanwhile, placed fifth with a time of 23:42, and senior Cailey Furman finished 10th with a time of 25:13. "Lauren ran a strong race and improved her time from Thursday by almost a min- ute," Roach said. "She sat in a pack after the first mile – all trying for fifth place – and she took control of fifth and left the pack behind." "Cailey also ran a great race," Roach added. "She was in 11th with less than half a mile left and she was able to catch and pass 10th place and almost catch ninth." Freshman Charlotte Dudenhoeffer placed 13th with a time of 26:52; fresh- man Jenna Meyer placed 15th with a time of 27:28; and junior Erin Craig placed 16th with a time of 27:39. "Erin ran a minute and a half faster than Thurs- day," Roach said. "Not on- ly did she run a great race, she had a very strong fin- ish. Coming around the last corner, she had one trying to make a pass on her. She told me she heard the oth- er coach telling his runner to make the pass because Erin couldn't hold her off, and that motivated her to By Ed Cahill Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net Senior quarterback Christian Alvey scored three touchdowns while rushing for a game-high 175 yards as the Pike Central High School football team held off visiting Princeton for a 29 -28 victory on Friday, Aug. 25. A fter gaining 54 yards and scoring one touch- down on 12 first-half carries, Alvey added 121 yards and two more touchdowns on 18 second-half rush- ing attempts, including a 43-yard scoring run that – following Alvey's successful two-point conversion run – gave the Chargers a 29 -20 lead with 6:56 left in the game. "That's the plan – to let him kind of take over games with his legs," said first-year Pike Central head coach Erik Mattingly. "He had a fantastic game." According to Alvey, the difference between a 19 -0 season-opening loss at Evansville Bosse one week earlier and the 29 -28 win over Princeton was the offensive line, which led the way as the Char- gers – who were held to 98 yards on 38 carries by the Bulldogs – gained 362 yards on 53 rushing at- tempts against the Tigers. "We worked on our offense a lot," said Alvey, who also completed two of five pass attempts for 36 yards with one interception. "Our blocking in some places was off, but I think tonight we definite- ly blocked in the right places and got some good reads." "At the beginning, I don't think Princeton was ready for how ready our blocking was," Alvey add- ed. "We worked on it all week and they did a heck of a job. They kept pushing, kept pushing, even through cramps and other minor injuries. They just kept playing. I'm proud of them. I wouldn't be able to score if it wasn't for them." Mattingly agreed. "The offensive line played great tonight," Mat- tingly said, referring to senior center Te'Mari- on Fields, senior guards Tyler Vickers and Luke Vinnedge, senior tackle Silas Goff, senior left tight end Zach Pancake, freshman right tackle Josh McHargue and junior right tight end Braxton Rice. "They really started buying into our style of foot- ball tonight," Mattingly continued. "It's not the eas- iest in the world to play, but, I mean, it's a lot of fun. It's a fun way to play."
