B-6 Sports Wednesday, August 30, 2017 The Press-Dispatch PCMS 7th & 8th grade netters open season with losses to Fort Branch The Pike Central Middle School seventh grade vol- leyball team opened its sea- son with a 25 -21, 25 -23, 15 -8 loss to visiting Fort Branch on Thursday, Aug. 24. Ashlyn Shoultz and Del- aney Welch both had four ace serves while Alyna Sharp had a team-high two kills. Welch and Liberty Tay- lor also had two digs apiece. "Overall, I was pleased with how well the girls played," said Lady Char- gers head coach Emily Cher- ry. "We implemented some things with the rotation that are completely new for sev- enth graders. Learning a new rotation can be pretty confusing and it's hard to get the hang of it until you're in a game setting. I think it came together – other than a little confusion here and there, which is completely normal. It will get so much easier as the season pro- gresses." Cherry noted that she, sixth grade coach Stepha- nie Shedd and eighth grade coach Brandi Chestnut had all played for Pike Cen- tral High School volleyball coach Tonya Walton. "We know what her ex- pectations will be when they get to high school," Cherry said. "We're trying to get them ready for that now. As a former high school coach, I understand the benefits of teaching these things young. A successful program is built from the ground up and we're trying to build a good strong base for Pike Central volleyball." In the eighth grade match, Fort Branch defeated the La- dy Chargers in straight sets, 25 -12, 25 -12. Mallory Hunt led Pike Central with three ace serves while Erika Vinnedge added one ace serve. Hallie Bailey registered the Lady Chargers' only kill. Madi- son Riley had one set-assist, and Kya Leighty had a team- high three digs. Pike Central, which host- ed Washington on Tuesday, Aug. 29, will host South Knox at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 5, in the high school gym.
